Global .asoundrc.

In the next thread, a colleague complained about

.asoundrc overrides the automagic. No sound for other users incl root unless I add the rc file to their accounts.

This is easy to fix. You need to move the contents of ~/.asoundrc to /etc/asound.conf.
Delete the ~/.asoundrc file itself.

This is what mine looks like

 root@aa:~# cat /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.ctl.card 0

pcm.!default {
  type hw
  card 0
             }

ctl.!default {
   type hw
  card 0
             }
root@aa:~#
 

Both root and user have sound.
