#1 Re: Installation » Will the netinstall (daedalus) install nonfree wifi drivers for me? » 2023-12-08 12:49:26

Thanks both for the replies.

Well, the netinstall is meant for computers which have a working (wired) network connection to download everything that is not on this small media. So if the wifi requires drivers most likely they are not included. You either need to use the CD or DVD version, or identify the chip used.

Thanks for the clarity on this! I have access to a wired connection via an adapter, so is it recommended that I continue with the netinstall and then just install the nonfree firmware from the repos? Or should I default to using the Live Desktop or the Desktop installer which comes bundled with the firmware already? I'm aiming for a slim install so that's why I've initially went down the netinstall route.

In any case, I'll run the lspci command on my current install and report back here :-)

All installer ISO include (on the ISO) all firmware available in the repositories.

Choose the "1 Install" method.

Thanks for this. I think I'll be getting it from the repos, I was just confused as to whether the netinstall would handle installing the proper firmware for me (ie if it was bundled already or not), but it looks like I'll just be nabbing it from the repos!

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade to daedalus via fresh install on both my machines. When installing Chimera originally, I used the Live Desktop installer but I'm going down the netinstall route this time so it's a little different for me. My laptop's wifi drivers are nonfree, and they were included in the Chimera live desktop installer. The netinstall is asking for an external medium with the drivers, which indicates they're not on the netinstall disc.

If I connect my wifi to an ethernet adapter and complete the install, will the netinstall automatically fetch and install my wifi drivers, or is this something I should expect to need to do manually e.g. via apt? If so, any advice on discovering/selecting the correct packages would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

#3 DIY » Best way to decouple autostarting daemons from WM in dotfiles? » 2023-11-20 20:08:49

Hi all,

I'm tinkering to make my config more modular, and want to decouple autostarting some daemons from my WM e.g. udiskie, transmission-daemon, mpd, etc. I was wondering what the best way to do that was via dotfiles?

I remove these autostarting via services because by default my user can't access my music library via mpd, or  interact with the transmission-daemon etc. so I currently have them started via my WM's config file e.g.

(in ~/.config/i3/config)

exec --no-startup-id mpd
exec --no-startup-id transmission-daemon

etc.

My goal is to make my setup a bit more modular so that if/when I jump ship to a different WM, I won't need to configure as much. My first thought was to put these in ~/.bash_profile because I sometimes don't even run an X environment and just use a tty. However that felt off to me somehow because I've not heard of it before.

Anyone have any reckons or any experience with this? Is putting this stuff in ~/.bash_profile ok? Or should I be using the services better? Something else? Ideally it's something I can write into a config somewhere to manage as part of my dotfiles repo.

Very keen to learn what other people do and also what would be technically "correct", if applicable.

#4 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Can't update firefox-esr from v91.13.0; problem or intended behaviour? » 2023-03-29 17:41:51

Thanks both! That's exactly what the issue was. I'm not sure why these weren't enabled, as I've basically just taken the default installs and only really changed my window manager on each. It's strange that it's occurred on both machines!

Thanks so much for this. I've worked out how to interpret this page a bit better now.

Thanks again to both for kind and prompt responses.

Hi folks,

I was wondering if I could get a quick sense-check on whether I'm experiencing a bug with my installs or not. Both of my Devuan Chimaera installs (a laptop which I set up a while ago and a more recent desktop install) have firefox-esr 0.91.13.0 installed via apt.

The desktop is my work machine which I migrated from Debian recently, so I've been getting several sites warning me the browser version is outdated or unsupported. The browser version is the same on my other install on my laptop, but I've just not received a warning from any sites I've visited. I checked pkginfo.devuan.org and see that the current version of firefox-esr is 102.9.0esr-2:

* https://pkginfo.devuan.org/cgi-bin/pack … 2.9.0esr-2

If I run apt update and apt upgrade, I don't get a prompt to update firefox-esr. This is true across both of my installs.

Is this intended behaviour and I'm misunderstanding the package management on Devuan? Or is it something to address? I'm generally fine using older versions of software but with browsers I like to have security patches. I'd prefer not to deviate too much from apt packages if possible, so want to avoid compiling from source or using tarballs.

Thanks in advance.
