[SOLVED] Display / monitor / mouse freeze after hours - Chimaera, not ASCII

Display, mouse and keyboard freeze after different working time with chimaera on a Ryzen 7 / Nvidia GTX 1650 / 2 monitor well-cooled tower computer. Low and not increasing system resources' consumption and temperature before freeze. Programs as video recording and sound of video from tv card are still working. No response to any keystrokes (including runlevels) except Magic SysRQ.

None of it with ascii on the same computer, but the same after upgrade from that ascii.

Inactivation of suspend, screen saver and dpms were NO solution.

I found similar freeze reports caused by FullCompositionPipeline activation in the nvidia settings. But without this setting there's an annoying tearing of videos.

Tonight I'll try without FullCompositionPipeline.

I know, there's a lot of information missing, but hope, someone has had the problem too and solved it.

Your Ryzen 7 isn't a first gen 1700-1800x ? There is a segmentation fault on this generation of processor if manufactured begin 2017 under linux.

Ctrl+alt+f1 work for open console ?
Have you try to reach your computer with SSH from another one ? Ping reply ?
I have some issues like that and often Xorg stay stuck at 100% not know if it's an hardware issue or software totally random and sometime all work fine but mouse can't interact anymore with windows (the cursor click seem stuck to only one window) but keyboard work on all windows. I restart slim and solve often all my issue. I use slim with mate.

No, it's a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work.

No SSH trial yet.

Also slim/mate.

What 100% do you mean?

100% CPU busy.

Do Caps/Num/Scroll lock turn the relevant LEDs on and off on the keyboard?

Try logging on via ssh from another system and running top. When you get the next hang it should show you what was using the CPU.

Re: [SOLVED] Display / monitor / mouse freeze after hours - Chimaera, not ASCII

At freezing time my CPU usage is low, same as memory (usually it happens while recording something overnight). Recording is continued, even new recordings are started after freeze. So I could run a logging program on the system itself and read it from another installation on the same computer.

Caps/Num/Scroll Lock keys are not working. I wonder why Magic SysRQ keys do.

Once the mouse pointer was still working on one of the monitors, but with no response to mouse keystrokes.

It seems to be an xorg crash cutting off all I/O devices.

Try to replace slim (no more developed) with lightdm. I am running that on a 3700X.

I'll give it a try. But it would not explain why the freeze doesn't happen in ASCII but in it's upgrade to Beowulf - Chimaera.

Update: After changing to lightdm no freeze overnight. I'll look at it some more days, then set it (hopefully) to solved.

Yes it would—the newer login session protocols are no longer supported by SLiM, which has been dead upstream since 2013...

EDIT: report this to Devuan as a bug, they need to drop SLiM.

Bad news: The system froze again tonight around 4:22 h. So it was not SLIM.

The /var/log/messages says

The last 2 messages are from shutdown by Magic SysRQ.

/var/log/daemon.log, auth.log, Xorg.0.log: no events around 4:22h.

GPU temperature was 39°C at freeze.

So, that's all information I could get.

Any ideas?

If in doubt blame the blob. Does the system freeze with nouveau?

Nouveau is the next trial on my list. At present I'm testing xfce desktop environment (don't ask me why, there's no logical reason for it).

Is there a way to display all system or Xorg actions? Just to remind that: the sound ist still working, programs continue, cronjobs are started ... only the display shows the content of freeze time and mouse / keyboard input to the session does not work, but to sysrq does.

Look at my post from 2021-11-02 07:25:11. Those were all logs with entries around freezing time.

With XFCE no freeze occured within 31 hours. I'll keep on observing but set it for now to [SOLVED]. I hope I won't have to change that.

Tried nouveau. Horrible tearing.

Got rid of all nvidia & nouveau stuff by purge.

Manually installed nvidia 470 driver from nvidia.de download. No remarkable tearing even without composite option.

No freeze overnight.

Now I'll observe it some more days before setting to solved.
