In my experience with daedalus testing from rc4 netinstall iso, ive had to remove the /boot/grub/splash.png that corresponded with chimaera as i was getting both the chimaera boot splash image from /boot/grub and the sapphire boot splash image from desktop-base when the updates to stable started to come through.

There's a title bar checkbox at the bottom of the customize toolbar screen which toggles the window manager's title bar.

Yes. If gtk3-nocsd is installed, that checkbox has no effect.

If you dont mind gtk3-nocsd installed you can input the below in $HOME/.xsessionrc or /etc/environment and be done with xfwm or whatever window manager titlebar and accept the gtk3 override. Just an option, i use dwm but have experimented with xfce and other window managers in the past.

GTK_CSD=1

As far as im aware veracrypt is not in any of devuan or debians package repositories?
Try using zulucrypt instead, it should mount veracrypt volumes ok.

How is repology fed for your distribution if you dont me me asking? Repology looks like quite a huge undertaking.

#107 Re: Devuan » Why are systemd files present in Devuan? » 2023-08-02 11:01:47

It would seem this repology is not a very good metric to get package information from.

https://repology.org/repository/devuan_unstable
This repository does not provide links to package recipes or sources in a way accessible by Repology. This is critical, because one of the goals of Repology is to make the details of how a project is packaged visible to anyone. It makes Repology maintenance harder as it's not possible to easily check where a specific version comes from; it does not allow upstream to check the recipe and improve their software to simplify packaging, or suggest corrections to the maintainer; it does not allow other maintainers to learn new ideas. It may be as well dangerous to users due to lack of transparency. Because of that, this repository is subject to removal in the near future.

See documentation for a best way to make package metadata available for Repology.

Thought i should post this in the interest of security.

An issue in “Zen 2” CPUs, under specific microarchitectural circumstances, may allow an attacker to potentially access sensitive information.

^ too true, maybe he had enough on his plate at the time and taking on phone OS and PC OS was a daunting task. The two have definitely not melded very well imo. In a round about way maybe he was saying mobile OS is not worth caring about, dont invest your life in them as so many people now do?

I watched the whole thing a couple of days ago. While I agreed with Ian (RIP) on most issues, the part where I found myself shaking my head in utter disbelief was when he was talking about phones, specifically that he didn't care much about the OS running on his phone.

In the age of IoT ("Internet of Things"), I think we can all agree that you most definitely should be caring about the OS and services powering your phone or even your toaster (unless it's running NetBSD). The great irony is that some of the greatest spying tools ever devised by mankind are based on free and open source software.

Im not sure what to make of his statements on phone operating systems, but 2006-7 was a different time regarding phones and phone operating systems, the only reason i could see him making those remarks as he didn't foresee apple's complete dominance and creation of the smart phone to begin with and then androids entry into the market. Like me he probably saw a phone as something to make calls and send sms and do rudimentary tasks at the time. It would be interesting if there was a follow up in later years from Ian regarding phone operating systems before his demise.

If you want a completely square Firefox browser theme, try this one. It removes every single rounded corner from Firefox.

https://github.com/leadweedy/Firefox-Proton-Square

I dislike the rounded corner hype GUI programming seems to be going these days, screens have always been mostly square by nature of there engineering and putting rounded corners in seems like an unneeded aesthetic in my opinion.

It kind of reminds me of a safety aspect in that they want to make GUI safe by taking off the sharp corners! Mostly hypothetical though!

Just thought would post this here as i find it peculiar behavior.

I dont have sudo installed and use doas lately. I found that if I create an alias in .bashrc such as alias sudo="doas" i can get the full functionality of sudo bash completion as long as i keep using the sudo command in the terminal. Its good i like it but it begs the question can doas be implemented in bash-completion as well?

Workaround is this semi solution.

as root

cp /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/sudo /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/doas

then replace all instance of sudo in the doas file.

Source: https://github.com/scop/bash-completion/issues/505

Edited: Fixed alias command.

Just to let you know.

I know with Firefox you can put this in $HOME/.profile to get it working under wayland. Not sure about the Chromium and Synaptic though.

if [ "$XDG_SESSION_TYPE" = "wayland" ]; then
    export MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1

I absolutely do not mind Debian's move from bash to dash with Squeeze -- I think it was a good change and the gotchas have been worked out of the system.  What surprised me while reviewing Daedalus was that the convenient method of exercising alternatives from one default shell to another was gone.  Apparently it surprised a few people on the Debian forum too.  I like alternatives and believe choice should remain part of the ecosystem.  Removing ease-of-choice is detrimental ... which is kinda why we all meet up here for Devuan.

In my understanding devuan only exists due to choice of init system freedom, so devuan follows as closely as possibly the debian lifecycle while having a choice of 3 inits in the installer and in no way letting systemd as an init be part of the operating system. Choice in shell is of course your choice and as you have found it can be done, but devuan should not be responsible for the decision to make unavailable the method to easily change the default shell with dpkg, that is a debian decision. Just my own opinion here.
To add, devuan does one thing well and that is to make available a debian distribution free from systemd and that is all i want it to do, no more no less.

I believe OP is talking about changing the non-interactive shell, which as ralph mentioned is not a good idea to change.

Beginning with DebianSqueeze, Debian uses Dash as the target of the /bin/sh symlink. Dash lacks many of the features one would expect in an interactive shell, making it faster and more memory efficient than Bash.

From DebianSqueeze to DebianBullseye, it was possible to select bash as the target of the /bin/sh symlink (by running dpkg-reconfigure dash). As of DebianBookworm, this is no longer supported.
