Grrr...busy day today. Hope to give more information on the new release later. Until then, here's a short video of it if anyone is interested... tongue

I don't think it's available in Jessie yet. It is in Ascii, but I had to do a dist-upgrade to get it...then again, I'm on AMD. tongue

Perhaps this will shed more information?

WOW! Has anyone tried this? I just did! smile

Devuan Jessie + Openbox (64 bit only)

It has GREAT theming and uses Obmenu-Generator too. smile

It booted up at around 165 MBs of RAM in the live session.

It comes set with the German keyboard layout by default. I changed it to the US layout in the live session by opening the terminal and entering...

setxkbmap -layout us

...use your own country's code in the last part of that command. wink

I had to pull up a picture of a German keyboard layout on my phone to see where the "y" and the "-" were located for the command big_smile

GREAT JOB!!!

The latest releases of Miyo-XTRA are now available. smile  Available in 32 bit and 64 bit versions. wink

It's almost midnight here, so I'm about to call it a night; however, I wanted to let folks know that they're available for download. I'll give more information tomorrow. They can be downloaded from here...

Ah...okay. Before I read your reply (fsmithred), I started wondering if it could be done by debootstrap...but I've never done a debootstrap in my life, so I wasn't sure. Thanks fsr.

Yes, there are no official ascii isos yet but fsmithred has a few unofficial isos floating around.  I personally ran into issues with the eth0 device naming thing recently on one of those so will have to redo as an upgrade from jessie.

Perhaps I misunderstood what greenjeans was saying, because I'm unaware of any way to get an ascii installation (for the time being) without changing the sources.

FYI it would be MUCH better policy to do a clean ascii install instead of "upgrading" by changing your sources. Going from jessie to ascii leaves you with a lot of junk floating around, you'll have an extra libicu, extra c processors etc in addition to other challenges.

So it's not just me! smile

Based on my experience, I will assume you were trying to install the Xfce stuff immediately after upgrading to Ascii. That was my case on several builds...couldn't install gdebi either.

I "found" two ways around the problem...

I found that if I booted into the desktop, used it for awhile, ran an update and upgrade...I could then install the Xfce items and gdebi. Strange, but it always worked for some reason.

The better way that I found was...

When changing your sources.list from jessie to ascii, also change to the pkgmaster repos. I've experienced no issues with that...everything installs without a hitch right off the bat. wink

Interesting setup but rather out of my league at the moment.

I was searching on how to get Master PDF Editor on my Devuan install but I have not found a way and it is not in the repo at the monment.
Then I came across your post.

Would you have a moment to tell me how to install it / what repository I have to use?

Thanks in advance,

A.

I just installed it out of curiosity. There are .deb packages available for it on their website...

https://code-industry.net/free-pdf-editor/

So all you need to do is download it and install it with the GDebi Package Installer.

It's Qt-based, so it won't look quite as polished as a GTK-based application.

happy 2018 with many miyo-ob editions

LOL!

For now...and unless Devuan releases Ascii before I can have these finished...they will be based on Jessie. However, upgrading to Ascii will be easier than ever...I'm bringing obmenu-generator back, and regaining the menu will only take two commands (in the terminal) if a user upgrades to Ascii. smile

All of the "Miyo tools" have been changed to open as GUIs, and the panel switcher will now change panels with one click, but it also overwrites the autostart file to use the chosen panel...so a user won't even have to modify the autostart file themselves. smile

Miyo-XTRA has greatly outnumbered the regular MiyoLinux downloads, so at this juncture, that will become MiyoLinux...though a user can still make it into a minimal Openbox desktop (with little effort) if they prefer.

I'm also considering making a Control Center, but that may be something I save for a future release...after all, the purpose of MiyoLinux is to provide a very minimal system that allows a user to "make it your own"...there's only so much that can be done while staying true to that original vision. If I throw all of my eggs into one basket, there'll be nothing to look forward to. LOL!

I'll shut up now...I've already said too much. tongue

Three pieces of string were wanting a cup of coffee each.

The first one walked into the café and asked the barista for a cappuccino. The barista looked him up and down and said, "We don't serve string here." The piece of string walked out feeling sorry for himself.

The second piece of string walked into the café and asked the barista for a mocha. The barista looked him up and down and said, "We don't serve string here." The piece of string walked out feeling dejected.

The third piece of string had watched all of this happen and formulated a plan. He unraveled his top, tied a half-hitch in his middle, and then walked into the café and asked for a latte. The barista looked him up and down with suspicion, considered it for a minute, and then said, "Are you a piece of string?"

To which the third piece of string answered, "Nope...frayed knot".

#949 Re: Devuan Derivatives » [MiyoLinux] Miyo-i3 Releases » 2017-12-23 15:23:45

Okay...the Miyo-i3 releases are now available.

Here's the condensed version of the release notes...

THE INSTALLER, LIVE USER NOTES, AND RELEASE NOTES ARE LOCATED IN THE DESKTOP FOLDER OF THE FILE MANAGER.

PLEASE READ THE "LIVE USER NOTES" FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET AND HOW TO CHANGE YOUR KEYBOARD LAYOUT IN THE LIVE SESSION.

Miyo-i3 was made so that users could have a minimal and base system on which to add the software and applications that they choose. Miyo is simply an acronym for "make it your own".

PLEASE NOTE: THERE ARE NO VIRTUALBOX GUEST ADDITIONS INCLUDED IN MIYOLINUX.

Live User Information:

Username = miyo
Password = miyo
Root password= miyo

RELEASE NOTES

While the Jessie .isos were made in December 2017, I'm releasing them as 2018 releases. smile

These versions of Miyo-i3 are based on Devuan Jessie.

1. In addition to dmenu, Miyo-i3 includes gmrun and the Menutray menu.
2. This release uses Devuan's Amprolla3 repositories.
3. Logout, Restart, Shutdown, etc. are immediate...no warning dialog.
4. Number Lock is included but not activated.
5. Added a "Start Up" sound when the desktop loads.
6. Didn't include GUFW, but UFW is installed.
7. Didn't include an Archive Manager to allow users to choose their own.
8. i3Lock usage (for those unfamiliar with it).
9. MiyoLinux Accessories.
10. Wallpapers are handled with Nitrogen instead of Feh.
11. Regarding the use of Compton.
12. For users who may want to upgrade to Ascii.
13. For users who would like the Update Notifier.
14. Keybinding for opening a web browser.
15. Mounting Removable Devices.
16. How to change the MOD key.
17. Volume Control on the i3bar.

More information for each is given in the full Release Notes.

By the way, I took dmenu (aka suckless-tools) from Ascii to give better font rendering in its menu. wink

Miyo-i3 is light on resources, but you can make it even a little lighter by disabling Wicd in the system tray. smile

If you install Miyo-i3, don't be surprised at how the installer appears on your screen...it's i3 after all, but the installer works the same. wink

For those who have been interested in i3 but didn't feel comfortable trying it, my hope is that Miyo-i3 will help you feel at least a little more comfortable. i3 isn't for everyone, but it's certainly fun to use and learn. Miyo-i3 still tiles windows, but I've included the Menutray menu to hopefully make the acclimation a little easier. Menutray looks similar to the LXDE menu and/or the menu in MiyoLinux...it's made by the same developer who made Obmenu-Generator. smile  Notes on how to use it are included in the Release Notes.

Edited to add: The Menutray menu is the little icon in the lower right that looks like a little house. Just click on it to open the menu.

Also, while i3 offers a seemingly endless amount of configuration, if you're new to i3, just familiarize yourself with the i3 Configuration file first. It's found in...

~/.i3/config

...or, there's a link to it in the Menutray menu for easy access. After you get the basics down, then explore deeper. A great place to learn more is the official i3 site ...  https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html

Edited to add again: In these screenshots, I have my wireless connection commented out on i3bar...didn't want my IP showing here. tongue  The default is to show Wireless and Ethernet. Both show on the i3bar, but depending on which one you're using, the active connection will be green, and the other will be red and show Down...hence the "E down" in the screenshots...not using Ethernet.

Here are some screenshots with the two new MiyoLinux wallpapers...click to enlarge them...

The default desktop with dmenu showing at the top...I moved the Conky to the left side of the screen so that it wouldn't clash with Menutray...
