mate: apps banging out on panel

When I start up and log in to my MATE desktop (on up-to-date ASCII) some apps that I have added to a panel sometimes bang out. For example on one PC the wastebasket sometimes refuses to appear there, while on another netspeed always crashes and has to be manually reloaded.

Is there any kind of simple fix?
