[SOLVED» Nvidia and kernel 6.1.0.18 - not good!

Tried to update/upgrade just now and there was big problems. Found this thread:

https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=158261

Nvidia driver
nvidia-current/525.147.05 and kernel 6.1.0.18

All sorts of dpkg errors and no install/upgrade.

For now, I'll stay at kernel 6.1.017

(Luckily I do stay at LAST KERNEL DEFAULT SAVE)

A new kernel build is available in the devuan proposed-updates repository.

Proposed-updates are packages that will become part of the next stable point release but are not fully tested yet. It is usually safe to use them....

# /etc/apt/sources.list

deb     http://deb.devuan.org/devuan <release codename>-proposed-updates main
deb-src http://deb.devuan.org/devuan <release codename>-proposed-updates main

Re: [SOLVED» Nvidia and kernel 6.1.0.18 - not good!

For anyone wondering about version numbers.
6.1.0-18 = Linux v6.1.76
6.1.0-17 = Linux v6.1.69

There's no new proposed-update listed in the news section of the Package Tracker for Linux

Message #19 on the linked thread suggests it is the driver that has been patched rather than the kernel - and that is supported by the News section on the Package Tracker for nvidia-graphics-drivers-tesla-470 (though I've no idea if that's the correct/only nvidia package in question).

I had a similar problem with one of those versions, I switched to 6.5 from backports
uname -a

Linux GamesBox 6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.5.10-1~bpo12+1 (2023-11-23) x86_64 GNU/Linux

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

if you don't want to wait...here's a patch

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gento … alid.patch

apply this patch to the files in /usr/src/nvidia-tesla-470-470.223.02/

and install (or re-install) the 6.1.0.18 kernel updates and dkms will work fine.  tested on daedalus.

Re: [SOLVED» Nvidia and kernel 6.1.0.18 - not good!

Driver 525.147.05-6~deb12u1 will fix it, it seems. I have proposed-updates active, so I'll just wait for it to trickle down.

EDIT: Kernel 6.5.0.0 fixed it for now, I guess.

Re: [SOLVED» Nvidia and kernel 6.1.0.18 - not good!

Update:

A whole slew of Nvidia updates arrived today (525.147.05-7~deb12u1) and it built and installed ok for kernel 6.1.0.18.
But when I tried to boot that kernel, instead of 6.5.0.0, it was the completely wrong resolution, like 640x480.
I didn't bother to try to correct it, instead I booted back to 6.5.0.0, were everything worked alright.
