One (hopefully) last thing:
On my 64 bit installation, both Compton and Conky autostart. On the 32 bit system (the one that you've been helping me with) they don't, and I need to select them from the MiyoLinux Accessories menu when I boot up.

#27 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-08-01 06:47:30

That most definitely helps. I wish I'd known about that compton.conf setting earlier.
So, I now have MIYO running on a RAID 0 array!

#28 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] New Releases Uploaded » 2018-07-31 14:12:36

Done smile

It took me a bit more that 10 minutes... maybe about 1/2 hour.

I had to run

sudo chmod +x miyo*

in /usr/bin to get the various miyo apps (ie: compton and conkly) to work, as well as the exit commands.

I am getting a bit of screen tearing, but so far only in the SpaceFM file manager. It's really bad! It takes quite a while to "paint" the screen. I say "so far" because I haven't fully tested the system yet. But SpaceFM is pretty much unusable.

I do have a really old system:

mike@liberator:~$ inxi -G
Graphics:
Card-1: AMD Rage 3 [Rage XL PCI] driver: N/A
  Display: server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: ati,vesa unloaded: fbdev,modesetting
  resolution: 1024x768~61Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9 128 bits)
  v: 3.3 Mesa 13.0.6

Thanks for your help!
Cheers,
Mike

I've got and old pc with 2x250 GiB hard disks and have been using Devuan (and Debian) because it's really easy to configure RAID 0 during the installation.
Is there an easy way to do it with Miyo?
Or, if not, how can I copy the Miyo Awesome desktop (which I really like) to a Devuan Awesome desktop (which I really don't like)?

Is there a way of finding the fastest repos to me? I live in South Africa, and my installation (using the net install) pulled through:

deb http://za.deb.devuan.org/merged ascii main

but that seems to get stuck on

0% [Working]

so now I'm using

deb http://pkgmaster.devuan.org/merged ascii main contrib non-free

I have no idea whether or not pkgmaster is the repo that I should be using, or if there is a South African repo available. Thanks.

I'm trying to find a minimalist desktop environment. I' really don't like LXDE. I've tried LXQT and had issues with that too (it doesn't seem to like my wifi - no problems with LXDE or XFCE). So, I'm going to give Miyo a try. If that doesn't appeal to me, it's back to good old Openbox.

#35 Re: Installation » RAID array » 2018-07-16 10:22:26

Thanks for that. I see that there's devuan_ascii_2.0.0_i386_cd-1.iso as well as _cd-2 and _cd-3. What's the difference between them?

I want to install Devuan Ascii (32 bit) on my old HP desktop. I've got 2x250GiB discs that I have partitioned into a RAID 0 array. I've had no problem doing this with the Debian installer. I'd like to know (in advance) if I can also do this with Devuan? Does it come with a Debian-style text-based installer? If so, how do I access it? I am currently downloading devuan_ascii_2.0.0_i386_desktop-live.iso.

#37 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Deadbeef music player » 2018-07-10 06:44:52

Thanks, but I need Chrome for Netflix. It's all I use it for. Usually I stick with either Seamonkey or Vivaldi (and very rarely Tor), depending on the hardware.

#38 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Deadbeef music player » 2018-07-09 14:22:49

That worked, thanks very much! I wasn't sure if I could use Debian .deb files or not. I've now also installed Google Chrome (for Netflix).

How can I install the Deadbeef music player? It's not in the repos and I don't know if I should use the Debian .deb file I've got as I'm new to Devuan Ascii.

Just for the record: Those dependencies are not missing in the case of Openbox. Openbox is very much nothing but a window manager. It is not a desktop environment. So there is no need for it to depend on anything required to handle removable media as a non-privileged user.

If they are missing very much depends on view point but i agree. I'd be quite annoyed to put it lightly if IceWM (or any window manager for that matter) started pulling in dependencies like polkit or even yike gnome stuff.

Excellent point!

Ok... I got it:

When I installed Devuan Ascii, I didn't select to install any of the desktops as I wanted to install Openbox afterwards using his link:

https://devuan.org/os/documentation/dev … nbox-guide

I've just done a fresh install, this time selecting the desktop, and it works! Clearly the desktop option installs some dependencies that are missing from the Openbox installation.

I'd like to thank all of you for taking the time to help me!

Cheers,
Mike

#42 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-27 11:17:27

still not working. A workaround is to mount it every time to /mnt/sdb1. I did chown mike /mnt/sdb1 and that seems to have worked.
btw: my  /usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 is actually /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 and I haven't got a /usr/libexec directory.

#43 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-26 06:51:55

Thanks so much! I'll have to wait until Monday to give it another try. I'm not really a fan of "desktops" (although I do have XFCE running on one pc). I much prefer a windows manager, and I've gotten to know how to make openbox behave the way I like it to.

#45 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » can't mount external device » 2018-05-25 11:28:32

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I've got usr/libexec/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &  in my autostart - no joy
gvfs is already at the newest version, as is udevil
I've tried thunar and configured it to automount - no joy

I didn't install a desktop at all: I didn't use the graphical install, and I deselected the desktop options on tasksel. But I kept the system tools. I installed openbox from the command line after the install had finished. I also installed lightdm so that I go straight into openbox. I suppose that all this might have something to do with it.

I installed Devuan Ascii 32 bit and Openbox this morning. I have been having an issue mounting my external hard disk: I use PCMANFM and click on my external drive. I'm told: "Not authorized to perform this operation". I've usually make myself part of the "wheel" group, but that doesn't seem to exist.

I just want to open PCMANFM, click on the external disk, and access my files. I really don't want to go to the command line and sudo mount/umount.

How can I automate the mounting of external devices?

Thanks!
