Re: Music

I'm a big fan of old early 70's prog rock, and one of my favorite prog rock bands is Yes. Over the past few years, a pretty good small-time cover band called Awaken has been putting up live, note-for-note renditions of some pretty difficult Yes songs. Here's a good example of "South Side of the Sky", the last song on side 1 of Yes's epic 1971 album "Fragile": https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=ndAd7eCTGpI

I really appreciate the intricate guitar work, and this Yes cover band takes advantage of the fact that they have two singers who can emulate Jon Anderson's vocals passably well. That's unique, most Yes cover bands either have just one Jon Anderson sound-alike, or just give up altogether and have his vocals sung by a female or by a male singer whose vocals are way off.

Re: Music

World Record by Neil Young.

Spotify's loss is Qobuz' gain — this is streaming at ~54MB/s and it sounds incredible (24 bit, 192KHz).

Stormzy's new album This is What I Mean. Taken a turn into Soul for this release. Very nice.

Re: Music

Electronic Generations by Carl Cox.

This is *awesome* through a decent pair of headphones.

Playing this in Qobuz' Web thingy under Firefox via a USB DAC with this ~/.asoundrc:

pcm.Digital {
   type hw
   card v1
}

ctl.!default {
   type hw
   card v1
}

pcm.!default {
   type plug
   slave {
      pcm "Digital"
      rate "unchanged"
   }
}

^ That forces ALSA to pass the PCM stream directly to the DAC (identified as v1 in /proc/asound/cards) without it's usual 48kHz resampling.

We don't need no stinkin' sound servers cool

Re: Music

@Head_on_a_Stick

I'm sorry to bother you, if you have the desire and opportunity...
This is a 2-bit (out of 16 standard) recording of a piece of music.
Can you hear it through your headphones and USB sound card?
Can you name the artist?

http://ant-audio.co.uk/test/2bit_fragment.zip

PS. There is nothing more than an interest in the capabilities of modern devices.

Too short thought. It should be 4 minutes & 33 seconds...

Re: Music

Saw John Cage in 1967 or 68. He had a covered cake pan full of cecropia moths which he uncovered on stage and attempted to toss the moths into the air. Unfortunately the moths had become lethargic and simply fell to the stage floor with quiet plops. He chuckled a little, probably at the audience reaction, and then went back to the piano randomly plunking the keyboard.

Re: Music

Double Album by NOFX. Surprisingly good sound quality for a punk (well, New Wave) record.

Re: Music

Boss Drum by The Shamen.

I remember when this album first came out, I hated it 'cos I was all about Death Metal at the time. I've mellowed with old age and can now recognise it as a stone cold classic though. E's are good!
