machine freezes - nouveau driver?

Hello good people,

Devuan Beowulf.

When I play some videos the box freezes but surely as soon as I run compton.  I know from old experience, this could mean video driver issue or RAM.  I checked RAM no issue there.  The box runs nouveau even thought the video card is Nvidia.  I don't want to bother installing the Nvidia driver. 

Is there a possibility that an oxrg.conf file could fix the freezing issue?

Not going to say there isn't an alternative but I had the same issue on a Lenovo laptop with a quadro GPU. I just gave in and installed the 418.88 driver from Nvidia and haven't had an issue since.

Have you installed the non-free firmware that is required by the nouveau driver?

Can you please share the name of the package?  I don't know of a nouveau non-free firmware.  I just searched but nothing good came up.

Yes, previously installed.

I installed the nvidia driver.  So far so good.
