Amazing how the hyperbole develops about a person/company you know nothing about.
None of your conjectures about me or my skills are even remotely true.

But, keep it coming it is amusing as heck.
This one made us roll with laughter.

All very amusing thanks.
I have been booting Unix since the eighties, so I see a problem with a usergroup when I run across them.
This is surely one.

Cheers kids.

No problem.
Good riddance.

Once you kids grow up, remember to make an effort to man up and actually answer the OP questions

Bye.

Hello:

I have followed this thread on and off, more than anything out of curiosity and to see just how far it would go.

Well.. just answering my questions directly would avoid all this.
Apparently you are more interested in observing the fight than just to answer the 2 questions I posted.

This shows the petty corrupt attitude of the Devuan UG management and it's followers.

No interest to even consider the blazing username capitalization discrepancy between two iso versions.

I am out of here. No reason to entertain a bunch of wannabe Sages who refuse to directly answer questions. See for example the first response to my original post and ask yourself if that is the way to treat a user. ?

Read the answers from GlenW.
Learn from him how to try and solve a problem constructively

I will use alternative non-systemD distros. I'm done with Devuan

Good day, and I sincerely hope the corruption will be sorted out.

#5 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-19 03:58:59

With all due respect.
You dont seem to want to answer constructively.
Everything has to be dragged out of you.
Just babble, looking for righteous argument.

First of all, the Devuan iso is called
devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop.iso

So there, it clearly says DESKTOP version. can you read?

Fine I assume then from your answer that there is no user-manager gui installed at all and will not be.
It seems to be very difficult for you to state that fact as you prefer to be  vague for posts on end.

That is ok, I will just install one from debian.

Secondly. The stupidity between the live version and the direct install versions as they are packaged is obvious.
One allows upper case and the other only allows lower case usernames.

I will be blunt, the same way as you have been of the bat.

You clearly have no clue about the workings of Devuan or the packaging anomalies.
If you are the packager, it would explain absolutely everything.

Cheers, no need to try and converse with you.
A random mole on my lawn would be easier to get a straight answer from.

You claim there is ... please provide program name and directory
2) Why does the Live version allow capitalized user names but the Desktop version only allows lowercase.

Hi Glenn,
AccountsService is a D-Bus service for accessing the list of user accounts and information attached to those accounts, so it wont be a gui for adding and configuring users.
I installed it anyway, but it is clearly not for that purpose.

#8 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-19 01:59:30

ralph,

Of course I did, all you find are the command line userconfigs as i stated and listed them clearly in my previous answer to you and the cli user configs are not what I am after. Maybe read ?

That is

 # ls |grep -i user
adduser
deluser
newusers
useradd
userdel
usermod

That is unless it goes by some other incognito moniker ?
I am out of guesses. maybe it lurks in /dev/null  ?? I wont be surprised.
You make a lot of counter claims but never backed up by data.

So again,
But, to find what exactly in /usr/sbin?
And, even more importantly why is there no user config gui application in the menu system for a Desktop Install ?

#9 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-18 23:25:28

Thanks GlennW
the point is, this is a desktop version not a server distro that is installed therefore it must definately have a user-manager gui program. A desktop user is generally not supposed to do server work.
If it was the server version then you would use

adduser deluser newusers useradd userdel usermod

to configure users.
I want to use the desktop version as the user-manager apps have great permission templates that takes forever to set up by hand. Usually there are over 20 permissions all different for specific user accounts and is a pain to set up by hand using adduser deluser newusers useradd userdel usermod addgroup etc.

Furthermore

apt install user-manager

is NOT in the repository.
in fact

apt install *user*

Yields absolutely no configuration program in the entire Devuan repository.
I will have to install from outside the Devuan Dstro repositories, which is really an odd requirement for something this crucial.

I added that to my previous post before seeing your post.

#10 Re: Installation » Devuan: Existential issues. » 2022-11-18 22:50:04

And exactly where are they and what are they called. ?

Rather be specific than add more clouds.

There is NO User-manager program in the menu at all..... so I must guess right ??

Could not find it in MENU from desktop
NOT in /usr/local/bin
NOT in /usr/bin
NOT in /sbin
NOT in /bin

Path says all that is left is "games" that I did not try
bash: /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games:

or does it go by somer other program name than *user* ?

This is the desktop version not the server version install.
For a desktop distro I would expect a user-config program rather than to revert to the server, adduser deluser newusers useradd userdel usermod  secfacta.

DEVUAN VERSION
chimaera
SYSTEM:
Linux version 5.10.0-19-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-10 (Debian 10.2.1-6) 10.2.1 20210110, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.35.2) #1 SMP Debian 5.10.149-2 (2022-10-21)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Trying Devuan again after about 4 years, and it is definitely an improvement.
Two years ago it was really problematic and i moved to MX on my servers as MX at least still boots sysV, but unfortunately still has systemD for other tasks than booting.
As it is time to upgrade my rackservers which still runs systemDUH, systemD bugs  makes Devuan or equiv non systemD distros priority.
The amount of garbage that the ever encroaching systemD introduces are just mind boggling.
I need to permanently get rid of the nonsense.

However:
I have some problems with "devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop"

1) Installing using the LIVE version "devuan_chimaera_4.0.2_amd64_desktop-live" I can create capitalized user names great !!
However installing "devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop" , suddenly ONLY lower case usernames are allowed. This makes it incompatible with my existing filesystems and useraccounts and loads of scripts. This is not acceptable.
So why the difference between the two versions of install media with one allowing uppercase usernames and the other not ?? Seems odd and inconsistent.
MX as an example switched hard back to allowing uppercase usernames as they realize restricting to lowercase chase away server based users.
Fine i can do the useradd and configure the files to allow uppercase, but the user-config interfaces makes permissions and templates and such really transparent and I prefer that.

2) Trying to create new users in the  "devuan_chimaera_4.0.0_amd64_desktop" installation yields the alarming state that; There is no "user-config" program available to add and alter users.

Unless it is hidden in some ungodly place that I could not find ok, but ls |grepping the /usr/bin for "user" gives me no executables.

What on earth ?   ... and why was it left out of the install. This is a serious oversight unless  I miss something.

Devuan is critical important to Linux and I support you 100% in light of systemDUH, but sheesh, !!!!  The two basic incidents above scares away any person managing rackservers.

or ... did I overlook something and my criticism is unfounded?

I have way more anomalies I can list, but let's address the two I listed above first. Maybe there is a good explanation for this, as i didnt use Devuan since 2019.

#12 Re: Other Issues » Devuan just froze up on reboot. » 2020-07-18 01:17:13

I believe you, it is just that I can starkly remember the exact same problem back in 2005, with several distros and then never again thereafter. it is just very odd that I get exactly the same problem 15 years later.
Its no sweat. i will reinstall if i cannot remotely install the supposedly missing libraries. Usually I can taking me a few minutes.

#13 Re: Other Issues » Devuan just froze up on reboot. » 2020-07-17 02:21:14

I will try and use that solution. My network cable was plugged in and networking works.

If this is the problem as what you linked to, then Devuan is at fault.
That would be an absurd condition halting the boot process just because the os is unhappy about the network status.
This seems to be the case in the thread you posted.

#14 Re: Other Issues » Devuan just froze up on reboot. » 2020-07-16 19:35:56

Here I posted a Tutorial about how to do remote installs on Distros which are not active. Result is the same as doing dpkg on a running system. Saved my bacon a lot of times having to fix a terminally corrupt library on a non-running partition remotely.
In the case showcased there, libc6 has config problem which completely bricks all terminal commands. You cannot fix the system while the OS is running as terminal commands result in a segfault - nasty!  Usually everyone just reinstalls. This way you just reinstalls libc6 while the system is not running remotely from another distro and the system runs again after reboot. Dont know why nobody seems to know about this.

"https://www.nixcraft.com/t/damaged-libc … cover/2934"

i can do exactly the same on Devuan if I know which libraries are missing and what provides it. So I will have to go dig into that. In this case the remote install on a passive OS is the only way to fix it as it wont boot into administrator mode either.

To your other comment, sure things dont just happen by themselves, that is why I ask if it is a known flaw.

#15 Re: Other Issues » Devuan just froze up on reboot. » 2020-07-15 21:05:13

There were no updates done at all. This is running as a terminal for ssh business client software, so no need for upgrades.
Very strange.
I put the disk in another exact terminal, booted up and have the same problem, so either something went corrupt or there is self destruct.
These terminals are not upgraded except at installation.
I will do a remote dpkg install of the package containing the libraries not found and see.

Just froze up, boots until ifup then hangs in an endless loop.
Nothing was installed, nothing up-graded.
System was working perfectly until reboot.

Anything known that can cause this issue that I can fix to prevent reinstallation ?

Here is an image of the freezeup.

#17 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » Android and IOS » 2020-04-26 00:13:03

Thank you fsmithred, I think you hit the nail on the head.

I clearly have broken packages I was unaware of.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gvfs-backends : Depends: gvfs (= 1.30.4-1) but it is not going to be installed
                 Depends: gvfs-daemons (= 1.30.4-1)
Depends: gvfs-libs (= 1.30.4-1) but 1.30.4-2 is to be installed
Depends: gvfs-common (= 1.30.4-1) but 1.30.4-2 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Therefore my question is basically answered as I have to fix the above first after which it should work.

DZZ,

Is automounting these devices supported in Devuan or does it have to be done manually with jmtpfs and fusermount -u   from command line ?

#20 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan / Video issue » 2019-09-28 05:06:18

That wasnt installed, I addedrepos and installed it, but error remains the same.

In adition I noticed terminal output in vlc says avcoded decode error and in VLC just plays a blank black screen. In firefox it plays audio and shows video, but it drops frames probably due to the avcodec decode error.

Maybe this ? A bug is mentioned. Althouigh it is for windows, the bug would be the same.
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=144998

If this is in fact the problem, then Devuan must be using oooooold package versions.

#21 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan / Video issue » 2019-09-27 03:42:15

Thanks for the response.

apt install libavcodec-extra
did not help.

No stock esr is a bit of a mess generally for me and I try not to use it. I usually just install a latest standard Firefox. That said, I did try it initially with
ESR, the same problem is encountered with newest firefox and ESR.

I also tried playing the video with VLC and got an error as follows
*"5 minutes of delayed video (Slow computer?) "*

Lol !! Slow computer? This is a 24 core 2.4GHz per core rackserver with 32GB memory and an AMD gaming video card that plays Heaven Benchmark smoothly at the maximum of my monitor resolutions.... sheez!
I need the fast video card for Video editing with Blackmagic Davinci etc and Lightworks and it works fantastic on this machine.

The error must in this case seemingly Devuan related, because if I dual boot into MX18, then it plays perfect on the SAME machine both running XFCE
Only difference is the OS.

#22 Re: Devuan » Devuan dual monitor strange problem. » 2019-09-24 07:45:02

Yes, fsck exits with no error.

Here are screenshots showing the absurd behavior.
As you can see out of the box, the directories used for backgrounds are different ... why on earth is it configured this way out of the box ???
Second of all, you cannot change directory to select another directory for change of backgrounds..permission denied.

e.g. I cannot select a background from the directory used in the first monitor permission denied all is grayed out.

To make this even weirder, If I move the config screen as
I posted for Screen1 over to screen 2 by dragging it with the mouse, then the backgrounds are immediately switched to a different directory as can be seen in the image labled monitor w. So the same config window changes from the first image to the second images dragging it to the second monitor.

Furthermore you cannot change directory to get both working from the same directory

This is *utterly* absurd.

Monitor2

I am sure this is rather an XFCE question in hindsight and not really anything to do with Devuan, although someone here must have run into the same trouble.

I have a problem with firefox on Devuan which seems to be devuan only at this stage.

I tested this on a machine where I can dual boot Devuan and MX18 on the same hardware.

I have the same version of firefox installed on both. 69.0

When I play an mp4 video in firefox originating from an email, both plays it natively in firefox and not with an external app like VLC.

On MX18, the video plays smoothly.
On Devuan it stutters and freezes, seemingly dropping massive amounts of frames.

Any idea where I can start troubleshooting this to get
Devuan/firefox to p[lay videos properly.?

#24 Re: Devuan » Devuan dual monitor strange problem. » 2019-09-18 00:50:56

Nope, CLEAN install downloaded from Devuan

All I did extra after install is
apt update
apt upgrade

Thats all.

I am not at that terminal right now when I get there I will post all the details.
I will see if I can make a video, it is really curious to see ..

#25 Re: Devuan » Devuan dual monitor strange problem. » 2019-09-17 23:56:42

Lol of course I know what xfce is.....please dont do the sprinkly childish thing to me, I am trying to be nice, but that tests me.

Anyway, the strange thing is that /usr/share is readable if I am on the default monitor.
If I moved the config over to the second monitor, the backgrounds are not available anymore and /usr/share suddenly becomes protected.

I have never seen anything like this, and dont have a clue why there is separate permissions for separate monitors.

As to your recommendation, I cannot access any directories in /usr/share from second monitor.

It clearly looks to me like a new Xorg feature that went haywire.
