As I actually have no success with Devuan / derivatives of , I test again old Ubuntu's. Why? I have a second reason, not my problems, but those of my wife! She use the old laptop of our step daughter, an old Apple Macbook (our son and his wife are doctors of medicine and those people often prefer Apple...), the last one she did have as a student (about 10 y. ago), and we have problems here. And not Devuan, not Devuan are known to be really installable on Macbook but Ubuntu 2016LTS (at that time did our son bring the Macbook with 3 CD's: one package from Apple, the initial system. one from Ubuntu 16 LTS and one from Suse).
And, I see: In Ubuntu 16 LTS for AMD64, there is no «live-config-upstart»
from apt-search live-config:
live-config/xenial,xenial 3.0.23-1+deb8u1 all
Live System Configuration Scriptslive-config-doc/xenial,xenial 3.0.23-1+deb8u1 all
Live System Configuration Scripts (documentation)live-config-sysvinit/xenial,xenial 3.0.23-1+deb8u1 all
Live System Configuration Scripts (sysvinit backend)
but it seems to be difficult to find a ".deb" for Ubuntu 2016 LTS AMD64.
And I will be prudent using other: I did have A LOT of successles experiment in the last times with live-config ending with errors no reparable.
oh! I have real enemies here? probably... the world is full of disfunctioning people killing their time (and more) writing critics in forums...
to the thematic sitself:
I did simply restart with the burn USB stick and write now with the stuff of that iso:
exactly the same comportment!
but, as I did would answer directly both above silly dilly persons, the forum machine, no, not it, but Firefox for it, did explain that "uou (I, also) use a unsecure connection, etc." as I did begin to enter my password.
my PC is at the same place since ab. 30 years and is DIRECTLY (wired) connected with the IAD (internet box) about 20 cm away from the public connector, directly, used as I by millions of German people! I can not change the internet box, but it is probably possible, that all the German rules are not any more accepted international (please don' t forget: java cam from Germany, Star Office cam from Germany, and Open Office, the shrinking form of it, also, of course, as well as KDE!)
Just installed. Nothing else done...
Firefox connects with LAN (wired) as you see, I write with it in that forum now!
Apt and synaptic refuse to update using sudo.
Wrong url or other reason (url's for Germany/Luxemburg ?)

installed through import of the 6 packages from sourceforge in an old Ubuntu, the ubuntu apt version miss a file live-config and declares that the installation is now wrong. The live-config system man page explains that is so, as the installed system is not a live system. how to repare the system (the 2 refracta package from sourceforge were installed, but ubuntu's apt can't remove / puge them.

thank you very much fsmithred! The problem seems to be:
using the hierarchy of the tree from https:/pkgmaster.devuan.org , you have only very small chances to find such an ISO especially if your interest is more somewhat inusual like i386 and ceres...
and if you have found or did get a link like yesterday, the result is very difficult to use...
using _ttps://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/dists/daedalus/main/installer-amd64/20230607%2Bdeb12u4devuan1/images/netboot/
I did try install ceres + the actual testing for amd64 as proposed and did have success for daedalus because the installation mode does -not expert- not includes the selections menu to commute to testing or experimental. but it was not that what I will: I have enough old snapshot isos out 2023 for deadalus (where my adaptations are already included! More than enough as I use daily only i386 versions out solidarity with the millions of poor people abandoned by a lot of important distributors...
actually my only one working installation in an experimental version with my adaptations is the Lubuntu 24.04 Noble minimal where I did install
sudo apt install abiword clex darktable deborphan didiwiki epiphany-browser gimagereader gimp gnumeric gparted granule gv hunspell kdenlive kturtle l3afpad lame luakit marble-qt marble-plugins merkaartor mgp mhwaveedit mplayer mplayer-gui nted osmo ranger tesseract-ocr ucblogo
but the refracta-tools continue to refuse to build the ISO (so I did have to search help at the English Ubuntu forum. They did propose
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/image-is … ions/42083
because I can use the new installation although if I would exceptionally come back to AMD64 installations because of the actual difficulty to install i386 on my main PC: I will maintain my installation free from not apparent (hidden) records resulting from daily use! It is important for me as I will transmit my iso to other).
My last working i386 «justXorg» was Nov. 2023 made from deadalus, yet as testing version, but already commuted to ceres (after that did I have the visualization problems you know, so I did have to renounce to actualize).
I did find the analog ISO to _ttps://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/dists/daedalus/main/installer-amd64/20230607%2Bdeb12u4devuan1/images/netboot/ but for i386 installation. I did not try the stable installation (daedalus). but both the expert installation for ceres as well as for testing did not have success.
so I did spend an extrem long time this week to try to use Devuan as it did becoming uncompatible with my PC and seem to stay so. and as we have in short time important European elections, I need an operable PC and must, sorry, let the arms hang down concerning Devuan. There is not only PC matter in the live...
I did install twice:
- usual mode: I did not find the selections point for excalibur / ceres (does the installer save the ENTER entries in its puffer? It can be an explication). The installation of stable is good and seems to work very well excepted Grub did refuse it's installation (but it was me right as I don't wish those changing if I only test in real mode, not in the virtualization, in my eyes, it is not the same, the installation of somewhat is new for me.
- expert mode: I did find the selections point immediately before the step «installing base system», did try to install in excalibur, but this trying to install did crash without I had can find some reason...
are the 2 mode so different?
you speak about the difference between a man and an eunuch... at a certain point of time did happen somewhat and the skills are not the same any more after that ...
transferred to the PC Welt It was the new kernel because so far it has been well (read the theme of the thread: «the new kernels disturb»! Until november 2023 I did NEVER have such problems!). A good man can. A eunuch can't any more. Do you want a eunuchist distribution?
and some poking around, might find
_ttps://pkgmaster.devuan.org/devuan/dists/daedalus/main/installer-amd64/20230607%2Bdeb12u4devuan1/images/netboot/
Really, you are right! There is a tiny netinstall ISO with actually 63 MB size. I will try it immediately if it also is prepared for testing or experimental!
(I did not found because we found the Debian ISO searching for Trixie and/or SID, and not the stable, and, of course, we did not search in stable...)
from experimental, testing and stable and, if not, why?
Devuan is Debian without systemd is the definition!
And debian offers such an ISO with an commutations selection for one of above 3 installations with only 45 MB (a few seconds of download, but also of upload. This is useful for all!!! Uploading distributions management AND users! A few seconds «dd» burning time on the USB stick or card
=
immediately active!
All spare cost and time...
At Ubuntu «L»ubuntu, you would find a next form of commutations selection between «full install» (but only in LXQT, Ubuntu is only in LXQT, sorry, I would had prefer «JWM» because you can test more (installation and success for other sessions managers like LXDE, XFCE4< GNOME, KDE etc. without to have to take under consideration the pre existence of some LXQT in the installation... better would be JWM and PREINSTALLED refractatools! «Tasksel» is the right way for more!!!) and pure destop minimal (would be JWM, refractatools, sakura, nano/nano-gui, ranger/ranger-gui. mplayer/mplayer-gui, one CLI browser, dependencies for webkit but no pre installed webkit or browser (as it's begins with luakit, only about 100 MB disk capacity consumption: Luakit is a great minimal browser after «xombrero» did disappear!).
lease encourage this request and say «yes» to this proposal (it does not must at all be a daily upload as at Debian or Lubuntu as it is an actual download of all components fresh from main site...)!
This is potentially an important point, especially with regard to tablet/touch PCs.
this is an important detail for ALL INDUSTRY PC's (I don't know some machine PC not having some touch screen...)!
I have and use the
Wacom
tablet, mouse and pen 2d generation (after the one 1. generation I had connected with the Pentium) and it is a lot of years ago no problem at all!
here is a snippet of some notes I have... but I haven't had to compile my own kernel for a long time now. So your mileage may vary.
Thank you really for your interest Glenn. My situation is the same: I did build 3 times in my live (I am very old and did immediately adopt the use of PC's as it came. My first "pc" was not a PC but the pocket calculator from Sinclair to build from Sinclair kit (ab. 1979..1980). But my second PC was the real great PC ZX81 also build myself from Sinclair kit (to appreciate: 1973 did my employer buy, after a desk computer for our activity in air conditioning technology, the first pocket calculator for the ONE under all in a staff of engineers and it did cost about the price from IBM PC ten years later (it was more than a car)! We, the other, did continue to use manually our logarythm rulers and discs and 7 short years later, I did have a «dwarf computer», but, yes, at home, assembled myself and with a clear keyboard for texts, not only for hexadecimal...) as I did try and have success (it was automatised! by Thierry Nuttens, the creator of the distro Nutyx) to build Linux from Scratch (the problem from Nutyx at this time was, that it was the pure base, what was automatised, so LFS, but not BLFS...
but why build my own kernel?
I can select a user friendly distro like Extix (probably the GREATEST fan and supporter from the Refracta tools!). Exton supply his derivatives from Debian, Ubuntu, Deepin, Devuan, Arch, and other distributors with
his own exton kernels, never with the original kernel form distributor,
and the exton kernels work all perfectly
so the motivation to build myself the kernel is not great. As I did compile my kernel, I did yet have a old Pentium and not an i7 like today and it was long, long, very long... But at this time the kernel was small! Today, the kernel did become bigger and bigger and bigger: So it stay probably the same: long, long, very long! Why?
Hi fsmithred,
as announced above I did try on the lubuntu minimal iso 24.04 Noble (experimental) from https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/i386/daily/netboot/ (mini.iso daily build 45 mb size, only a few seconds to download or burn with dd on usb stick!) to make a refractasnapshot more following your recommendation (*1 from today. it does not go!
after you start the snapshot with option 1, no CD image ISO build from refractasnapshot.
after you make a second start with option 2, you get an ISO in /home/snapshot but the subdire /home/work continue to exist.
if you burn the new gotten ISO on USB stick and mount the PC with it, the usual menu of refractasnapshot appears, but with following errors (very significative for the continuation!)
-----------Live Media-------------
${DISTRO} (default)
Other language (TAB to edit)
${DISTRO} (load to RAM)
${DISTRO} ...
etc.
If you start, the ISO start well until the graphic system, the graphic cursor appears, but the new system does never find the, in this case, LXQT system and does accept no entry. You can only reboot properly with CTRL+ALT+F5 and CTRL+ALT+DEL.
(*1 but you have to change in /etc/refractasnapshot.conf the lines
kernel_image="/boot/vmlinuz"
initrd_image="/boot/initrd.img" !
We do not fork the debian kernel. If you have issues with it, you should direct your complaints to debian or possibly to kernel.org. Not here.
To answer your question, I don't think you need to do anything special to use refractainstaller in ubuntu, but to use refractasnapshot you need to change the initrd compression to xz. When the next version of refractasnapshot is released, you won't need to use xz compression. The new version will support zstd compression.
thank you very much! I will try immediately!
With all due respect, why do you need that masochism?
After all, it is clear that there were no decent Linux drivers for this model, there are no and there never will be.Give it to the suffering in the underdeveloped countries that you are so concerned about, and the children will give you a normal computer, without unnecessary options. With a processor of approximately the same level, it’s about $100 and will work without problems.
are you really TOO ... TO UNDERSTAND (you say clear and direct, I would be masochist - I prefer, myself, let the reader find himself a word for you else is it is so evident ;-) ... You did begin with insultations. Why? Is each non conform thematic for you forbidden? Will YOU in this forum mark the begin of an hunt against people thinking differently as you?), that industry PC's have the same hardware and bring or are awaiting the same problem or need Linux no reduced PC with less technical equipment and comfort to work secure?
and the style of you answer in the part concerning underdeveloped countries and their children is typical for the linuxers with the high nose having canceled the millions of existing PC yet in good condition hopping make more money, more money, more money (the rich ones did become more and more rich through the last crisis...
Devuan claims to be the correspondent from Debian but without systemd.
Ok.
But also with an other level!
Actually, if you want to test and operate with iso images for CD from Debian, you can use Debian images with a size from 45..47 MB! The download require a few seconds, the burning on USB requires a few seconds, and the execution is fast depending of your internet connection of course. Where are such tools to test Devuan?
Devuan will not compare itself with the other giant of Debian world, Ubuntu. But for the target of testing the new version, Ubuntu offers the reduced version Lubuntu and, in it, the a step more reduced installations way «minimal Lubuntu» (definition: only the pure desktop equipment of the already reduced version Lubuntu! It is in my opinion always to much: I would have better seen "desktop equipement base" only, also in the case of LXQT using Openbox, only Openbox without LXQT, but the main distro developers will not encourage the users but better their guy's from development offices like those from LXQT!). Where are such tools to test Devuan?
It is so, as the testing of the actual (definition from Debian: nightly build!) Devuan testing (I speak from Ceres, but not only: also the stable version from Devuan did get new kernels from type 6.xxxx!) needs so long to download, write on usual USB sticks/cards etc. you can only do one, let the arm fall down and renounce!
Note from 20240129: see here a user friendlich approach to test a distribution, even in i686 !
https://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/i386/daily/netboot/
dear aluma, your vision is not correct:
a/ yes, Dell XT3 has special proprieties, but also the most INDUSTRY PC built in machines and controlling the production in the world. I am engineer for production planing and realization in the textile industry and did begin to use PC a few months after passed the 1. January 1980 and it is the industry which did move PC's in the position they are now! It seems you live on the moon...
b/ I have 2 XT3 (one directly connected with the TV near the TV and one as my main PC at my working place) and 2 other both different Dell Aptitude (the old main PC and the light one with phone adapter for SIM card). All did do all that what I need until November 2023 as the first kernel from type 6.xxx did appear. With those kernels the question is not as explained in your link that special figures of Dell XT3 are not supported: The question is NOTHING MORE is possible because you CAN'T CONTROL AT ALL your PC as all the input data are drawn in my case at the top right rand of the screen so that no mouse usage continue to be possible and, dear aluma, Linux without mouse, you are certainly aware, that is «ratpoison» and nothing more...
c/ we date today 2024 and you come with a link from 2020! 4 year passed without reaction? The XT3 uses common technology with about all industry PC's (and a lot of administration's PC needing as industry PC's touch screen technology etc. And nothing did happen in 3..4 years? its a shame if you find, that would be ok! Linux declassified itself heavily... All bigger bigger and bigger constantly but less less less services for the users of all categories!
Sounds like this is no longer a discussion about installing Devuan.
You are wrong: As long as Devuan creates new problems without solution, although if they came from Debian itself (with the line of Kernels beginning in 6.xxx, and although if they possibly came from the kernel maintainer itself, I really don't know, it is to high for me), it is an information exchange that important for all the Debian-derivatives-world, that ONE member, Ubuntu, the way knows, don't to confront his users with those problems ;-) or does you find ok, to do that as actually DEBIAN and Devuan does?
this version of Extix Linux is a really
greatest
Linux version
excepted
one unique
error disturbing me (heavily) that I did, for this reason (heavily), try and continue to try to amend (for myself).
more here (if you are really interesting!):
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php … st14177445
or here (older message from 24 (!) . 12.2023 ;-)
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?t=10177
supplem. info: that ISO were not made from Ubuntu original nightly build but from extix linux build, so I did not answer the msg from clarity as Exton from extix.se itself is contributor at the puppy forum and was informed from me about my Christmas action!)
(I continue to hope some one would help me to resolve 2 problems:
- using correctly the refractatools in ACTUAL OR COMING (24.04) Ubuntu
- revolve the visualizations problems in the new kernels (problems SOLVED (or not created / avoided to create by Ubuntu!) in Devuan! Why? For solidarity with the millions of owners of old PC based on i686, I, normally, use ONLY i686 software on my i7 7- or 4-core computers!
But, actually,
I can't because all Devuan derivatives distribute foolish kernels disturbing my computers so much, it can't be possible any more to use then...
there were really problems on ALL Debian derivates incl. Debian itself and Ubuntu. but never at extix.se (it always build it's kernel itself ;-) for all his distros...).
but Ubuntu publish actually especially in the 24.04 noble (experimental!) an ISO without that error and after actualization the error comes not again!
(but problems with refractasnapshot: it claims ${DISTRO} in ubuntu :-( ...)
With just booting to my old home folder all worked fine except having to start up the network each time and I foolishly changed /etc/timezone instead of /etc/localtime. It seems that the set_time script doesn't like my date format either. Since the hardware clock will be set from the system on log out it doesn't matter.
the time management in ALL PC's is absolutely ridiculous... We have today (personal) Computers a lot better of those of the army minister of the time before PC's did exist but those machine with Artificial Intelligence are fully incompetent to adapt itself to the real hour although they contain all an exceptional clock in itself!
it is to laugh...
an interesting case. the oldest person of my family did die last November with 97 y. She did refuse computer usage in the last years of her live (but was one of the first person having to really work intensively at the big computer console of a really Finance Minister of a world country!). My father did die 10 y. ago. Probably was his love to his PC a reason of the point of his dead because he did not have success to convert his knowledge (old 8 and 16 bit systems) into Windows 7. It was a reason of real despair and to find more live nonsens (at that time, we did have full access to all in the web! Without to have to "accept" or "pay"! It was an fully other time I think!) . He would be today ab. 99 y., the same generation also as your dad! I know the danger (I am ab. 78 y. old) as well in computer sciences as in sport: The target of your activity has to be accessible for you. Pilates is no problem (excepted one exercice), Ashtanga yoga is one but with little concession I have good chances to accede to my goal...
Back from sport to PC: What does your father with his PC? One target is clear, we did read it: email correspondence. Ok, but what else?
Decades ago, a developer staff did design an OS especially for old person. It was a kind of mini Puppy Linux based on Ubuntu (with which it was 100 % compatible) so there was no limit (excepted the limits of the beginning Ubuntu itself! It did really have limits...).
The base did propose only a hand of activity:
- browse the web and electronic mail
- calculate
- write
- listen music
- skype (no distro at this stage of evolution without skype)!
With your continuous experience (my did finish, concerning old people excepted myself, with the dead of my own father) what would you do change in that definition?
@oui will you please confirm installing this package fixes your WiFi problem?
I did install nothing ;-) ! It was pre-installed by the system! All depends probably from system! I test actually extix 2311. The connection is all different from the connection in other systems (and you have to look at the information page) but the distro is top! Probably one of the 2 best distro I did ever meet (is the future ubuntu Noble 24.04 but modified, and good, by Exton! The only one problem: it's 64 and only use 32 bit longer out solidarity with the billion human have access to old PC's but not to news one ;- ) (and because it is nonsens to use a PC organized as 4 .. 7 core and working so and to say, «work now 64 it seems to be better for you, computer!», nonsens pure...)). The other was Kuliax 6.1, the master of distro design in my opinion. But is is long time ago!
Perhaps would an other system solve immediately your problem...
Hello @oui
could you please post the output of your detected wifi card, similar to @theamnesiacphilospher ?
A quick search regarding your model should be helpful. I would be happy to help point you in the right direction! It could be possible you have different repos enabled. Could you please also post the sources.list from your respective devices?

a point of view I did not speak enough until now:
I did work about ONE FULL YEAR ALONG with daedalus EXPERIMENTAL with NO problem!
and short time after it did be defined as the new actual release the idiotic developers introduce in the MUST upgrade new kernels in a way (that Ubuntu or Emabüntus NOT FOLLOW! Also both introduce new kernels, but THEY WORK!) making that the NEW STANDARD NOW DISTURBS productive PC's (I don't speak here about Ceres or Escalibur).
And no reaction,,,
That can not be possible!
The definition were:
Devuan = exactly Debian without systemd
not new experimentations being dangerous for the users...
Or is also the stable productive Debian version exactly so ILL now as Devuan?
you are right.
concerning 6.1 kernel, I am very confuse because at that time (it is now old) devuan did use links into the kernel administration. It was not easy to understand what is the matter
because
soon cames upgrades with other kernels and
a part of the old trace of kernel did continue to be present
and the initial kernel was away...
and, of course, If you meet difficulties using a new release / iso, you stop immediately it use after you understand you can't continue, what else. after that I did try Devuan itself (also because I need a 32 bit installation; my PC is 64 bit but it works also in 32 bit and after the drama of Corona where PC's were absent in thousand of schools in the world, I will mark my solidarity with poor peoples (millions, perhaps billions) having only 32 bit hardware and refuse to continue to use 64 bit software if I am not a very very important need of it. The industry will 64 bit hardware because of business not because of frequent needs by the users... And we all do as we find that normal?
as you know ( https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=5965 ) refracta 32 bits experimental seems not to be recommended and is big (actually my full filled version of extix 20231123 (that one, not full filled, as a size of only 2050 MB!) has the size of 2.3 GB (refractasnapshot).and seems to work fantastic with a lot of build in software like darktable 64 bit, the new one, emacs (was already in the not full filled original iso from extix) making with swi-prolog a absolute powerfull prolog development equipment, etc. etc. why use an Iso having a size of 3,5 GB (it just under the limit of fat16 to burn usb's!). Yes, because it is as wished in 32 bit! but for other reason?
If you want to see what full equipment I require from my installed full version, you can see it under following link https://e.pcloud.link/publink/show?code … RGAbUjtENX (the base is, I am myself sorry, Ubuntu Noble Numbat 24.04 as given to us by https://extix.se ) my actual daily used full iso with only 2.3 GB size (that I start from USB card, this is the reason why the size is very important for me: all in those 2,3 GB size!).
dear fschmithred, you must understand that this problem, chaos on the screen, is absolute terrible for each pc owner and can't continue longer as some hours and I did recognize NO HELP coming from Devuan DAYS AND DAYS AND DAYS. The real help came from https://extix.se (in 64 bit, sorry of that) and https://emmabuntus.org/ (both in 32 bit as well as in 64 bit).
Devuan did break in September 2023
ALL CONFIDENCE IN THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE DEVELOPMENT exposing the user to such terrible breakout of activity!
