Would someone please explain how to install the .ISO, so that I can restore Devuan to my hard drive?

Fortunately and for the time being Devuan is doing quite alright with what the devs and maintainers have on their respective plates, kudos to them. I say for the time being because in the present situation, nothing is a given.

Keeping Devuan Linux working in spite of the systemd onslaught on the Linux ecosystem takes a lot of work.

Yes . . . your assumption is correct . . . but we are a small team of individuals so the "bus factor" hangs over our heads. There is always "thrashing" in the community but very little interest in actually participating in the process. This model is not sustainable long term. There is currently a discussion on the DNG mail list and skarnet is in the mix. It is a moderated list. Sign up and your first post will appear when I release it.

On this forum a thread in the Devuan topic would probably suffice,

As to whether there are enough init-knowledgeable users here . . . that remains to be seen. I predict a lot of thrashing . . .  big_smile

I can't tell, which line was added. Do you mean
this commit?

Yes, that line. `root@debian:~# apt-get install eudev sysvinit-core`. sysvinit-core was added to that line but never made it into the instructions on the website.

I can't find your version anywhere in git. Was there a pull request?

The funky version  - bullseye-to-chimaera.md - is listed on this page which is not even edited properly for chimaera!

This looks bad indeed. I think you should suspend this feature asap until it's fixed and tested well.

The website repo is HERE. I always worked directly on www but the new web person is doing it a different way (which I never understood).  Seems it might need a rethink if important stuff like this is falling through the cracks . . .

Thanks for the offer, auanta. I am waiting for the Webmaster to sort it and upload the corrected instructions to devuan.org. I'll let you know when that's sorted.

#1084 Re: Installation » Bullseye migration story » 2022-08-03 17:24:34

@tomasz . . . I think I found the problem!

The instructions should begin with this:

# Migrate from Debian Bullseye to Chimaera

It's necessary to [configure your network](network-configuration.md) before you begin, otherwise you will lose network access during the migration.

For migration from Debian Bullseye to Chimaera you need to install sysvinit-core before continuing.

root@debian:~# apt-get install sysvinit-core

. . .

I see now that this change was made to an incompletely updated file - that line was added but the other release references on the page were not updated and the page never transitioned to the Devuan website. Totally a screwup on our end to have missed that.

Would it be possible for you to test a migration adding that instruction?

@tomasz . . .

1. Please open an account at https://git.devuan.org/
2. Clone the document you will need to edit
3. Commit you changes for review

I have asked the webmaster to identify the exact document from which you should be working as I was unable to discern the workflow from /documentation to /www.

Stay tuned . . .  smile

Welcome to the forum and thanks for taking the time to share your migration experience. I am only going to comment on the use of http vs https.

Please have a look at this page for basic information about Devuan's round-robin of repositories. If you want to use https, chose a specific mirror from the mirror list for your sources.list configuration. There is additional information about how the mirrors are set up here.

Any improvements to the current migration documentation would be appreciated.

Nice transparent theme.

@HoaS et all . . . Scratching an itch is an option but wouldn't it be better to eliminate the source of the aggravating itch? All beings are infinite combinations of mental and material properties. The attributes that we assign to incoming data are not reality. It is a mental construct, a prison, that keeps us bound to endless suffering.

It is happening outside. Don't you realize it, with all the atrocities going on in the last several years and decades? The international bankers have never profited this much off a crisis (that they created themselves). Slowly, but surely, more people are waking up to this shit. Just like the problem of Systemd, and Devuan was created in response to it. If you see corruption, won't you speak up about it?

I have spoken up for a lot in my 80 years and am very good at it. Had Alcoa tied in knots for years.  Stopped an airport and a sludge dump and was in part responsible for the resignation of some local politicians. There was a shareholder resolution against WF after Y2K to do non-GMO labeling and sourcing. Oh . . . and Devuan and Free Software, of course.  smile

It was exhausting and in the grand scale of things wasn't even a drop in the ocean. Ultimately the solution is NOT out there. Happiness and "freedom" and ultimately "liberation" lies in understanding our internal responses and judgments to whatever is "out there" and seeing those phenomena as empty and unworthy of attention.  Think Gandhi . . . as long as there is an "us" and "them" there is no peace. Only bondage.

brocashelm wrote:

Exactly. I don't do any Western medicine or doctors. Period. Big money really has the masses on a treadmill. Most food available commercially makes the population sick then they go to the "experts" which makes them sicker. It is a closed circle scam to extract money from us and keep us fearful and obedient. They can kiss my skinny azz.

Good grief . . . The problem isn't "out there". It's in YOUR head!  OUR heads. The perceived external differences are irrelevant.  The labels are irrelevant. The identifications are irrelevant. We all are living in a mental fabrication. It is about choice..

In every moment WE CHOOSE greed and/or hatred and/or delusion or generosity and/or love and/or clarity and will bear the consequences of those choices. There is no escape from cause and effect and we each are creating our own future with each intentional action so choose wisely.

It has been uncompressed for years and working perfectly on an older Devuan. I just copied the configs to chimaera where the theme no longer works. I re-tarred it to post here in case anyone wanted to have a look at it since it's not available elsewhere. wink

My beloved transparent gkrellm skin is failing on chimaera with this error:

The program 'gkrellm' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)'.
      (Details: serial 5672 error_code 4 request_code 56 minor_code 0)
      (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
       that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
       To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
       option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
       backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

It does run with the one and only "default" skin which is incredibly fugly.

Here's a tar.gz of the skin that I tweaked many years ago.

My now officially 80 year old brain is way beyond being able to sort this. I'm hoping the collective brain power on this forum might be able to pinpoint the problem. My eyes would be eternally grateful and others may enjoy it too!  smile

Doing that works for you but will slow down the syncing of our mirrors and cause more timeouts for everyone else.  sad There are also some changes that are in the process of being sorted.
