Thanks! I will do that.
When the installer asks if i created a partition for my Home folders, is it going to format that partition or will it simply mount the partition to /home ?
I have a LUKS encrypted partition that already has the home directories on it. So before starting the refractainstaller i could use
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb4 cryptHome
and then tell refractainstaller that the home partition is at
/dev/mapper/cryptHome
.
Obviously i dont want it to wipe out my existing stuff.

vulnerability CVE-2019-11708 has been fixed in
60.7.1esr-1~deb9u1 on the Debian stretch repo
how long does it usually take for the same security patch to get into the Devuan ascii repo?
it is currently at 60.7.0esr-1~deb9u1
i just did the clearing commands too and am getting those errors, see below.
is it safe to do upgrades?
is the repository out of sync or hacked?

update: waiting a week seems to have fixed this.
I followed instructions at https://devuan.org/os/documentation/dev … e-to-ascii including manual network configuration.
1st reboot was fine. then after last step on the instructions and 2nd reboot, i could not login to the remote machine.
when i reviewed the session i noticed that the following were running just before i rebooted:
389 ? Ss 0:00 /lib/systemd/systemd-udevd --daemon
1804 ? S 0:00 /lib/systemd/systemd-logind
i also noticed that libpam-systemd had (of course) been removed by apt-get but didnt think to check what it had been replaced with.
it seems too late to fix, so i will have to ask the remote colo provider to reinstall a fresh copy of debian 9. in case i decide to try migrating again, would you folks have any hints what i should look for, just prior to the 2nd reboot, to ensure the system will be accessible afterwards?
[update]
when i got the freshly installed machine the ethernet interface was named "eno1" for some reason and i left it as is. the migration may have automatically renamed it somewhere to eth0 (perhaps in the udev rules?), but not in /etc/network/interfaces . also something was different about the sshd setup. the colo providers fixed the issue and i am back up and running!
I used the suggested command several times (i guess it only finds a few deps each time) and was able to remove stuff until it returned this:
$ aptitude why libsystemd0
i xserver-xorg-video-radeon Depends xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.18.99.901)
iBA xserver-xorg-core Depends libsystemd0
Are the xorg libs really dependent on systemd?
i tried the upgrade instructions and it got an error and wont go any further. currently not sure whether it is safe to reboot or i can do something to get it moving again. transcript of apt-get dist-upgrade is at
https://pastebin.com/jaZb27ap
where is the place to "open an issue"?
thanks!
i will change the topic title to ffmpeg
i want to install ffmpeg, which doesnt show up in a search in synaptic or aptitude.
i tried to add the repository to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/devuan.list as
deb https://git.devuan.org/devuan-packages/ jessie main
but it gets an error with https not supported
so then i installed apt-transport-https
but after that i get a GPG error:
E: GPG error: https://git.devuan.org jessie InRelease: Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NODATA' (does the network require authentication?)
how do i get the repo keys or where is the correct repo?
