Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

I would be interested in having Ungoogled Chromium since I use firefox-esr with security/privacy extensions and there are a small number of commercial websites that don't play ball. I'm not keen on using the standard chromium deb in the Chimaera repositories, though I did install it on a spare PC for a guest who relies on his saved google setting (bookmarks, etc).

However having gone to https://github.com/ungoogled-software/u … d-chromium I tried to follow the download instructions here:
https://github.com/ungoogled-software/u … ium-debian (since there isn't a devuan repository) and get stuck at the apt update stage:

Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

In the Git README.md the curl line is secure (https) whereas in your apt command it is not (http); is that the reason for the error?

# curl -s 'https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ungoogled_chromium/Debian_Bullseye/Release.key' …

Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

Hi Alex,

no I don't think it's that:
the curl command on the website (that I copied and pasted and executed, sorry should have also listed in my message) uses https://...
For some reason the error message refer to http://..
Changing the curl command to use http://.. results in the same error message when I run sudo apt update.

Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

I'll bring up the topic.
Brave browser installs and works without problems on Chimaera and Daedalus.

Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

Impressions from using Brave.
1. During installation, a repository is added and then installed, uninstalled, and updated like a regular deb package, without unnecessary procedures.
2. Brave Rewards, these same tokens, can be disabled, as well as third-party cookies can be blocked.
3. It works without problems and is quite fast.

Re: Alternative browser for Devuan/Debian - Brave

Iceweasel-uxp, for me, no dbus required!  But you do need patches to build it currently, which I have. But that takes a few hours. wink

As for the alternative, go palemoon or basilisk-browser.

The forum has instructions on how to deal with the discourse problem too and SOME other problematic blockade websites.

All the other websites are bloat, ugly and/or insecure in design.  Why else would google not block them but in fact try to get in the way of uxp with their stupid useragent sniffers?

Answer = google is a pile of a dodo but also they can exploit the newer ones much easier.
