#2 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » how to easily copy a windows partition? » 2023-04-04 16:41:46

Why the hell do you make everything so complex? How in the world did qcow2 get in here?

This makes a copy of your Windows partition to your usb drive or whatever:

dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/yourusbdrive/win7backup

Then you mount your backup:

mount /yourusbdrive/win7backup /mnt

And copy all your stuff from /mnt to your new Windows install. No need for virtual machines or any of this crap.

There was a topic called "Devuan: Existential issues." where a person had legitimate issues but was met with unfriendly responses. I had similar issues back when I tried Devuan and found some solutions, so maybe this will help someone.

I installed devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop.iso, XFCE desktop environment, which was probably the default, I have no clue about all the different desktop environments.

I was surprised there is no way to change your password or add and remove new users and groups. Anyway, one solution is to install gnome-system-tools which seems to work quite well. After installing, the program will be found in Applications > System > Users and Groups.

So install it from the terminal with the command below or use the Synaptic package manager.

sudo apt-get install gnome-system-tools

The "Users and Groups" program has a setting called "Don't ask for password on login" but it's not functional. To make it work, go to Manage Groups and add a group called "nopasswdlogin". Then, in /etc/pam.d/slim, add the following line above @include common-auth:

auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin

The package gnome-system-tools is inside the .iso, so you can install it from there, but I had issues with package managers accepting the .iso as a source for packages. Anyway, what I did is modify /etc/apt/sources.list like this:

deb [ allow-insecure=yes ] file:/some/path/devuan_iso chimaera contrib main non-free

The entire path (/some/path/devuan_iso) needs to have no spaces in it. From the .iso, I copied the folder "Devuan 4.01" into the folder devuan_iso, or maybe I copied the contents of "Devuan 4.01" into it, forgot which it is.

There is 358 views on this thread, how many of the readers have any clue of what is this all about? Such personal conflicts really do not belong here.

There's another open source project born out of a need to fight a common cause where the participants are infighting and making themselves look stupid.

I'm just a silent lurker who had to chime in.

Okay, I'll raise the issue with the administrators. We've had another user report the same problem so something must be wrong. Thanks for the feedback.

SSL is not working

The boards have never supported https and they probably never will. It is not a problem unless you use the same password everywhere, which is a stupid thing to do.

Thank you. To be honest I don't care much about SSL, but may I ask why Debian forums choose not to use it?

Also, r8168-dkms description says "...for RealTek ... Gigabit Ethernet controllers with PCI-Express interface." while mine is PCI, not PCI-Express. Will this driver still work for me? And from what I see, I must compile it myself?

It's impossible to register on Debian forums

Why? What happens when you try? I'm a moderator on the Debian forums so I might be able to help with that and you really shouldn't be posting a Debian problem here.

FWIW you can try the r8168 driver instead and see if that's any more stable:

https://packages.debian.org/buster/r8168-dkms

Thank you, I will try that.

I can't register because I am not receiving the verification email for six hours, I tried the re-send button. My mail is yahoo.com. As a side note, the confirmation code while registering is inhumanely difficult to read and SSL is not working.

Hello, I hope you won't kick me out for using Debian 10? It's impossible to register on Debian forums, so I thought maybe someone could help me here. I did consider changing to Devuan though.

So here's the problem, I have a PCI NIC and sometimes in dmesg I get this message:

Often I was able to trigger it by initiating a download with wget and nearly maxing out the bandwidth. When I would do it via SSH, the shell would hang for a few seconds, then return some time later. But not always, other times I could seemingly push the link to the max for a long time. It also recently happened with high activity on a BitTorrent client.

Could a BIOS update help? I'm hesitant to do it because the update process is very inconvenient and I've read about issues with later BIOS versions on this board.

A little more info:

Could this have something to do with power management or IRQ? This is the only PCI card on this board.

The message in dmesg mentions "[245059.532960]  ? pfifo_fast_enqueue+0xf0/0xf0", could I try a different queue algorithm, if that's what it is?
