If you take a look into the sources.list you will see that on security updates is non-free by default and you can add contrib non-free and activate them or deactivate before any install just install the netinst with the base and then log in as root and nano /etc/apt/ sources.list and delete the non-free and apt-get update and install only free software or add contrib non-free and install whatever you whant pretty simple the repos are almost the same with debian ones just the systemd is banned
First i use mostly 32 bit operating system just because i have 5 laptops 3 64 bit the rest 32 and i prefer same OS on all with the same things installed

pretty smooth boots everytime in less than 90 mb of ram even if i have 8gb i am still addicted to this configuration but all the time i have to install the firmware-amd-graphics because of my graphics card .

Have you tried to reinstall the intel graphics driver and wicd try ifconfig and at wicd guy go advanced and check if the right wifi card is used wlan0 or maybe your has another name now that was my problem on my experiments and fixed them so i hope this can help you too
