How can I install 'runit'?

The only options during install (Expert) is sysvnit and openrc.

You would need to install it once you have a bootable system with sysvinit or openrc thus replacing the init.

it did not work for me, server error, purged runit and re-installed sysvinit, rebooted and got sysvinit back.

Really? Can you post the X.Org log file?

I did test my method in a VM and the Xfce desktop seems to work just fine:
