#1 Other Issues » Graphical glitches on Radeon RX 6700 XT with proper firmware/Mesa... » 2021-04-25 13:07:10

I had posted this question (probably in the wrong section of the forum) but what separates (system76 Pop!_OS) from Debian/Devuan when trying to get these to work. I read somewhere that Pop!_OS had extracted files from the official amdgpu files from AMD. What prevents me from using these files for Ubuntu/Debian combo (Pop!_OS) on my pure Devuan install? Once installed on Devuan I get graphical glitches all over the place from the terminal when it refreshes to my Steam games, etc. On Devuan (Chimaera) all the firmware files were in place and I updated to the newer mesa 21.x. Everything was fine until I swapped out a RX 570 for a RX 6700 XT. I was able to boot w/o using "nomodeset" and I was able to use the higher resolution. Does anyone have a solution or suggestion that would allow me to move back to Devuan? I also tried using Artix with some installs from the AUR that used to be on top of things with modern hardware, but again, the same glitches I experienced with Devuan. I also tried lastly before installing Pop!_OS to change the install files from AMD from "ubuntu" to "devuan" which allowed me to install most of the files all the way up to the dkms stuff which it refused.

Thank you for your time (readers) & hope you all have a great day!

#2 Devuan » Devuan variant with RX 6700 XT support out-of-the-box? » 2021-04-20 15:12:17

I used the latest firmware files with the "Navy_Flounder" firmware, I installed mesa 21.1.x and was still getting graphics gilteches and artifacts. So far with all of my searching only one distro (Pop!_OS) was able to get rid of all the glitches and make my gpu usable(without annoyances). Is there a "bleeding-edge" variant of Devuan that would take extra steps like Pop! to allow modern hardware to be used? I was happily running Devuan Chimaera for a long time with 100% satisfaction until I upgraded from a RX 570 to a RX 6700 XT. Sadly this pop!_os that I'm using right now is two things that I don't want: 1) Ubuntu & 2) systemd. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

#3 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] How do I add "Experimental" to my repo for Mesa 21? » 2021-04-13 19:49:45

Updating them from the experimental repo was the idea, until mesa 21.x gets pushed into testing where I can update it like the rest of my system. I have installed the updated vulkan/mesa objects to version 21.x and I will just "reinstall" them until I finish reading the link you gave me on pinning when I can add that for ease of use. Thank you all for the links and your time.

It appears that I have done something wrong, I commented out my regular repos and only used the two that were posted above. . . Then attempted to search like I always have (probably wrong) " apt search mesa" and I just assumed that with the experimental stuff being there it would have shown a newer version. Can you please give me the command for searching "experimental" ? Thank you.

This is what returns when I type the above:

mesa-common-dev:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 20.3.4-1
  Version table:
     20.3.4-1 500
        500 http://deb.devuan.org/merged chimaera/main amd64 Packages

(I"m sorry, I misread the first post about adding DEBIAN experimental to my sources.list.... )

I've sorted the mess out. Thank you for the help. . .

I've never fully understood the apt pinning, can you provide a comprehensive tutorial link?

I have tried this and it still shows mesa 20.x(installed), do I need to be on ceres for this to work?

I searched this forum before asking and I didn't want to mess anything up, as this is now the longest I have kept any one distro on my computer. I am currently on Chimaera and have had very minimal problems, however, I have a new GPU coming in and Phoronix recommends Mesa 21.x so I am planning on using it one way or another and Sid is still on 20.x and requires "Experimental" be added so I am hoping some light can be shed on this for me.

Thank you all for your time and assistance in this matter.

With the amount of packages I have installed it's very unusual to not have at least one update in multiple days... Last time it was an issue where an attempt was made to optimize the download servers. Can anyone confirm that the updates are working? (This is happening on 3x separate systems). Thanks in advance. smile

#8 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Alien on Chimaera Failing with Error 25 » 2021-02-28 17:00:21

Open the file located at:

/usr/share/perl5/Alien/Package/Deb.pm

Change:

                 dh $@
To:

                 dh \$\@

Should look like:

# debian/rules for alien

PACKAGE=\$(shell dh_listpackages)

%:
    dh \$\@

override_dh_clean:
    dh_clean -d

*** This totally fixed the issue, if someone needs or wants to see the source it was found at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=983492
Many thanks, dice, for pointing me in the right direction.

Aww, man. I should have named myself "Knucklehead" instead. Thank you for making me aware to check the base distro's forums. smile I'll be 100% sure to check Debian forums in the future before I waste anyone's time. Take care && have a great day!

The debian forum may show a fix, but muliple posts are confusing me. It's only a few days old from the issue, so I'll just keep checking for a fix.

#10 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] Alien on Chimaera Failing with Error 25 » 2021-02-27 12:12:21

I'm using alien to convert tar.bz2 into .deb packages...
So there isn't an install "package" yet.

I have 4 other computers that I need to install these packages on.

I also tried installing directly from alien with "-i" and i still get error 25.

***Also, all the packages are x86_64***

The I keep several versions as backups. Ones that previously converted into .deb successfully are no longer doing that. I don't recall when it took place and didn't think about it when installing updates, but something has changed in the last ~month that alien no longer functions the way that it did previously.

Package build failed. Here's the log:
dh
dh: error: specify a sequence to run
make: *** [debian/rules:7: binary] Error 25

***

The above is the exact error I get when trying to convert into a .deb for easy install. This previously worked and have been using it for a very long time, and it's not the file as I tried to convert one that I previously had success with to see if it was the file. I tried so many combos in the search engine and couldn't find anything similar to this. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have been using Devuan for years now and want to thank everyone involved with keeping this project running. I briefly left during ASCII to Artix for games support and certain Vulkan/Mesa/Steam/Etc support, but with Chimaera the modern media/gaming has been great.
