HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10

Hello everyone,
my administration bought an HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10.

https://buy.hpe.com/ie/en/servers/rack- … 1010026837

The sellers added to the hardware 4 years CentOS support and, you know, with CentOS I’ll have systemd of course!

Has someone experience on this server with Devuan (updating firmware, proprietary drivers, veeam...)?

I would not like to be in trouble with Poettering's stuff...

Everything CentOS can, Devuan can do too. Devuan even has the rpm package, allowing you to use rpm packages on apt systems.

If in doubt, see if you can swap out the CentOS system disk with an empty one and install Devuan on that.

Probably better to use alien to convert the .rpm package to a .deb and install that instead.

And yes, if the hardware supports CentOS then it will almost certainly work under Devuan.

Fair point. Fortunately I don't need it wink

Re: HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10

It's worth a try, but I made the experience that some hardware which is "certified" for RHEL/CentOS needs some proprietary driver package provided by the vendor. And these are usually only available in RPM format and may be RHEL-specific, so I wouldn't bet all will work fine with Devuan before trying.

However, you are often better off without these proprietary drivers anyways. Not sure about this higher-end server you got.

Another issue might be that you are probably paying a lot to HPe for support, but running an "unsupported" configuration might lead to support not being available. Yet, especially for HPe servers support is necessary, as they are usually not making firmware updates available without a valid subscription which is why I avoid buying hardware from this vendor.
