Runlevel 3 or "manual mode" fails to start X11

Spent the best part of today saving data onto external hard disks, re-installing devuan daedalus (5) and restoring data. All for nothing.

After an update yesterday X11 keels over instantly when I use any option other than 0 in update-alternatives --config x-window-manager.

  Selection Path Priority Status
------------------------------------------------------------
* 0            /usr/bin/xfwm4          60        auto mode
  1 /usr/bin/startfluxbox 50 manual mode
  2 /usr/bin/xfwm4 60 manual mode

Same after the complete re-installation of the system (option 1, fluxbox, being my preferred one).

Error message when X11 bails out:

[libseat/backend/setd.:64] Could not connect so socket /run/seatd.sock: No such file of directory
[libseat/seatd.76:] Backend 'seatd' failed to open seat, skipping
Server terminated successfully (0). Closing logfile file.8ind.c:184] Could not stat fd 21878

The only reference to seat in Xorg.0.log I see is:

[ 33.048] (II) seat-libseat: libseat integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling libseat integration

Does anyone know what's happening here (or better still, how to fix this)?

Re: Runlevel 3 or "manual mode" fails to start X11

Hi, I found a similar error starting X when first-boot of a clean install...

I checked is seatd was installed and it was not.

I'm running KDE/Plasma, not better but ...

Your error is different... the error I had was something like, seatd could not be found.

Perhaps removing and installing seatd may drag in any other dependants. FWIW, i havent seen keeptty. but that may be because I rarely use light-weight WM/DM's since I stopped using openbox, with kde apps.

Also check to see if there is a newer iso, I have Daedalus 5.1. The installer program may have changed when bugs were found (not that I heard about any).

The short story is "yes, install seatd; log out and log in". That will make you run Xorg while avoiding the buggy code path of logind.

The long story is longer but who cares?
