Until they reach EOL: https://www.kernel.org/category/releases.html

Sounds like a regression. These are unfortunately common in Linux because the kernel developers are so keen to add new features that they keep breaking old ones. You should either attempt to find the cause yourself with a git bisect or report the issue to the kernel developers to help them fix it — they can't fix it if they don't know about it.

Using an outdated, EOL kernel is unwise. New kernel vulnerabilities are published frequently.

Okay, well that good news for 4.19.

Im not knowledgeable of kernels very much but do know when i used kernels in unstable i would get lockups so better for me to stay in stable as i dont get such issue. The 4.9 kernel to me was the best for my machine although i did have to use dkms to get wifi working but this was fixed in 4.19.

Voidlinux is good except for one thing... I don't like that they have a very new kernel.  Also, no linux-libre option.

Void have an LTS kernel metapackage which is currently tracking the 4.14 branch and also offer 4.4, 4.9 & 4.19. Their kernels are already de-blobbed.

Devuan at least has that option thanks to jxself.org

Devuan's kernels are also de-blobbed, no need to rely on third-party repositories.

I wonder how long they will keep those kernels around for? I need kernel 4.19 anything later on my machine as i get lockups, dont know why.

Best way to do secure banking is to visit the bank in person perhaps?

#5 Re: Installation » netinstall or dvd images » 2020-10-03 15:56:12

at which point another medium of hardware might be able to transfer the data from and archival dvd/blueray. I dont doubt this at all, will have to wait and see smile

firefox is not basilisk and tor browser is not palemoon. What are you talking about?

For archives you should use archival Blu-Rays or DVDs. Hard drives don't last long.

Will dvd / blue ray drives be around 20 years from now?  It might be ok to say yes archive on this medium it is future proof, but is it?

#9 Re: Installation » netinstall or dvd images » 2020-09-30 13:08:08

yep im get confused on this, sorry for posting.

The dvd sets from debian sound like a good idea. I dont want whole repo just enough of a variety of programs, the 3 dvd images debian has at 4g each seem like that would cover what i wanted.

I had planned to have time capsule of my old laptop with a few hard disks with debian, devuan and slackware on them, put them into faraday sealed suitcase and put into storage area, but then i think of battery life of the laptops so probably not a good idea, so maybe just the hard disks with cables and mounting hardware / external enclosures.

Is in your opinion the virtual disk a better method for this type of archive?

#10 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Beowulf: how to remove xfce and install mate, without breaking system » 2020-09-29 14:48:11

Drop to other tty like say tty2 and

sudo apt purge xfce4*

  then install mate.

Removing xfce4 this way probably take with it many dependence programs, so take note or uninstall one by one i think.

#11 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED (sorta)]Fat xfce activity bars » 2020-09-29 14:44:16

That is because device activity bars in xfce are not very customizable. You probably better of using a conky bar rather than xfce4 panel widgets.

Hello

i have old hard drive i want to fill with devuan, i want to have it as archive for operating system and programs that may work 20 years from now on hardware i have that works with devuan fine. What would be the best way of getting a vast library of packages, i dont want whole debian repositories just broad spectrum of applications. Would i be better off installing from dvd sets or can netinstall do same thing?

edit: oops im sorry, i come from debian and see there is no dvd sets available that i search for, maybe in the future i hope.

I suppose slackware is better option for archival operation linux system. I have so many issues last 6 months with systemd and debuan when i find devuan it just work and keep working day after day, same with slackware.
