no, I will not use Devuan unstable completely but check if there are packages not available in Devuan Jessie being able to be used by pinning in Devuan Jessie. I hope pinning is possible?
Why not look in ASCII and/or Beowulf repos for what you need before jumping to Ceres.

snapd is on the banned package list for systemd dependency. So no you wouldn't be able to install snaps on Devuan. Unless, of course, you adopt and maintain that package to remove the dependency from release to release.

Some DMs are more friendly that others to setting locales. KDE can be a bit fussy with this. Please read the Release notes and also search this forum for KDE.

Why anyone would recommend appimage, flatpak or snaps is beyond me. It's a great way to bloat your system. And is there any way to know what exactly is in those options of convenience?
Even on the Falkon page, the first recommendation is to "install falkon package from your distribution’s repositories".

Start with backports and work your way further from ASCII. Be prepared that it may or may not go smoothly. Not much has been done on beowulf yet.

Backports is an optional repository that builds testing pkgs for stable. Add it to your sources.list. But be selective and only install the pkgs that you need, not everything that's available in there.

Have you checked ASCII backports? Maybe you could package it yourself if all else fails. At least they aren't on the list of banned packages so that's a good start.

The recommended sources are defined here:

deb.devuan.org is a pool of mirrors that are all synced to pkgmaster.
The maintainer of that wiki will hopefully be changing that presently .

There is no reason to assume that in Debian sysvinit, openrc and runit will continue to be available or that every application won't require systemd to work.

The release notes for the upcoming stable are quite detailed and might help walk you through some of the pitfalls of an ASCII install/upgrade. There are also dev1fanboy's install and upgrade guides on the website. Of course every user has different needs and every release has different pitfalls and not all of those cases can be addressed.

Your post ("started out on a VPS with Debian 8 upgraded to Devuan Jessie ") made me remember that I've seen "somewhere" a post explaining how to covert debian 8 from systemd to to sysVinit, and one of the OSs on offer at the hoster is debian jessie (which I think is 8, I'm no good with names, numbers lend themselves more to chronological order).
I thought it was always advised to go to sysvinit on debian before transitioning to devuan.

. I'm 67, with cataract on the horizon. In fact I've had poor eye sight for more than 25 years and it's getting worse each time I have a checkup, resulting in new glasses.
Although dev1galaxy.org is ok, I find it _very_ difficult to use devuan.org, especially in the evening. Worst of all are links I've visited before [a:visited] --- I simply don't see them without turning style sheets off. Don't forget the baby boomers are all old farts now. Contrast is the best fix for that, some countries even have minimum requirements for contrast. Please (!) try to look into that.
I can sympathize. I've got about 10 years on you and also have cataracts. When this site was first created we did test for usability, and they passed the various standards. The link colors in this second iteration have even more contrast so I'm surprised to hear that you're still having problems. The browser that you're using may have an addon to fix things like that. I have tweaked many websites with Stylish or userChrome or even nosquint to change link and other colors to suit me. I also reduce monitor brightness with xrandr to 65%. And some sites require that I bold the font or increase size.

This discussion is quite over my head but I would just like to add that this very forum started out on a VPS with Debian 8 upgraded to Devuan Jessie so I know it can be done. But I guess not all VPS are created equal and I assume that you're trying to upgrade from Stretch to ASCII not Jessie. One thing that caught my eye was apt-get autoclean which triggered a memory of someone having trouble with that. Poke around the forum and DNG mail list for references to "autoclean" and you might get some clues. Also, the stable release is very, very soon so you might try again with the stable iso which may fix that glitch. Unfortunately, I can't help beyond that. (I'm the one who plays with the crayons.)

In your case, I'd use the label LABEL="MXLinux" which is human readable rather than UUID in your fstab.
