thank you all for your work and for this share
I work with my laptop with chimaera as the only installed OS
thanks again for the great work you are doing
nomorelogic
same form me, using old kernel all works correctly
i downloaded a .deb package
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.30-148432~Debian~bullseye_amd64.deb
in /etc/apt/sources.list
deb [arch=amd64] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian bullseye contrib
now I've Virtualbox is updated to 6.1.34 r150636 (Qt5.15.2)
I can say I had no problem until this kernel update
hi all
I need some help using virtualbox.
I installed some time ago Virtualbox on my Devuan Chimaera, kernel was 5.10.0-14.
I can use VirtualBox correctly without any trouble with this system
Recently I updated the kernel
$ uname -a
Linux mapmobile 5.10.0-16-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.127-1 (2022-06-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Now all my VMs can start running but I get some malfunctions on my VMs (in example, inside VM Win10: (1) unaspected and frequent reboots and (2) some software like brawe browser close itself while running).
Fortunately I can still use 5.10.0-14 at boot.
Any idea to fix this?
Thanks in advance.
nomorelogic
well... this response is from devuan chimaera with xfce installed
# uname -a
Linux refracta 5.10.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.19-1 (2021-03-02) x86_64 GNU/Linux
thanks to command dhclient I was able to connect to network
and yes, I don't have a wired interface on board but I need a usb/thunderbolt to connect as wired
All update done as:
#apt update
#apt upgrade
#tasksel
@jacksprat
I don't know the difference between apt and apt-get, looking around I found that "apt is better way in devuan/debian shell".
Do I'm wrong?
I can see this is a pre-beta, some fixes are needed but I think I can use this installation to experiment.
Just to let you know:
This is content of file interfaces:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
If I can help to test something you can ask.
after reboot and log in xfce, to connect to network, dhclient was needed again
now I can see only wired interface but I've wifi too.
I hope I can uses wifi in future.

quick update:
voidlinux (x86_64, glibc, xfce) installed correctly
works great!
next time I'll try refracta and chimaera
Ok, I'll try chimaera iso and refractainstaller.
I need some days, but I'll do this test.
Modern INTEL processor: can I suggest that you download a modern, live distro such as one from
https://voidlinux.org/download/
as Void kernels are from 2021, [5.10.17], it would be quick way of exploring this issue.
thank you
I'll surely try voidlinux
hi guys and thanks for you support!
whell, to tell the whole story, I'm leaving my historical distro cause need a new laptop and my historical distro still use "the init system that shall not be named".
Currently, on my new laptop, I have a dual boot: artix and devuan. Artix boots correctly but (1) it's not stable as I need and (2) I prefer Devuan.
With dual boot (I think) I can try Chimaera but...
Head_on_a_Stick had a guide but says "but neither option is ideal".
fsmithred had chimaera-based live isos but: no xorg...
Well, I undestand, it’s too early for chimaera.
Do you think it’s possible, in the near future, to experiment with chimaera and a desktop environment?
Thanks again!
hi wdp
entered using recovery mode from boot menù
I followed your instructions but doesn't work
anyway sourcelist are updated but "apt upgrade" can't find anything to do: all seems to be already updated
after some time I watched devuan from afar I was determined to use it with the new laptop
I’m starting to think I can’t...
if there are other ideas please tell me
What is your CPU? If it starts with 10 or 11 then you're shit out of luck with beowulf.
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 142
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10510U CPU @ 1.80GHz
Can I abort devuan install?
Andre4freedom wrote:Intel chips work well
10th generation Intel chips onwards need a newer Mesa version than is available for Devuan beowulf. The same is true for the most recent AMD cards.
The OP should also note that all current graphics cards require non-free firmware even with the open source drivers supplied by the kernel.

EDIT: and please change the thread title — your machine doesn't "hang", it just fails to load the graphical desktop.
thanks for this link but no success here
I followed 1st step (added "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to the end of the line that starts with "linux") but at boot (ctrl+x) I 've same blank screen with cursor blinking
nomorelogic wrote:server ssh
Can you connect from another machine?
No, just tested, unable to connect
I own a HP elitebook PC (Hewlett-Packard HP EliteBook 8460p/161C)
and it runs like a charm with Devuan Beowulf.
All I can say is this:
- first of all, make sure you reset all BIOS-settings to default,
- then make sensible changes you wish to it.
- then, if UEFI boot mode is used, disable "Secure Boot" (That means DO NOT USE THE TPM)
You can use classic BIOS mode as well (CHS-mode for the disks). It's less tricky.
Then install normally.
Do you have any special graphics processor on board? Intel chips work well, but be careful if there is a NVIDIA or AMD GPU.
Good luck.
removed all secure boot, tpm and other security settings
no success, same lock
graphic card is
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics (rev 02)
I read around sometime HP laptops can have this issue
but i can't figure out how to detect what's wrong
no idea?
hi all
I'm installing hp elitebook 840 with a fresh downloaded devuan iso but, on boot, system freeze with a blank screen and the cursor is blinking in the top left corner of the screen.
Installed:
- KDE
- server ssh
Any advice is welcome
thanks in advance

Hi all
I wonder if it is expected to release an official devuan docker image.
