[SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

I am trying to install devuan on my pc. When I select my hard drive for partitioning, devaun automatically selects my installation media too and tries to create partitions on it too. It should only create partitions on my selected HDD.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

I would say that technically the story is that the partitioning software shows all avaiable drives of the system, and it's the person installing that decides and selects which drives to partition and how to use them for installation.

However, it's the software is the debian package partman. If you feel strongly about it you should lodge a bug report about the package to bugs.debian.org.

I don't face the same issue on debian. I only select my hard disk for partitioning but devuan automatically selects my usb drive too.

Fair enough. afaik it's the very same software, but obviously there's something different.

Ive noticed this too, is it the red screen saying its going to format the usb drive? I think its just a warning and partman will only make changes you indicate/allow and not just overwrite the usb drive without permission.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

I think it selects as well as make new partitions on my installation media usb. That's why I get an error soon after i proceed with the partitioning. I don't remember the error but it starts with something like partitions(s) dev/sdb ......

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

Would you please correct the typo in your headline? The distro is Devuan, not devaun.

Well, lets start with determining what we are talking about. There are five or six netinstalls around. Which release do you talk about? Where did you get the iso from?
Then: standard installation or expert install?
Guided partitioning or manual partitioning?

I've been through some installs with Daedalus netinstall recently, no problems in expert mode with manual partitioning. I dislike using any automatism, they all have their limitations and disadvantages.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

I am sorry for the typo. I am new to this so don't know how to edit topic. Is there any official guide to do correct manually partitioning? I got the iso from official site. There are mirror links available on site itself.

To correct your own contributions: there is an "Edit" button inside the frame of your entries. In the initial post you can also edit the headline.

What the release is concerned, do you want to use Daedalus, or Excalibur (Testing) or Chimaera or anything older?

I am not aware about some "official" guide for manual partitioning. On the Devuan website there are installation guides with screenshots, but they use guided partitioning there. You might look at Debian, if they have some document. Or search for a video on YT. It does not matter if Devuan or Debian, the procedure is the same, and the chance to find something or Debian is much higher.

Refer to my previous post #9.

I guess you are using Guided Partitioning. Have you got sufficient free space on your sda drive? Is this a dual boot possibly?

It would make sense if you would be a bit more responsive and open with the information you are disclosing here.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

Yes guided partitioning
500 gb hdd and erasing it completely
On single os, no dual boot
It's devuan issue cause i do same steps on debian without single issue.
I tried expert install and it too shows both sda and sdb on the partitioning page and there is no way to deselect sdb (installation usb)

You will always be shown all detected devices, including the installation stick. That does not mean they are all used.

As I said, I don't trust any of the automatisms. You should use manual partitioning, normal or expert mode does not matter. Is that an efi PC or do you want a legacy installation? Encrypted or standard? How much RAM is available?

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

Debian does not shows installation usb while partitioning.
I want to do UEFI not legacy
I don't want encryption
My pc has 4gb ram
Debian installs and works great on my pc but i want Devuan.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

It appears that the documentation page you linked
https://www.devuan.org/os/documentation … all-devuan
skips a couple of dialoges:
1. between its 9 and 10 is a dialogue to select which disk to work with, and
2. between its 10 and 11 is a dialog that presents an overview of all disk layouts.

If the #11 dialog in your case includes sdb, you need to choose the "No" option to go back to the partitioner and undo any partitioning of sdb that you have chosen.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

I think I know where your problem comes from. For Guided Partitioning, do not use the option "Largest free space" but try "Complete disk" (maybe the wording in the installer is slightly different, I did use the German language).
When you select "Complete disk" you are getting asked which device to use for installation.

To avoid later disappointment I vote for manual partitioning.

Cook recipe:
Select your HD (sda) with the cursor and apply a GPT partition table. I think the installer does that automagically on efi installs.
Select the free space and add 1024M as new partition, use as EFI system partition.
Select the remaining free space and add 8192M, use as swap.
Select the remaining free space and add 32738M, use as ext4, mount point /
Select the remaining free space and add the rest, use as ext4, mount point /home

Good luck.

Re: [SOLVED] devuan netinstall iso auto selects installation media for partitioning

Thankyou for help. Manual partitioning did help me to install devuan properly. I think automatic partitioning is messed up for some hardware on devuan. Thank your everyone who helped me through this !
