Lost wifi icon.

HI,

I am relatively new to linux, but am enjoying devuan.

Recently , I turned on my laptop to discover my top right wifi icon has disappeared?

I am still connected to wifi, but have no indication anymore of networks or connections via the wifi icon.

Anyone enlighten me :-)

You should try to frame your questions a bit better otherwise its all just guess work.

1. how did you install devuan?
2. what wifi manager you are using ? (example, wicd)
3. what desktop environment or window manager you are using ? (example, xfce4)

HI,

Thanks for the replies, and the welcome.

I come from a predominantly Windows/Mac background, but wanted to escape about a year ago.

The accessibilty of Linux OS has improved tremendously recently, So I tried a few others ( Mint, Manjarao) until I setled on Duvean.

I dont know enough to choose ''custom install'', so I would have chosen defaults - so I am guessing Xcfe?

Because of the large application store, there is little I am lost for, and although I am pretty rubbish at at terminal, I can get by if required :-)

TBH, I can't quite remember the exact details of install, but it was using an image from the duvean site, and via USB drive - sorry.

I update the build every week, and have had very little problems

Losing this wifi icon is strange- also If I open an app that usually shows in the top bar, it wont show up as usual - I use ''flameshot'' screenshot, but now when I choose it from the applications menu, it will not show in the top bar, so I cannot access the details.

The only items still showing in the top bar are, name, speaker, power, and time.

is there a terminal command/s that will provide the info you are looking for?

Hi pootler, sounds as though you have the default installation of devuan which i think is xfce4 and should have wicd as the network manager. I cant really help here as i dont use either, i prefer non gtk programs to run the wifi adapter like wpa_supplicant.
Hopefully someone will chime in here for you and get that icon back.

Before i go though, bring up a terminal and type the following and post the output.

wicd-client --tray

no need to use sudo.

try this if indeed you have that file in the home directory.

cat ~/.xsession-errors > x-errors.txt

Now you should have a file called x-errors.txt in the home directory, open the file with your editor (should be mousepad) and copy and past the contents in your post.

output of your command gives me an 18mb text file.

It wont open in mousepad ( ''wrong conversion''? )

it wont open in featherpad ( permission error )

it will open in VIM, BUT this is nearly a thousand pages of text!, not the sort of thing a forum would appreciate!

Yeah not sure what to make of that .xsession-errors file, lot going on there. Wicd doesnt stand out in it though.

maybe have a look in session and startup and add to application autostart if its not there, log out and log back in again.

also do you have other systemtray icons showing, like volume etc..?

You have several foreign (non-Devuan) repositories active in your system so I would be blaming whichever software you installed from those. That Signal source looks particularly egregious because Xenial (Ubuntu) is not compatible with Devuan.

Try removing any and all non-Devuan software and see if that fixes things.

Note that Devuan has a beowulf-backports repository so you should use that rather than buster-backports (although the packages should be the same apart from the systemd backport).

as head on a stick mentions getting rid of some of the foreign software might help.

a few suggestions in place of smplayer and etcher you could use the smplayer that is already in the stable repos and use gnome-multi-writer in place of etcher.

sudo apt install gnome-multi-writer

sudo apt install smplayer

not sure what you could use in place of teamviewer or signal, they seem to be personal choice or maybe needed for work.

Not really that much of a frankenstein, just needed to delete those foreign repositories. Replace the buster backports entries with devuans backports and update, upgrade should have fixed it.

Pootler if you want devuan backports just add them like this from the terminal.

then

sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

I just now looked at the repositories he had listed, and yeah no wonder(opensuse, brave, debian, etc) with all that and any xfce session/session manager updates going on.. lest frankenstein more like a twitchy, dissappearing boxes, desktop panel reloading on every boot. sources.list and understanding what revolves around it is important, I always keep as basic and simple as possible. I use xcfe properly on all my normal end use desktops.
