XFCE and X11 (Dock)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for an animated and simple dock.

I just installed apt install plank

but when I try to launch it I get

[AbstractMain:255] Only X11 environments are supported.

I'm running Devuan 4, XFCE 4.16

Is XFCE not compatible with apps for X11 ? or is it plank that have a bug ?

Thanks

Re: XFCE and X11 (Dock)

Latte-dock is part of the KDE project, so it's going to pull in a TON of qt and plasma dependencies.

I'm not running XFCE (I'm using Openbox), but I just installed plank to test it. It put an entry in my menu (which worked and opened the dock), and I also tried running it from the terminal (which also worked and opened the dock). So, I'm not sure why you got that error.

You could just create another xfce4 panel and set it up as a dock; however, you won't get the animations like plank.

Re: XFCE and X11 (Dock)

I just looked that error up online, and it seems that people experiencing this are using Wayland instead of X11...or...they aren't using a display manager.

Re: XFCE and X11 (Dock)

Thank you @MiyoLinux,

$ cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
/usr/bin/slim

So SLIM is not just a login manager but also a display-manager !?

Is was thinking that X11 was a display manager ??? I'm confuse now...

Re: XFCE and X11 (Dock)

I just redid a new devuan VM

and indeed plank work. I guess I had to screw something with my previous vm.

Do you experience the same plank bug ? (see red arrow) ->

if I disable slim ( thx Head_on_a_Stick )

# update-rc.d slim disable

then reboot, then it is no more possible to run plank !!?? I guess the problem lay in plank ?
