chimaera running with i3wm

Hello all.

FWIW, I just finisihed a basic build of i3wm on chimaera (bare metal).  Aside from some niggling issues (listed below) everything seems smooth and looks like I like it.  I'll post information on my install(s) soon (I think I'll wait until I get dwm operation in the same chimaera user space).

The bottom line is that I like how things work. The system seems quite snappy and is not over heavy in the RAM department.

Niggling Issues:
-- gotta say I hate that sudoers requires a non-standard intervention to get working like it does in the world of arch, *buntu, and MX/antiX.
-- virtualbox setup was as difficult as those I used to encounter some 8-10 years ago. I got it working but the experience isn't great for most regular users.
-- I need to install pm-utils in order to get my suspend script to work without systemd.  Again, just a nuisance.
-- I must have missed that fact that there was no LiveUSB utility.  I downloaded and installed a Mintstick deb file.

Hi Mark, did you see distrotube's video today on dwm-flexipatch? Maybe you knew about it already, but it's new to me. Looks like a great way to try out various DWM patches quickly: https://github.com/bakkeby/dwm-flexipatch

The dev also has flexipatches on his github page for dmenu, st, and slock.

I'm going to mess around with it briefly tonight on my Beowulf install.

By the way, your i3 Chimaera looks really nice. Is that wallpaper something you could share?

Hi @andyprough.  Here's a link to my current wallpapers (active-folder).  The images are all from either unsplash or pixabay (mostly unsplash).

My dwm build is pretty minimal I think I only use 3 patches.  I do the same with i3wm (no gaps and fancy stuff).  I like to see what I can do without all the huha (Marine-speak).  wink

I, also, am not a fan of watching youtube tutorial. I'm a tactile learner, not visual.  I need things in writing so I can cut & paste, take my own sweet-time understanding, etc.  It's just a personal preference thing..

btw. I have dwm running on the gear mentioned in the OP.  I'll be doing a write-up on the whole adventure in the near future.

That is a huge undertaking, very talented coder. Good use of C Preprocessor directives https://www.cprogramming.com/reference/preprocessor/

Wow, this is great! Thanks Mark! Looks like we have similar tastes, I had grabbed a couple of these from unsplash myself recently.

Worked out well for me, no patching errors at all, which are pretty common with DWM patches in my experience.
