I have a laptop running Devuan Daedalus MATE. It's been having hardware problems. Often I will see boot messages complaining about a USB port, though I do not know if the port or the motherboard is to blame. Often the system will freeze, but I do not know what the cause is. What logs should I look at for hardware failures? Would I even see a message for a freeze?

when we worked on used equipment, we were always amazed at the poor condition of some units and that they even continued to provide functional operations. a good visual inspection(preferably with magnification and sufficient illumination) may offer some clues. cabling and their plugs should also be inspected(and perhaps switched with other "known-good" components). batteries and power adapters can also create intermittent problems.
sometimes searching for others who are also having similar problems(with your specific hardware or otherwise) may give additional clues to pursue possible corrective actions.
good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Heat makes things quirky. Back in the days when I would salvage my hardware upgrades from other peoples throwaways, I learned that cleaning off cheap factory thermal paste and replacing it with Arctic Silver paste was pretty much guaranteed to shave off degrees of temperature and add degrees of stability back on. Blow out the dust, clean off the cpu, gpu, and north bridge heatsinks using ArctiClean, and reapply thermal compound. Can't hurt. May help.
