Hi
Firefox does not require pulseaudio on beowulf. In fact pulseaudio is not needed at all. I am using the system to producing music. Pulseaudio is software only and making the sound worse not better. if you want graphical volumecontrl install volumeicon-alsa and be happy.
If gimp is cant open older files it is a bug (possibly in debian based distros). Report it here in devuan and maybe also to debian.
And yes there are some parts you have to install yourself. But it seems you are having the knowledge to get around it. And when first set up no changes the next two years ;-))
Have a nice day
Hi
Gparted is not installed by default. Can be done by "apt install gparted". Google earth works in my firefox browser. I do not have a scanner anymore but try to look here https://askubuntu.com/questions/1038557 … ct-scanner.
Su has changed from just "su" to "su -" to get full access. This is covered in the release notes as well as a lot of other commonthing
To setup your network we need to know a liltel about your setup. But be patient. And google might be your friend

Hi
It means that the signed one will boot with secure boot enabled (and also without). The other only without secure boot disabled. But to my knowledge (in this case limited) there is no reason not to use the signed kernel anyway.

Hi
Sorry to hear things messed up. You can off course also chroot into the system to see what is happening. But sometimes the a reinstall of the whole thing is the fastest and simplest solution. And in the process I am sure you will know much more.
Hopefully you will get things up and running. But I have seen that bumblebee often causes trouble. And with a new machine it is even more so.
Best wishes

Hi
Or install volumeicon-alsa and add it to the desktop

P.S. Could we not have this more clear in release notes or in a header in a Sticky. This question is there again and agian and again. So i am repeating this over and over and over ;-)))
Hi
Now I do not have a similar configuration to test. But according to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee you will have to disable nvidia-persistenced.service so the nvidia card can be turned off and on when needed (the whole idea behind bumblebee). If it works then you were indeed right yourself about what was the problem ;-))

Hi
This is because pulseaudio is not running by default. You can get volumecontrol by installing something like qasmixer, a qt mixer for alsa or for gtk volumeicon-alsa. Another possibility is to get pulseaudio up and running as described in the release notes.

Hej
Du får det på dansk. Du skal ikke kun skrive su men "su -" ellers har du kun adgang til bruger rettigeheder ikke login som root.
Hello
Written in danish. To get full root access you need to write not just "su" but "su -"
Have a nice day
Lars H
Hi
Hopefully you can log in as root ;-)). If not try "sudo passwd root" to get access.
The behavior of su to root has changed in bewulf (se the releasse notes!!). To get full path you need "su -" or "su root". It is supposed to be more secure.

Hi
I would suggest you to try with the debian installer (netinstall Iso). The reason is I know it works with encryption on multiple disks, as well as a auto lvm+encryption on one disk. I am using encryption myself without any problems on multiple disks. It might be a bug or problem with the refracta installer. I haven't tried it because I can do anything I want (and a lot more) with the netinstall which I know from around 100 installs of debian, and is among the most flexible out there.

Hi
The default kernel for devuan is 4.19. It is to old for your graphics card. I would suggest you to install the newest kernel for the system (linux 5.4) from devuan backports. It might not support your video card. But it will also have better drivers for other things on such a new machine. i would also suggest installing the newest nvidia drivers also from backports.
To enable backports add "deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged beowulf-backports main contrib non-free" to your /etc/apt/sources.list.
If you encounter any problems you are welcome here again
Enjoy your new machine

Oh then i could see that you might nead bumblebee. Read here (and it is about buster) https://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee
Hi
Devuan is based on Debian. The goal of Devuan is to be free of systemd in order to let people decide which init system to use. That is why libsystemd0 is an empty package. The other goal is to keep things simple (it means not to maintain to many packages). It is in the mind of the developers of apt (which of course is from debian and ubuntu) that the decisions of what apt should depend upon is taking place. I am sure you can find more information on debians apt-devel mailing list. It will be a lot of work with no practical benefit to remove the empty systemd0 package. If it easy to do without removing a lot of packages I am sure it was already done.
I hope this answer was helpfull

Hi
I will just mention that if you don't need LVM don't use it. I know that lvm on top of luks are the quite normal. But if you just want encryption then everything works just fine with plain luks encryption. But if you really need LVM and luks use the patch above. To help others that happens to get this problem please respnd to them and share the link to the patch with them.

Hi
libsystemd0 is the one part of systemd it is allmost impossible to avoid being based on debian. But it does not matter. You are still not using systemd for anything practical. But removing this little library would be a huge task with no practical benefit (except avoiding using it).

Hi
There seems to be no full images of the entire devuan archive. And I don't think there will ever be. So you must use one of the other solutions and make for instance a sdcard or hdd with the packages you need besides the iso. Or make your own local copy of the entire archive.
Almost no one will have the need for everything offline these days. If I had to do some enterprise work with a good default configuration I would make a default good setup and copy it over to the other installs.

Hi
As a newcomer to Devuan (one month) I will say thank you for this wonderful and well made distribution, with a lot of friendly people and nice community. I am sure I will stay here for quite a while.

Hi
This is because the kernel is signed with the debians secureboot key. If you are using secure boot do NOTHING. If you are NOT using secure boot I am sure it is safe to do the following. Edit /etc/default/grub and change the name to whatever you prefer update your initrd. (in a terminal run as root update-initramfs -u) and on next boot it will have that name even if it is Donald Duck.

Hi
Does alsamixer in a terminal work
To get pulseaudio to work you need according to the Release Notes do the following:
Pulseaudio
- If you have no sound, make sure the following line in
/etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf is commented as
shown here:
#autospawn=no

Hi PedroReina
That would have been my next suggestion, when confirmed sound is working. One step at a time ;-))
Have a nice day
Thank you
I was as well unaware of this step. Now my problems with updating apt sources is gone as well (for installing I am using aptitude, for upgrading apt)
Have a nice day
Lars H
No. deleting pulseaudio is not required. But volumicon needs to be started from a terminal with "volumeicon".
You can also adjust levels using alsamixer (also in a terminal). Hopefully you will be able to adjust the volume

To ADMIN: Could we please have sound problems in a sticker. It is the same over and over ;-))
Hi fsmithred
In gentoo you can build firefox wwith support for jackd. So you should be able to do it by compiling it yourself.

Hi
What does alsamixer in a terminal show. Is your device listed in a terminal with "amixer". If it works consider instaling "volumeicon-alsa".
