hi,

sorry for the radio silence.
laptop is being a pain in the butt.
it is not conneting to wifi, and i cannot seem to get it to.

have tried various terminal commands, but it doesn,t seem to find anyting.
pretty sure its not hardwae, but will reseat the wifi card just in case.
Seriously considering a fresh install if I can get my data onto a spare drive.

can i reinstall keeping files from the Devuan recovery at login?

Apologies for changing the goalposts

HI,

Thanks for the reply.

I am intending on replying:-), but when I append 'code' and '/code' to the beginning and end of your code, it takes me to another program Visual Studio Code?

Sorry, doesn't take long to reach the limit of my knowledge on this subject.

Well- would you believe it - it  works?

here is terminal output to confirm change:

    Kernel driver in use: wl
    Kernel modules: ssb, wl

happy - but a bit confused- I have never used this driver ,as all the info suggests my bcm 4322 (14E4:432B)  is provided for by the alternate drivers?

AH well - thanks very much for the suggestion 'head on a stick"

As an aside I'm not sure you want that "beowulf-proposed-updates" source line, it may cause problems in the future. Unless you want to help find bugs ofc.

I'll give it a whirl :-)

Hi,

I disagree

A fresh install means we can rule out any 'cxxp' that might be in the system caused by noobs ( ie  me smile ) messing about, not quite knowing what they are doing- just in case it might be the problem

Will post output when I get home

O.K

back.

I have a rule that if it takes me more than a couple of days to troubleshoot, then I fresh install.

My time - and life - is too short :-)

Its what I've always done - even with my windoze and mac installs.

SO---

Fresh install with ethernet cable connected.

I presume it will have updated to latest Beowulf?

Used dpkg in terminal to install b43 fw-cutter , and firmware b43 installer.

All went fine.

Using default  WIcd manager getting stupidly low speeds , and stupidly high ''invalid misc" - even if I park myself  a foot away from the router.

This was receiving full speed  ( 30-35 mb/s)  about two weeks ago??

IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"xxxxxxx"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.432 GHz  Access Point: 94:0B:19:B7:98:C8

Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:86  Invalid misc:1196   Missed beacon:0

My troubleshooting as a noob is poor , but the only thing I can think has changed is beowulf itself? - the version

confused

P>S  OK,  I installed a fresh copy of windows 10, wifi is working great on that, so I don't think its is hardware related.
have reinstalled Devuan again - same problem as before.

HI,

I have a recent install of devuan.

it was working fine up to about a week ago.

Since then , my wifi speed has dropped to about a tenth available?

Our other house devices all achieve maximum speed via the same wifi

I have completely removed any software installed from the last two weeks ago, just in case, but no luck.

<iwconfig wlan0>      gives me;

IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"xxxxxx"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.432 GHz  Access Point: 94:0B:19:B7:98:C8
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=59/70  Signal level=-51 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0  Rx invalid crypt:0  Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:164  Invalid misc:4054   Missed beacon:0

Anybody any ideas on troubleshooting? - I am a linux noob.

Hardware is  BCM 4322 chip, and rtl 8168 adapter.

I changed from Wicd manager to network manager - but nothing changed.

I vaguely remember  something on install about a rtl8168 firmware not being found, so I have installed the latest ''dkms' for that hardware?

Many thanks in advance.

Can we see

apt install --simulate gnome-keyring

Might be best to open another thread about this though.

here is the output:

apt install --simulate gnome-keyring
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt needs root privileges for real execution.
Keep also in mind that locking is deactivated,
so don't depend on the relevance to the real current situation!

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gnome-keyring is already the newest version (3.28.2-5).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

- since I avoided anything catastrophic, I might just leave this - I sense the rabbit hole might be a bit deep for a noob  :-)

#19 Re: Installation » appimages? » 2021-02-08 12:19:50

O.K.

that was wierd?

I tried to install gnome keyring using synaptic.

it said in order to install this it had to remove - a long list of stuff?

In fact this list was so long I didn't do it - it even included xfce4  stuff, and other appimages I have that work fine? - whats going on there!

I found the .deb package that I installed instead.

Didn't seem to make any difference.

So went to the link Dice gave about missing libraries.

Tried to install the packages that included the libraries.

I still can't run by double clicking, but if I run from terminal using <--no-sandbox>, it runs.

Now just need to find a way of running from the desktop without having to go into terminal all the time:-)

cheers

If you want my advice, dont use appimages. Use services like tutanota or protonmail and learn how to use gpg to encrypt messages over the net. Ive used tutanota to send encrypted emails that they say are end to end encrypted only for the recipient who uses yahoo is able to fully read the email i sent that was supposedly encrypted.I would be surprised if this cryptext email is actually end to end encrypted.

edit: i guess im just reiterating that the endpoint of end to end encryption is a security risk. Most services offer encrypted tansfer of emails, but if doesn't land at the other end encrypted then it is not truly end to end encrypted imo.

HI,

I am using  a reasonably fresh( 2 month) old install of devuan.

I am trying to run an appimage.

It is for an email client - called Criptext.

In ''properties'' for the image, , I have altered the permission to read & write, and also made the image ''executable''

However, no matter what I do , the app will not run upon double click.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong :-)

Not sure - will have to see what happens for a week or so
I ''may'' have found an answer to my unreliable wicd.
Turns out my network card is rtl 1868. I needed to install a relevant. dkms, to prevent devuan defaulting to RTL 1869, if connection dropped or changed
