That's correct, it's in Trixie/Excalibur. One of the major disappointments with the upgrade...

From what I use foliate, font-manager and nicotine fell victim as well, but the first two have proper theme support, while nicotine can (thankfully!) be told to use GTK3 via environment variable.

It can do more even you can edit the video, combine videos together things like that.

Yes, it's a very nice linear video editor, something akin to VirtualDub. You can also losslessly cut videos by keyframes, or splice them together if they share the same FPS, bitrate and dimensions. The filter set is quite respectable as well.

I considered adding the deb-multimedia repository and installing it that way, but it requires very careful management and resolution of possible conflicts, so I'm using the appimage format for now. Although it's good that they provide several options for installation.

I haven't noticed much difference in speed compared to Handbrake, but yeah - both programs have their pros and cons. The usage of GTK4 by HB is certainly unfortunate, and the program doesn't play nice with some themes due to their choice to forgo the Libadwaita stylesheet support.

#5 Re: Off-topic » XFCE is building a new WM and compositor for Wayland » 2026-02-06 10:36:51

To me, XFCE still has a few saving graces - it can look good and be unobtrusive, but I realize it's pretty much a sinking ship by now.
Will probably switch to IceWM or LXQt at some point given the circumstances.

no choice but to use like the Handbrake

I found that Avidemux can do most of the things that Handbrake can, with a better interface too.
One thing that's missing from it is setting up MP4 chapters. But encoding works great from my experience.

The AppImage uses Qt6 toolkit with the embedded Fusion theme.

#8 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] how start ntp? » 2026-01-28 20:49:38

The clock will be synchronized automatically as soon as you install an NTP client, and Xfce Clock applet will display the correct time.
There's simply no GUI to enable NTP under Xfce, but it's not really even necessary, as people here pointed out.

#10 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] how start ntp? » 2026-01-28 10:19:57

So, MATE looks more solid than XFCE for this point?

I think so. Last time I tried MATE, it looked more comprehensive and feature-complete compared to Xfce, which is more akin to WMs in terms of requiring external modularity, although in terms of resource usage it's a DE alright.

I would personally much rather stick with MATE, but for some reason as soon as I tried to adjust monitor brightness settings in there, my screen went black. Not quite sure what happened, maybe some kind of hardware quirk. But still, if you're looking for completeness, MATE is the way to go. It does provide its own Time & Date tool as I remember.

#11 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] how start ntp? » 2026-01-27 13:29:43

no its native xfce clock applet(or its gnome app?)

Not really. The Clock applet dialog is indeed part of Xfce, but that Time and Date Settings window definitely comes from gnome-system-tools - which Xfce (for some odd reason) still relies on for system time configuration. Without it being present (as is probably the case with the default Xfce installation), the Xfce Clock applet settings will not even show the 'Time and Date Settings' button.

#12 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] how start ntp? » 2026-01-26 15:18:36

That dialog looks like part of the old gnome-system-tools package, which provides a GUI Time & Date utility, along with one for users and groups management.

Perhaps it lacks compatibility with the current NTP clients.

#15 Re: Freedom Hacks » WineHQ released Wine 11 - runs without i386 architecture » 2026-01-17 20:44:00

Sounds promising, no more having to go multiarch for the sake of Wine and generating separate 32/64 prefixes. I hope WoW64 support really is on par with the old 32-bit Wine. Looks like .NET and DirectMusic are also available out of the box now, which is great if that's the case. It's about time for these things to be included by default.

#16 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Thunar flooding .xsession-errors after Excalibur upgrade » 2026-01-11 15:21:38

As mentioned before, installing LightDM is also an option - it writes a new .xsession-errors every session while keeping a single backup that is also rotated at every login. It works pretty well unless you have a server or keep long uptimes for some other reason.

Bleachbit also cleans up this file, but it's a risky tool to use - all too easy to damage your system (by purging locales, for instance).

#17 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] requesting recomendations for a small window manager » 2026-01-09 10:36:12

I see... Ironically, the original NeXTSTEP was typically used with display resolutions that were considered crazy at the time. 1120x832 in 1988!

I'm pretty sure WM will catch up to high DPI at some point, given its heritage and still active maintenance.

#18 Re: Off-topic » GTK2 Removed from Arch's Repositories » 2026-01-09 10:20:54

The cursed Gnome won't be satisfied until the eventual release of GTK666, usable only by those who made the infernal pact to sell their souls to the coveted gnomish Dark Messiah of Adwaita (aka The Only One)... And to think people were laughing at Ubuntu Satanic Edition!

#21 Re: Off-topic » Happy New Year to all you Devuaners » 2025-12-31 17:16:58

Happy New Year Dev1! May the software you use never segfault and all sources compile without trouble.
And may you never see the sight of the kernel panic outside of a bad dream!

Musk is a controlled opposition shill... Showed up in a fancy schmancy Novus Ordo Seclorum jacket yet people still think he's some kind of savior. He's a fake through and through.

Ah, Soylent Green... That's exactly what I thought about when I saw this thread. A must see for anyone who is excited about being fed 'maybe food'.
There's talk that they are already using our fellow humans as a 'secret ingredient' in hamburgers... Who knows, would not surprise me at all.

No love for the old Window Maker? Very lightweight although certainly not everyone's cup of tea. It even has its own distro (Debian-based).

AI is BS:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro130m-f_yk

Artificial Imitation of human thought... nothing but hype and scam to make humans feel somehow redundant.

What's the novelty factor of AI? I just fail to see anything special about it. Programming, simulation and automation done in a particularly irresponsible and dumb manner, perhaps? Compare it with the invention of computers, radio or aeroplane... It's obvious there's no great breakthrough of any kind associated with the 'AI'. It's only yet another shoddy marketing and general deception tool in the hands of the small minds who think themselves to be the 'enlightened' ones. No reason to worship it, neither out of fear nor admiration.
