#2551 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 02:59:00

Backports is an optional repository that builds testing pkgs for stable.  Add it to your sources.list.   But be selective and only install the pkgs that you need, not everything that's available in there.

https://devuan.org/os/etc/apt/sources.list

#2552 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment & Falkon » 2018-06-12 02:42:38

Have you checked ASCII backports?  Maybe you could package it yourself if all else fails.  At least they aren't on the list of banned packages so that's a good start.

#2553 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Missing *gotta-have* program... » 2018-06-12 00:46:50

Have you checked pkginfo.devuan.org?  And also backports?

#2554 Re: Installation » pkgmaster.devuan.org or deb.devuan.org? » 2018-06-11 14:55:39

The recommended sources are defined here:
https://devuan.org/os/etc/apt/sources.list

deb.devuan.org is a pool of mirrors that are all synced to pkgmaster.

The maintainer of that wiki will hopefully be changing that presently .

#2555 Re: Devuan » Why Devuan? » 2018-06-10 07:16:32

There is no reason to assume that in Debian sysvinit, openrc and runit will continue to be available or that every application won't require systemd to work.

Of course.  Sorry I didn't make that clearer.

#2558 Re: Installation » Post Install House Keeping » 2018-06-07 23:58:10

The release notes for the upcoming stable are quite detailed and might help walk you through some of the pitfalls of an ASCII install/upgrade.   There are also dev1fanboy's install and upgrade guides on the website.  Of course every user has different needs and every release has different pitfalls and not all of those cases can be addressed.

Question:

and if from mxlinux i go to fstab and change what is over there:

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
/dev/sda3 / auto defaults,noatime 1 1

to this:

UUID=6e55911a-2620-4ab6-b2b5-1458602e6252       /       ext4    defaults,noatime        0       1
UUID=0b4a75ba-8b74-47b1-8aaa-2d971f92732f       swap    swap    defaults        0       0
LABEL=MXLinux    /mnt    auto defaults,noatime     0     0

Congratulations!!!!   Didn't I suggest exactly that here?

Your post ("started out on a VPS with Debian 8 upgraded to Devuan Jessie ") made me remember that I've seen "somewhere" a post explaining how to covert debian 8 from systemd to to sysVinit, and one of the OSs on offer at the hoster is debian jessie (which I think is 8, I'm no good with names, numbers lend themselves more to chronological order).

I thought it was always advised to go to sysvinit on debian before transitioning to devuan.

@golinux: As you mention "crayons" in your post I have to have a word with you wink. I'm 67, with cataract on the horizon. In fact I've had poor eye sight for more than 25 years and it's getting worse each time I have a checkup, resulting in new glasses.

Although dev1galaxy.org is ok, I find it _very_ difficult to use devuan.org,  especially in the evening. Worst of all are links I've visited before [a:visited] --- I simply don't see them without turning style sheets off. Don't forget the baby boomers are all old farts now. Contrast is the best fix for that, some countries even have minimum requirements for contrast. Please (!) try to look into that.

I can sympathize.  I've got about 10 years on you and also have cataracts.  When this site was first created we did test for usability, and they passed the various standards.  The link colors in this second iteration have even more contrast so I'm surprised to hear that you're still having problems.  The browser that you're using may have an addon to fix things like that.  I have tweaked many websites with Stylish or userChrome or even nosquint to change link and other colors to suit me.   I also reduce monitor brightness with xrandr to 65%.  And some sites require that I bold the font or increase size.

This discussion is quite over my head but I would just like to add that this very forum started out on a VPS with Debian 8 upgraded to Devuan Jessie so I know it can be done.  But I guess not all VPS are created equal and I assume that you're trying to upgrade from Stretch to ASCII not Jessie.  One thing that caught my eye was apt-get autoclean which triggered a memory of someone having trouble with that.  Poke around the forum and DNG mail list for references to "autoclean" and you might get some clues.  Also, the stable release is very, very soon so you might try again with the stable iso which may fix that glitch.  Unfortunately, I can't help beyond that.  (I'm the one who plays with the crayons.)

@keos . . . we are both developers!   Trust me, fsmithred is the best person to help you on this.

#2563 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Problems going into another operative system. [solved] » 2018-06-05 15:41:36

In your case, I'd use the label LABEL="MXLinux" which is human readable rather than UUID in your fstab.

Btw, it's a good idea to use code tags when posting config files. That makes it more readable.

keos wrote:

This is what i have at  /etc/fstab what do you means by to put an entry for MX partition?

Yes.  I have these entries in my jessie fstab just in case I ever need something from there.  You should do something similar if you want to access MX from Devuan.

#wheezy root
UUID=0bd40b55-d186-42bd-ae7d-764c90a2414b /wroot	ext4	ro,noatime 0 0
#wheezy home
UUID=16bd883c-e550-4883-895c-a4564730b242 /whome	ext4	ro,noatime 0 0

I forgot to said that in MXLinux Devuan is not even over there.

Sorry, it is over there but not as Devuan but as "volume of 104 GB".

MXLinux:

 GNU nano 2.7.4                          Fichero: /etc/fstab

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
/dev/sda3 / auto defaults,noatime 1 1

I suggest to always use UUID or labels rather than partition numbers (/dev/sdxx) which could change if you add removable devices and put you in a world of hurt..

#2572 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Problems going into another operative system. [solved] » 2018-06-01 18:37:32

I assume you want to mount MX to read files there.  If so you will need to put an entry for your MX partitions(s) in Devuan's /etc/fstab.   And the reverse in MX if you want to mount devuan from a running MX system.

No one is offended and no apology is needed.  The elves are working very hard in the workshop which unfortunately leaves some very public tracks for the curious kiddies to find.  Adding a "?" at the end of the subject would make your find more speculative . . .
