Why would you think they would be?  It is a _very bad idea_ to use Debian-related packages from other sources on Devuan.

Not *everyone* is as up on Ubuntu/Debian differences. Since Ubuntu is forked from Debian as is Devuan, its an easy to assume idea.. No need to be snippy about my lack of knowledge...

#2 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Can someone explain... » 2019-01-03 16:25:12

Looks like I have to build it on Devuan also.. The debs I built on Ubuntu 18.04 are not happy on Devuan. Thanks again!!

#3 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Can someone explain... » 2019-01-03 03:24:51

Thank you! Thank you!! Made me feel like I'm back on Gentoo, with the "build your own software" ... But your instructions were very clear and
got the job done... Gonna copy those debs off where they'll get backed up for future use. Since the Devuan system was just a small laptop,
I built the client on my big machine running Ubuntu 18.04 and the client installed fine on Ubuntu, will make sure it works on Devuan as soon as
possible... Thanks again!!

I had occasion on another machine, which was was running Ubuntu 18.04, to attempt to install the Owncloud client on that system. The download for Ubuntu
18.04 turned out to be the same one as for Debian 9. Trying to install on Ubuntu gave me the missing files as Devuan... Will try the self-build...

Thanks

I am trying to install a client (Owncloud-client), the package I'm using says it is for Debian 9, and to my understanding, Devuan-Ascii is a fork of
Debian 9. I use Devuan as I don't care for systemd. I dealt with this question a while back, when I was told the Devuan repos contained owncloud-client. That version worked just fine until I upgraded the Owncloud server backend, and now the 2.2.4 version of owncloud-client, in the Devuan repo, does NOT work with the upgraded server. When I attempt to install the 2.5.1 client, the one required for the upgraded server, I get the following from dpkg..

owncloud-client:amd64 depends on libowncloudsync0 (= 2.5.1.10973+oc-10450); however:
  Package libowncloudsync0 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5concurrent5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5concurrent5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5core5a; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5core5a is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5dbus5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5dbus5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5gui5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5gui5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5keychain1; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5keychain1 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5network5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5network5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5webkit5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5webkit5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5widgets5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5widgets5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5xml5; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5xml5 is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on owncloud-client-l10n; however:
  Package owncloud-client-l10n is not installed.
 owncloud-client:amd64 depends on ocqt5101-libqt5sql5-sqlite; however:
  Package ocqt5101-libqt5sql5-sqlite is not installed.

I went thru and verified that each and every one of the libqt5* files exist on the system doing the install. What is totally unclear is
WHAT the "ocqt5101-" header on these lib file is. Would it be something stupid like needing symlinks from the ocqt5101-x" to the
actual library file? I posted on the Owncloud forum and they suggested posting on this forum. I'm between a rock and a hard place

Thanks
Dave

As you stated, its an easier method for you, there are other methods.  What is the program anyway?

For starters, Spotify.. However, once I read here that snap on devuan was a no-go, I found that using the Clementine music program fixed that need.. Since my
usage of Devuan is a desktop/laptop replacement for Windows, that for now, that resolves my snapd "requirement"... As long as there are alternatives to distros that are infested with systemd, such as Devuan (and others), I'll be a happy camper..

Thanks

I was thinking the same exact thing.

@lvdave . . . If you want that feature, use a systemd-based OS.   It's that simple.

No, it is NOT "that simple".. The two systems I'm evaluating Devuan to replace the current Ubuntu 14.04, when it goes EOL in April '19 have
been tested with Debian Stretch, Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04, which all use the abortion (IMO) that is systemd. Under ALL of these OS, shutdown takes over a
minute from telling the OS to shutdown to the system powering off. Checking why this is, I find there are several "stop jobs" running that are preventing the
laptop (a Dell Latitude i5 with 8gb of ram) from shutting down in a timely manner. Whereas, with the same system running either Ubuntu 14.04 OR Devuan Ascii, the laptop shuts down in less than 10 seconds. Since I do not use hibernation, I often shutdown this laptop many times/day. The desktop in question does not have this problem as its rarely ever shutdown, only rebooted when needed. I've used/supported Linux (and Windows) for 20 years as a sysadmin (now retired) and let me put it succinctly.. I DO NOT CARE FOR SYSTEMD.. period.. Which is why I'm evaluating Devuan, like the folks who started the Devuan project, I don't care to use systemd... You may like it, but I DON'T.... Since I really like Devuan (am currently running it on the laptop I'm typing this on), I'll look for an alternative way to run the programs I need withOUT snapd, such as flatpak or appimages..

Several apps I need are more easily installed/used as a snap.

Thats just lovely NOT!!... Am evaluating Devuan to move to when my current Ubuntu 14.04 becomes EOL next April and having the ability to run snaps is
a dealbreaker. Thanks for the info...

Subject says it all... I'm running Devuan Ascii and understand it is a fork of Debian Stretch. I need to run snaps on this system, and I find that the Debian Stretch repo contains the snapd package to allow running of snap packages. Trying an "apt install snapd", as shown for a Debian Stretch install, does NOT
work on Devuan Ascii, getting an "E: Unable to locate package snapd"... What gives?

Thanks

I was under the impression that Devuan/Ascii WAS Debian/9/Stretch MINUS systemd. I've installed this client on an actual Debian 9 system and it
installs perfectly... These appear to be qt5-related libs, which is kinda weird, as I chose the KDE/Plasma5 DE choice when installing Devuan. These
libs *should* already be there. After these errors, if I do an "apt-get -f install", which generally fixes dpkg dependancy problems, it offers to remove "owncloud-client"....

Help!

I'm considering moving from Ubuntu 14.04 to Devuan for reasons.. I maintain several Windows servers and use the gtk-based Remmina client to connect via rdp to these servers on my current Ubuntu 14.04/KDE4 system. I just installed Devuan Ascii w/ KDE, and while setting up the system I discovered, apparently, the Remmina program is not in the Devuan repo. Since I use Remmina a LOT I'd really hate to wind up having to use something else for rdp. Any ideas??

Thanks
Dave
