The need of room fluctuate enormous depending of

- the stuff (quantity) you will install
- the method you use to work (you can accumulate a big qty of stuff, but start your linux live after shrinking it extremely in the rapport 3:1 and have a fast system with all, but fixed: you can use but not change it as well as the stuff!)

The average Linux system is today somewhat with a size 10..30 TB only! If you decide 120 TB, you have 90 TB for nothing (*1

(Very interesting is also your USB connection. I have for ex. 4 laptops with i7's (1 with 7 cores and I think only 4 cores in the other ones) but 2 as DELL Aptitude XT3 with «transformer» screenlap (touchscreen). It is not easy to get such a configuation so I have to accept to continue to use old hardware. The USB-connectors are nothing good. I can't use some usb-card with 1..2 TB capacity on then... As I see you have a powerful PC: You have probably ABSOLUTE no change to do excepted perhaps in the BIOS to read as first the USB3.1 or else, and can host your live system directly in your 32 GB RAM if you want!)

(*1 excepted if you need room for ex. to make refractasnapshot: you have to take in consideration the room needing to store the temporary data concerning ALL the content of the partition excepted your "excludes"! See Refracta information!!!

In the last time, I work intensively to repeat the official installation's process from Debian, also used from Devuan, to create starting Refractasnapshots to install really comfortable with Refractainstaller.

The inertia of the official Debian installation way really brings to despair ... Hence the idea that if you would start the Debian installation ISO file from the RAM, it would be much more pleasant as all would be shorter excepted the time you, yourself, need to answer through the keyboard (unfortunately, the Debian installer is too stupid after decades to read the data from a file like a *.cfg file... So sees Debian the future of computer usage!). And Refracta as well as Calamares don't offer a better solution ;-) ...

How to do that if possible?

In the last of the 4 register of "settings" in mousepad, it is possible to activate spell check. And it seems to work! But, sorry only for English US! Is that possible? Those Linux editors are really totally decadent...

(spelling tested outside of luakit in XFCE4-mousepad... I, a man having never learnd English will try to save the spelling of English against some ones as I am!!!)

I did install 32 bit today. A very nice version. I am testing now.

After 1th start, I did purge firefox (not possible, old smudge is in), install luakit (partially recognize as "the" browser now but if I hit on some HTML file opens xfce4 not luakit but abiword! the time has probably a winter time error of 1 hour.

I did install hunspell with hunspell files for en US, de CH and fr REV. I did purge geany as geany is never some help for me, is not part of XFCE4 or else as Puppy Linux etc.: I need definitively an editor with spell help and as hunspell was not pre installed I suppose that geany is wrong... And I suppose, that I will make a lot of spelling errors in this short message...

and I have now aggressive message from battery loading tool! Yes, my PC has very old accus but as accus belong to the most smudge things as will not change it!

The last icone FOR the top bar of XFCE4 seems not to be present (shutdown etc.).

I am not...

The best one for me was Lubuntu minimal old version. I find the actual offer deceiving.

As he has only a few dependencies and does his job well, pcmanfm is a major piece of the desktop environment (but the name, the name of the application! The "man" did really not find somewhat longer?). It's settings are unconfortable...

No one uses the (about)  always available xcalc! Why (nonsens! It works! And good!)?

A lot of editors have no connection to spell / hunspell (same thing with Mozilla browsers...)! Set size and fonts is matter of luck... Hm... And the frequent refuse from mousepad to show the doc because of encoding!

Each will offer a better console. But the best and most small one stay to be sakura, I am sorry for the other...

Nobody uses xedit / Xedview. Is about always preinstalled (through the meta Xorg)!

Nobody continue to know magicpoint. Astonish as this package has a really great past: It was the presentations plateform from early Linux, is really great for documentations as manuals etc. and can handle (like didiwiki, a great smart writing system and personal doc) with pictures! In the 2 FD floppies Linux BASLIN (basic linux, continue to stay today on line) was mgp also the hand drawing app of the microbic distribution!

And, and ...

JWM. JWM can do AL;L what other window manager environment can only do. if you install (a lot) more.

JWM shows HIMSELF (without extra application like xli or feh etc.) show your background picture.

in JWM you can add bars as you want where you want with minimal code extension (not external)

using  «menu» you find automaticly a finished menu under the item «debian menu» in the jwm menu opening on all the surface of the screen (to work fast!). Not all app's in that menu? Yes, because sloopy developpers did abandon the needing code in their new versions (in 2016 did DebianDog 64 have items for ALL pre- or new after main installation coming app's!). But you ca easily add xfce4-appfinder, a modest sacrifice of a few thousand of kB, and you will find under JWM through the JWM menu all app's being in /usr/share/applications correctly!

and you have to get all above automatic services nothing to do as permute your backgrounds line to your wished picture, add one ore more tray definitions with adequate icons relations and add sakura, gedit (deepin did do so...), pcmanfm (so the ugly name will not used any more) and xfce4-appfinder. it is all what is to do!

yes, it is very true.

In the past I did "jump over tasksel" (= unvalide all options) but the way with the justCLI born so is really hart until all works as you want, depending of what you want, of course.

and it is not a good idea to exclude all recommends etc. immediately. justX needs better a good installation for major system inner parts and tools (Xorg, your prefered WM and later your prefered DM, grub in one of your installation starting as the same multiboot, gparted, synaptic if you expect to have full profit of then. Idem refracta tools and dependencies. "nurse" after that your own «justCLI» or «justX Ceres) and remove only after that some permissions! If not, you will create own version being difficult to make complete enough and stable...

I have powerful (enough) PC with i7 etc but I REFUSE to discontinue the solidarity with all modest people and to cut the humanity in poor and arm...

there is NO valid reason to accept it as long such quantities of old computer can help to reduce the gap...

in an analog context I refuse the mozilla's depositories, know well all as the mozilla's came all with adequate links, no trees of links! but those mozilla's refuse to consider the Debian branch of Linux as major branch of Linux populated by an enormous part of those modest peoples I did just name, those modes peoples have frequently a low or no experience with code or LCI! and it was and continue to be the reason why billions of human prefer windows not MS but windows MS-helper, MS-make-it-easy etc.

those, having created, and those maintaining  the depository in *.deb's for ubuntu are real idealists knowing exactly what they do! they consider ubuntu as the most popular linux and it was really that until the two humanity gap's 32 bits as well as systemD, and they have wished that all concerned people not have to go to google software generosity only because they not have the knowledge to install and use the major Linux solutions...

Thunderbird was born as an error! because firefox did be created from commercial guy's having forgotten, that the mozilla suite includes a GOOD email client and although it did offer all that in more, in supplement (email client, irc, kompozer as well as the possibility of an extended instant messaging (yes, I know, Instant bird did never come including in the Mozilla suite, I, as French, suppose, it is because the last great Xul app's and the free book on programming it where very active in France and the German peoples did not like it: Firefox is coupled with the country "Austria" and, years ago, the German developers did have fear that some one will continue to redevelop and recreate a next www browser in the tradition of amaya. browser, that is money, a lot of money, also free browsers...

I agree, start with minimal (netinstall until tasksel > uncomment at the top of tasksel but preserve the foot options > continue the installation)

restart + apt update + install xorg + menu + jwm + refractatools bases + gparted + synaptic (perhaps, if you hate the use of only apt)

restart + make you initial snapshot and nurse it later!

restart + install all the other stuff you want (the actual management of dependencies is good; you can try a "cascade line" of apt with all the rest as you only expect a dektop live!

Either way it takes some time.

you will wonder! with your nursed "initial snapshot" the time consumption is to see as "short"!

Note:

You will spare a lot of time if you don't install some new Grub PC with each installation!!! How to avoid it: really easy! Reinstalling with refractainstaller from the nursed "initial snapshot" and only add the needing lines in /etc/grub.d/40_custom from the unique version of Linux that you install with grub ;-) ... Hi ExposeGlobalistsMadness

Thank you very much for that info.

The problem is my very very old way to work: I use intensively HTML all the time. And I did adopt in the past, probably about 1994 and I know no better system to manage information especially if you use a wysiwyg software! At this time Chinese developpers did offer not a real wysiwyg software but a coupled combination of a very simple minimal internet browser with an editor with special keys for all main HTML codes permitting to work extremely fast without errors as the code came from itself and was extremely compact! And it was possible to commute instantly from browser to editor and back to see! a few time later came the mozilla suite with the real  wysiwyg software as Linux did begin to become a real competitor for Windows95. It was a maximising of work efficiency.
Today, 30 y. later, Linux become a poor system...
No wysiwyg new software, the existing ones (followers from Star Office) produces giant code (for that, we have in Linux the really professional system Latex!!!). MS-Office recognize the language of little parts of texts since 1997 and checks then! No Viavoice in Linux etc.
My purpose is NOT some browser more but complete suites!
In the industry, we did have years along 2 systems: a central and professional system including for drawings and computer aided design, and a local place system for people with only few formation ;-) . Since 2000..2005 began the last one to ween in the favor of clients. So software like photoshop at the one side and autoCAD at the other did begin to become some (very poor and later a bit) standard. And enterprises having big professional systems did have to make face to clients determinated do use only the poor for ex. autoCAD software and did send drawing as contract base made on cheap poor autoCAD software...
Linux did become not the successor of serious UNIX any more but only the competitor in poor from MS-Windows...

And that is the level today.

A lot of base software for this stage comes from Germany (KDE, Star-Office, Sun's java, Suse-Linux, really a Linux used early in the German administration and one of the 2 first Linux distros of the world, etc.), the country were I live and did live all the time.

We don't need more browsers! We need better software, compact, fast, with clear design (would you take a printscreen with gimp? I know how to but it is not for me although gimp one of the best software to process the picture resulting of the printscreen...) and without disturbtion caused by software errors...

ok, I know, dear stopAI, but I did not ask for an indifferent PPA but to show you and other there is a great need and deficit in the scope of packages offered by Devuan ;-) ... For me, free Mozilla represent a great piece of freedom and the answer of the Debian world is very

negative.

You leitmotive is wrong: «Don't break free Mozilla, restore the Seamonkey», the only one wyiswyg Linux HTML editor available from an reputed actual version, one of the great working suite from Linux, a part of real Linux!

#121 Re: Devuan » Why I choose Devuan? nosystemd » 2023-11-13 13:00:27

no question Helen!

Ubuntu, the anti-ecology terror group, which wants to make billions of old PCs junk, with which billions of people from poor countries and areas are still very well learning, working and relaxing, and still do that with 32 bit systems years after the terrible decision from Ubuntu .. Real environmentalists have hatting Ubuntu since then!

Fortunately, several distributions have resisted the temptation and their already made decision to also do this, and still give us 32 bit OS's (I am a user with a powerful 64 bit hardware since ab. 20 years, but out of solidarity with the Poor countries I only use 64 bit systems extremely rarely for special purposes and then only by reading live OS's in the RAM)! Thank you Devuan, Debian, Mint (hm...). emmabuntüs (one of the distro's for poor countries and peoples), etc, etc., and Puppy Linux (also EasyOS: a French idealist did convert it this year in a French version to 32 bit under preserving the concept)!

In my opiinion is Linux ill, very ill: The main IDEA, the reason for the birth of Linux, was to port the winner system UNIX to MODEST USERS and now, as it became a success, Linux managers dare to try to de facto exclude the most modest ones, poor world!

The Linux evolution is pure disaster. Barry Kauler (Puppy Linux) did build a complete little Linux 64 bit environment having a size from under 100 MB (without browser) in one language (English) with all the stuff what an average home user needs (excepted browser! Browser is not recommendable as it is the stuff having the must frequent actualization's needs!). And you need today 100 time more to cover the SAME needs (or perhaps less) with the actual stand of 138 bit, not excuse me, 32 bit Linux (I did go in the wrong think direction!) and about 200 time more in 64 bit for new versions where repetitions follow to other repetition (install for ex. only the minimal graphic envir. into an empty Linux base with only a CLI access and, yes, you get immediately a graphic mode editor (xedit) and graphic mode calculator (xcalc) and a viewer (xditview) being not used or known any more since years by ALL distro builders. it is so. The chaos prevails over the tree directory and hurt the initial very good Unix and early Linux dispositions. 200 tongues or more are included to the system and you will use only 1 UNIQUE tongue with it! Linux is bloated like a bloated stomach...  It is a piety!

It would be an important activity, to clean that terribly old environment. Debian has yet the apex exceeded to do that. Clone Debian without systemD, yes, but don't copy in the illness, the cancer being to eat away Linux...

but depending of the reason why you want STAR, you can relatively very light make yourself somewhat adequate and comparable directly with Devuan regular netinstall ISO (refuse the Devuan desktop + use yourself the tools of STAR as apt configuration + JWM, and, later, as it works correctly, SLIM or lightDM). STAR is somekind of equivalent in 32 bit from CROWZ in 64 bit.

I have and nurse my 4 ISO's

- Devuan justX 32
- Devuan justX 64
- Devuan 32 fat but in justX manner
- Devuan 64 fat but in justX manner

I did announce precedently to offer then at sourceforge but i whas before daedalus was really installed as the new stable... and then, I did upgrade to ceres as ceres and the new experimental were the same at that time. since this time, I have visualizations problems on more than 3 old but powerful PC's probably because of the new kernels and perhaps the astonish but intensive use of kernel links in Devuan Ceres (cursor gets draw permanently in the top corner of the screen).

I can of course offer such ISOs! And I will not come back to the stable version so I wait for new kernels being more friendly...

But,

YOU also can do that for your need yourself! It is absolutely not difficult: You have only to look a bit in the womb of STAR or CROWZ (at /etc/apt/... and at etc other various details depending of your own needs as well as in /usr/share/applications. after that, you know a lot and can start without toil...

Until now, I did never meet some problem ignoring the warning. But as I have problems with about all new kernels from Devuan Ceres and the links of kernel names in Devuan Ceres causing residual smudge after upgrades, I have to consider that somewhat is different in Devuan as in Debian!)

What is the disturbing effect in Ceres after update? The cursor will be permanently draw into the top right corner of the screen so that you can't change your activity with the mouse (but if you have had the chance to open for ex. a text editor etc. you can work within that app so long you don't need the mouse...).
