Maybe you could log ioptop somehow using maybe logger?
iotop needs root though.
Here you go this might be what you are looking for.
@ Giorgos, From memory and by all means not official, i remember reading another thread the devuan release last time from jessie to stretch/ascii was around 1 year, this time around might be something like 6 months. Cant find the thread just now, but pretty much will be ready when it is ready kind of ethos perhaps. Lot of work involved where Devuan doesnt have nearly as many people contributing to the project that Debian does.
Your welcome jaromil.
Ive always been careful online with my privacy but there is only so much one can do when faced with big tech and the gov when push comes to shove and then it is out of my sphere in influence or control etc. I just hope my data is secure, but where i am in some transactions we must do in regards to work, tax etc there is always the thought of what are the doing with my information, they have all of it due to the infrastructure created around being a contribute to the society banking and social norms. I like what you are trying to accomplish at dyne and elsewhere in regards to data privacy, some long term goals that are truly worthy of the people to consider.
^ not very good at nvidia support though.
I have an old amd toshiba laptop that is about 12 years old i am going to see if i can get running with openbsd, i just need a new battery pack for it. Back in 1997 i think i was using win95 on a gateway ibm clone or some such.
^ what about hardware ageing, anything from the computer world in 1997 is going to have its limitations on hardware viability depending on what it is and how well it was looked after. A good youtube channel i often watch who delves into old machines is one called LGR (lazy game reviews) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLx053 … WsBETgdKrQ
It is an interesting subject, i am inclined to think that software now like openbsd 6.5 would have some sort of limitation on working with anything from 1997, maybe if you were able to get earlier versions of openbsd would be better perhaps?
Nice work zephyr, classic dark styling just looks great. Nice comprehensive conky too.
NetworkManager has a cli program called "nmtui" type that into a terminal session.
Dutch_Master is correct, have a read of the manual pages for NetworkManager.
The gui i think is only available through the gnome package, https://pkginfo.devuan.org/stage/ascii/ … po9+1.html
I use wicd though, but have used network manager in the past.
I have no experience with bluray drives but from a websearch i found some info.
You may be able to get it working through vlc with below, i dunno really, make sure you research it.
sudo apt-get install vlc libaacs0 libbluray-bdj libbluray1
I mean, banks have had deals with credit card companies for awhile now. Many debit cards, tied to checking accounts, can be processed as credit because of Visa partnerships. And, as you rightly pointed out, most users never question this.
There is another disturbing worldview developing: the belief that companies have all your information, so there's no reason not to give up everything all the time for any situation. This kind of cynicism lets people disregard any responsibility for their actions, and as a consequence, they end up giving everything -- and they're okay with that.
Because of user mindsets, it wouldn't be surprising if banks teamed up with Facebook. On the other hand, I remain skeptical that Facebook in particular might become "the" platform for this kind of transaction, though. Third-party information sharing is already pretty pervasive. I challenge the notion that neither banks nor social media behemoths could get further information about users already.
Back to hiding in a cave for another month.
Good to see you back siva, yes quite right you are, question everything.
This will always be facebook/zucks unofficial trademark or moniker if you will.... 'They trust me, dumb $%^&'s".
Ill disappear back to my den for few days also
Ive never had an issue deleting pulseaudio in favor of alsa-utils. As golinux points out you may need apulse for firefox.
alsamixer should come up if you are in the audio group, if not it wont.
^ we know this but some 2 billion odd facebook user's dont. Majority rules unfortunately, i think this is the beginning of the must have wallet to trade. Employers already want your social status via fb or linked in etc, it wont be long until they want to pay in libra to your fb account or whatever offshoot the zuck buck determines. I find it alarming banks are backing it.
Hopefully this link is not too controversial.
https://mises.org/wire/its-no-bitcoin-f … currencies
A Libra is a unit of the Libra cryptocurrency that’s represented by a three wavy horizontal line unicode character ≋ like the dollar is represented by $. The value of a Libra is meant to stay largely stable, so it’s a good medium of exchange, as merchants can be confident they won’t be paid a Libra today that’s then worth less tomorrow. The Libra’s value is tied to a basket of bank deposits and short-term government securities for a slew of historically stable international currencies, including the dollar, pound, euro, Swiss franc and yen. The Libra Association maintains this basket of assets and can change the balance of its composition if necessary to offset major price fluctuations in any one foreign currency so that the value of a Libra stays consistent.
This all reminds me of when the euro hit back in the late 90's early 2000's.
yes, but before ASCII was stable, I was on buster (dual-boot win, deb, dev). BAsically, what I'm asking, when did or will Beowulf become safer to use than ceres
Most likely when Devuan announces that Beowulf is out of testing phase and into stable. Unless im mistaken but im sure release model is the same as Debian, sid/ceres will always be unstable, buster/beowulf currently in testing.
Welcome to Riseup Black
This is the home of the Riseup "Black" services, our new enhanced security VPN and (soon) Email. These services require the Bitmask application.
Important: To avoid possible issues, you will need to create a new account (this means a new username) to use the "Black" services. But don't fear, you will be later able to use your current username if you want.
The trigger may have been the RT link golinux, my apologies. The Max Kaiser report has more to do with finances than political ideologies and the segment with Jaromil from dyne.org was along the lines of feeding the ever expanding web of the surveillance state. Just some interesting insights into cryptocurrency, privacy and facebook ethics.
I have no issues if this thread gets closed again due to political rants as this was not my intention when i posted this thread.
It is not totally open source software i dont believe, that is why you will not find it on Devuan or Debian.
I use the following...
ublock origin
privacy badger
canvas blocker
decentraleyes
https everywhere
I regularly watch RT news and saw this episode today with Jaromil from dyne.org being interviewed by Max Kaiser on the Kaiser report. Was a good segment and Jaromil brought up some very concerning points about the "zuck buck"....
https://www.rt.com/shows/keiser-report/ … on-market/
catch it on youtube as well, starts at around 11:50 mark.
You could try the f2fs file system which is made for flash based storage drives.
https://www.usenix.org/conference/fast1 … tation/lee
usb 3.0 would be a better medium i think for what Dutch_Master points out about sd cards.
If using EXT4 you should probably disable the journal and improve the file system performance as mentioned in the link below but that comes at a cost for system stability.I really dont think it would be worth it on an sdhc card.
Be careful to take note of the messages apt gives you when installing openrc as it will remove sysv-rc.
Im not talking about a new installation of devuan either rather an already established installation of devuan without openrc.
^ Atleast you have a grub backup on the sd card for the harddrive, could come in handy.
There is no difference between SD card and HDD. Just install bootloader on SD card when installer will ask you. You can also chroot to your SD card and install GRUB manually.
I think that is what OP is having an issue with ?
Ive only ever done this with archbang linux and used the installer to install system to /dev/sdb1 then chroot and install grub for multiboot as i linked to in last post of mine. I will have to do an experiment and see if i can install devuan to an sd card.
I know on archlinux you can do the following. Ive never tried this on an sd card or devuan though.
grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --boot-directory=/DATA_MOUNTPOINT/boot /dev/sdX3
That way it wont add itself to the grub menu on your hdd and you can boot from the bios. But check below link for more info as you will then need to configure grub on the drive. Go to the section on "Configuring GRUB"
