Memory: 1338MiB / 7362MiBThe printer is a LCD colour laser printer/scanner/copier that uses toner cartridges. It was bought via Amazon on 1 July 2019 & has worked flawlessly under Devuan using standard CUPS drivers ever since.
Very recently it reported "Toner Low for Y + M (yellow + magenta catridges; there are 4: CYMK [Cyan | Yellow | Magenta | Black]). This was the first ever change with the exception of changing the black catridge.
After the replacing the Y+M with non-Brother catridges it appeared to restart OK but still refused to print. lpstat -p reported "unplugged or turned off".
I then had a 4-day hair-pulling horror, which included struggling with a Brother online AI which lied to me by saying that it would connect me with a human, but did not do so.
I got a hint whilst searching that the printer needed to be rebooted.
In the end, I rebooted computer + printer both at the same time (remove the power socket from the printer & reconnect only when the computer booted up). Before the desktop came up I heard the printer print my Virgin statement. It worked! Afterwards:

I finally did this today.
My reason for moving to VM was that they paid interest on +ve account balances. Not much, but I was informed that they paid interest on the full balance. Last Wednesday my 1st paper statement arrived and I discovered for the first time that they only paid interest on £1,000 of the balance in the current a/c (this is 101 in winding your customers up).
I phoned up & spoke to Alan (very helpful, although his scottish accent was difficult for me). He said I need to move the excess money into a Saver account to get interest on it.
After Marjorie's message I wanted to discover how to organise online banking. Alan took me through setting it up under Chromium (FireFox is verboten). Reasonably easy, and the mobile is used to obtain a 4-digit code to enter to confirm status (standard practice now, even if Whitehall is trying to kill it).
I would still prefer a dedicated desktop app, which should afford better security.
NatWest were introducing apps for mobile phones when I moved my accounts to VM. My current service with VM is essentially identical to what I had with NatWest except that VM pay interest on +ve bank balances and Cash ISA (NatWest pay 0% on both). And the VM debit card is prettier (bright red) than the NatWest one.
My desire was simply to be able to do basic admin on my accounts from my desktop. I'm happy with a mobile to phone, take pictures & videos + text messages. But I will not add money to it.
What pleases me with Linux is the dedication to security, shown by the virtually daily updates plus the attitude of the opensource movement. That means that Devuan is a system that people can trust.
A mobile phone OS is a means to line the pockets of the proprietors that own it, and users are just their glove-puppets. Thus, I treat mobiles as something that I value but use at the end of a barge-pole supplemented with a clothes-peg (for my nose).
My actions with VM were gesture politics more than anything else. I did not expect much more than what happened, but if you do not try then nothing will change.
It has been very interesting to read folk's responses, and I thank you for that. Just maybe someone will waft these messages under the eyes of a VM executive that can make a difference and cause a desktop app to be written. It would be trivially easy to implement cp to a mobile app, and a damn sight more secure.
I was under zero illusions. If I don't ask I don't get.
I'll take your advice under advisement, Ron, until I receive further confirmation.
NatWest was the first bank I met (or National Westminster Bank, as it was then in 1967 when I was 18), and all the banks that I have met then & since have been stupid beyond any reasonable excuse. I left NatWest because they have ceased to pay interest on positive balances. VM *do* pay interest, even if not much.
I recently moved my bank from NatWest to Virgin Money (VM).
VM did their best to persuade me to download & use their mobile app but I refused. I'm an old codger & have lost 2 mobiles in my time. The police now refuse to accept any responsibility for lost items and, since mobile updates are few & far in between, I simply will not trust to store my financial details on a mobile phone.
VM do not have any equivalent of their mobile app for the desktop. I very recently had a bright idea…
I'm fully capable of programming in python. If I could get the VM text code for the mobile app I could (relatively) easily produce a Python program from it, perhaps even using AI in the process to do the bulk of the cross-conversion, and then tidy it all up by hand. VM could then have by return a desktop app that would work under any desktop OS.
I had cause to go into the Nottingham city-centre VM office this morning (Saturday 12 Sep 2026) to pay an invoice, and put the above to the service lady & got a number to contact head office. The response was: absolutely not. And it gets worse.
During the phone conversation with VM HQ it seemed from their responses that the reason for the refusal was that VM were placing company "secrets" into the text code. I have zero idea as to what those precisely were, but got the firm impression that they did not want me to see them. Jehoshaphat! but I hope that I am wrong in that, as they could easily be extracted from the app code.
Anyway, it seems that I can still not use Devuan to administer my bank account from my desktop, and nor will that change anyday soon.
Update to Chromium finally arrived.
Indeed it has, and it works. This post is written under Chromium (hurrah!):

After much useless DDG searching I tried to follow some advice to remove the keyring at ~/.local/share/keyrings using rm -v ~/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring.
The previous step on Chromium restart now saw a much fuller restart, with a Chromium 'New tab' and a "Restore pages" dialog + "Choose password for new keyring" dialog. The entire desktop was frozen with the sole exception of the Chromium dialogs.
Entering my system-user password, then confirming it + pressing the 'Continue' button then shutdown that entire window but released all other windows.
The keyring dir now looked like this (I do not recall the 'default' nor the 'Default_Keyring.keyring' entries being present before):
$ la ~/.local/share/keyrings

I assume that I will have to wait for yet another Chromium update.
My description of Gnome as "bloated" appears to have triggered some folks. I do not have a dog in that fight, although I *have* sometimes been surprised at the number of dependencies that will get pulled in if I install something connected to Gnome.
To try to shed some light on this I searched DDG for Is Gnome bloated. The answer appears to be 'yes':
Search Assist
Yes, GNOME is often considered bloated, as it includes a large number of applications and features that some users find unnecessary, leading to performance issues and a cluttered experience.

Memory: 1556MiB / 7362MiBSomewhere after a successful upgrade to Excalibur and (I think) a kernel update I discovered that, whilst my 2GB USB-Storage was automounted + auto-accessible via Thunar & could be unmounted via GUI, the same was NO LONGER true for CDROM / DVD / Blue-Ray external devices connected to the desktop via USB. iirc the same was true for a Seagate 2TB external FAT32 usb-connected HDD (I may not have checked that one before the fix).
I'm in the middle of preparing for imminent upgrade to kitchen + house & my time is limited, but I checked the Byte Computer that I've been upgrading since January — it needs Chromium + Thunderbird sync and we shall have lift-off — and sure enough that shows the identical problem as the 10-year old Lenovo that I'm working on right now.
After a couple of days of going down rabbit holes on the Byte I transferred back to the Lenovo and hey!, after yet another trip down a rabbit-hole I got a conclusive fix. So here it is:-
Login for me is SLIM, Desktop is xfce4 whilst the File Manager is Thunar. The important thing to realise is that Automount for removable Drives, Devices & Media in that combo is mediated via Thunar and NOT via /etc/fstab, autofs nor any other source. As long as Thunar and it's dependencies are setup correctly life is simple & it just works.
With Thunar open, go:–
menu:Edit | Preferences
select tab:Advanced
(bottom of tab): Volume Management
[if working, this provides a "Configure" link to the “Removable Drives and Media” setup]
That is the case for me now, but before the fix there was a sickly-coloured background which said:
'gvfs is not available' + a 'Read More' link:
https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/thunar/unix- … ile_system
which says: "For Debian and its derivatives, the packages “gvfs-backends” and “gvfs-fuse” are required"
That is more than a little sickly for folks like me that tend to stay away from bloated products like gvfs (wiki) virtual filesystem software for the GNOME desktop environment
Here is a before result on a search, with the fix after:

The problems starts when some AMDs are in use on Linux.
As stated above: my old box was AMD64 (a processor actually made by AMD) and was first booted in May 2016 into Devuan. No problems of any kind then nor ever since. What on earth are you talking about? AMD v's intel is a non-starter here, so I'm marking this SOLVED.
I used devuan_excalibur_6.1.0_amd64_netinstall.iso obtained from the devuan excaliber download page. Then dd to setup a 2GB USB stick (wildly oversized; the iso is only 593MB).
sudo dd if=devuan_excalibur_6.1.0_amd64_netinstall.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=1M && syncMy existing screen has a HDMI option, so that was plugged into the Byte, as were an aged Dell keyboard via USB, mouse via USB, a LAN connection to my Virgin Media cable box, the external 18v power via DC jack + the USB stick.
Setup was a doddle:
The first issue was to spot the console warning to access the BIOS at startup. It was "F2", but that was on-screen for a very brief time.
Inside the BIOS it was easy to spot 'choose boot disk', with the internal 2TB SSD or the USB as options after that choice. Choosing 'USB' and 'reboot', everything occurred at astonishing speed afterwards.
My existing box is 10 years old, and one of the main reasons for getting a replacement is the gigabit LAN in the new one. Virgin have upgraded their Cable to an astonishing speed, but the old box was 10/100 LAN & that was the max it could handle. The new box is tiny outside but has 10 x the speed & capacity of the old one.
I was impressed by the intelligence of the setup in the ISO. It spotted my GB location & all the options for LAN setup (lan, wlan + bluetooth). The defaults for disk setup were also intelligent.
Finally, if you have not yet spotted it, only the intelligence of me & the Devuan page is lacking. I'm an ex-internet professional + server admin and yet was flummoxed by "amd64" as the supported architecture.
The Star-Labs Byte3 is working fine with Devuan. My main problem now is the amount of time that it is going to take me to set it up to my liking, so that I can drag myself away from the old box.
Oh good lord! Thank you for a fast reply.
I have a horrible feeling that the answer will be "No".
I've been running Excalibur on my old machine without problems since it was released.
I've bought a Byte computer from Star-Labs:
https://starlabs.systems/pages/byte-specification
It arrived today & I was going to burn an ISO to a USB & install from there. Then I read the Install-Guide on devuan.org:
https://www.devuan.org/os/documentation … evuan.html
...and saw the dreaded statement:
Supported architectures
amd64
The Byte machine is an Intel Twin Lake N355. Is there no chance under intel? I truly do not want to submit to the systemD plague by reverting to Debian.
Oh bugger. My bad. It never occurred to me when I placed the order.
This is sources.list within the Upgrade to Excalibur page (devuan.org):
"Modify sources.list to look like the one provided. Comment out all other lines."
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged excalibur main deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged excalibur-updates main deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged excalibur-security main #deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged excalibur-backports main
Then, just to confuse you (Devuan is good at shooting itself & you in the foot), the page says:
Just add the non-free-firmware, non-free and contrib components to the appropriate line(s) in /etc/apt/sources.list as required:
deb http://deb.devuan.org/merged excalibur main non-free-firmware non-free contrib
It is the last line above that you need within sources.list, with duplicate lines added for excalibur, excalibur-updates, excalibur-security + excalibur-backports as required. I would suggest the 1st 3 initially, and all 4 if you are comfortable adding backports.
[added later]:
Here is my sources.list for Excaliber:

Just like slugs, Bugs leave sure-fire notice of their existence.
On document load the page count (Status Bar at bottom left) would vary wildly from moment-to-moment
The DrawObjects would move location, often across pages as well as within them, and that could also be within the page header or footer. From observation I believe that it may be this latter that caused the freeze-ups.
(added 20 Nov) Images + Tables would also move location through the text from their original place.
(added 20 Nov) In the Navigator (F5) Tables, Images, DrawObjects, etc.would be listed out-of-order from their position in the text-flow
Under 7.4.7.2 it currently takes 14 seconds after document load for the system load to fall from 30% to a trivial level. Before the changes above it *never* fell below 30%.
(added 20 Nov): After vast amounts of work to create "Proper" styling, a freshly-loaded document takes 10 seconds before the load falls below 30% (an extra 4 seconds saved on earlier work)
4_paragraph-fix.odt was a dead end. So I began again with 1_Programming-In-Python3.odt:
Opened 1_Programming-In-Python3.odt in AppImage 7.2.3.2
(normal load, NOT 30%)
Used existing lines in Title page (currently styled as Direct Paragraph) to create styles Subtitle 1, (2, 3)
(using f11 | Styles actions | New Style from Selection); thus no line on Title page now has Direct formatting
Shift+Ctrl+S (save-as) to 2_paragraph-fixes.odt
Changed Text Body style to "Below paragraph: 0.50 cm" + single line spacing
(this matches the original pdf closely)
Changed default list + indent to Text Body Indent
My intention at this stage was to discover what it was that was freezing LO solid (and once froze the entire system solid). I *did* find it (a bug in 7.2.3.2, so not the original issue). First, a quick word about 'Direct Paragraph' style + Text-Boxes (TB) in H1, 2, 3 & 4 paragraphs:
The Direct Paragraph Style is the base style for all other paragraph styles. Thus, modifying that Style will affect every other paragraph in the entire document, which may (or may not) be what you want. I was also informed that using it directly as a Style throughout a document increases the processing load due to lack of caching.
Each Heading in the pdf contains a stylistic |||| for H1 headers, ||| for H2 headers, and so on. I used a TB to create these. I was advised to use a Frame instead. So what's the issue here?
TB can NOT be assigned a Style, whereas Frames CAN be assigned a Style. We are going to discover a very weird bug with these TB when we reach H2 edits. Frames also have a bad bug associated with them, but that is for later.
The next stage in these edits is to swap out each header TB for a Frame:
Each H1 TB was swapped out for a Frame
(no problems)
Each H2 TB was swapped out for a Frame
(I did it Chapter-by-Chapter; no problems until I reached Chapter 15)
The "Dialog-Style Programs" (p568) + "Main-Window-Style Programs" (p574) (ODT, not PDF) each have a TB that has a daeafb Colour applied to the Area (I do not recall applying them)
Changing the TB Area from Colour to None then showed the following option within menu:Edit: "Undo: Sort Shapes"
Attempting to Save the change produced the following Error (below), which then prevented any attempt to save the document
The identical change to the identical document under 7.4.7.2 showed zero problems
Write Error
Error in writing sub-document content.xml
Wot a blooming nightmare.
The changes made to this point DID allow 'normal' 7.4.7.2 to open document with ordinary load after some short moments processing. Battered & bruised I continue.
There is one main route that requires a reboot, and that is following install of a new kernel. The kernel will need installing at bootup (the only time it gets installed) and the process to that requires an initramfs, which makes a setup from RAM & at the end loads the kernel, etc., etc. initramfs is always specific to a specific kernel.
Here is some user-level info on the setup device:
dpkg -l initramfs-toolss
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-===============-=============-============-================================>
ii initramfs-tools 0.142+deb12u1 all generic modular initramfs generaI assume that a bug-report here needs to be to Debian. I could not find an easy way to do that (they use an auto-report which expects you to be using Debian). Any advice?
This sorry tale continues.
To re-iterate: somewhere within a 600 page Writer ODT is *something* that has triggered a weird bug.
A long-time expert on the ask.libreoffice.org website fingered my use of "Default Paragraph Style" as one source for system slowdown (should be "Text Body" / "Body Text" instead). I set out to change every one of the thousands of 'ordinary' (not indented, or list, etc) Default-paragraphs to Text Body-paragraphs. Having got almost halfway through those manual changes, I have:
Discovered that LO-7.6.7.2 allowed access to edit + save the odt, although the system was at 30% load throughout
Changing the 43 paragraphs in the 'Introduction' / save / re-open caused all the excess load to go away
Restarting LibreOffice (after no further changes) the load was back
Reaching page 113 of 599 with edits the excess load goes away again.
Simply restarting LibreOffice (no further changes) and the load is back.
Restarting computer then LibreOffice at page 233, after changing 3 paragraphs LibreOffice freezes & has to be dismissed with prejudice (ps aux | fgrep -i libreoffice then kill -9 4112 4171).
At some page before this LibreOffice froze so hard that the entire computer system also froze; it required Ctrl+Alt+F1 (go to the command-line) | login | startx | restart computer)
I can't take much more of this.
