#601 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Fresh Installation of Devuan Wifi Not Working & Grub Issue » 2024-01-04 18:39:54

Good grief! A full quote post in response to clear instructions NOT TO FULL QUOTE POST. What am I missing here?

#602 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » merged /usr » 2024-01-02 19:33:26

@steve_v . . . Thank you for trying to bring order and focus to the chaos . . .

#603 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] How to fix unicode text, it's showing as a box » 2024-01-01 18:25:35

You can install LibreOffice Writer without installing all of LibreOffice. Cuts down on the bloat . . .

#604 Re: Devuan » Debian Farm? » 2023-12-30 21:05:43

/me notes how annoying it is to have to keep blocking gifs

one question. which init has the xfce iso live version?

Same as the installer isos sysvinit.

sisqonrw wrote:

and is there also a kde iso live version?

No. But you can download and add KDE after installation.

Hahaha! Thanks for the stats!! Just shows how accurate our perceptions are . . . Carry on with making us smile!

What's with all the wife jokes . . . ? How about some husband jokes for balance?

I do not think libsystemd0 is harmful

Yes, it is just an annoyance but removing it would be wasted effort for no benefit. That's why it may still present in Devuan.

paculino wrote:

but I seem to be unable to have it, as holding it when installed would not allow installing these packages (well, dummy-elogind allowed some of them, but not all).

Unless something has changed, there is no need to have libsystemd0 present in Devuan.

#609 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » merged /usr » 2023-12-28 03:09:10

There are extensive discussions on the DNG mail list. The takeaway (if I understand it correctly) is that unless we have a huge influx of devs to fork the necessary packages, usrmerge will be unavoidable. Read and draw your own conclusions.

#610 Re: Devuan » Wifi setup in devuan » 2023-12-28 03:01:04

@quickfur . . . Did you follow either of the migration instructions posted here? Apologies if you mentioned that you did previously . . .

Also the wireless prefixes are the old ones not the ones in Debian. Don't ask me what they are. I don't have wireless enabled.

#611 Re: Installation » Bookworm -> Daedalus migration nscd network-manager failed » 2023-12-28 02:56:34

This this forum post titled Why are systemd files present in Devuan? will help you understand that those files that are bothering you are harmless and necessary. Note that I posted that statement but did not write it. Take care . . .

#612 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] transmission-gkt ( release version) » 2023-12-27 18:05:35

@stopAi . . . tread carefully. That was uncalled for.

#613 Re: Installation » KDE Desktop » 2023-12-25 16:18:45

From https://www.devuan.org/get-devuan :

desktop-live: Explore the default Xfce desktop before installing. Then install easily and quickly from the live session using the refractainstaller. Firmware is installed but can easily be removed.

No! Don't blame AI!! It is stupid humans who always have and always will find creative ways to destroy even their own species.

#615 Re: Other Issues » Security updates for forked packages? (e.g. xorg-server) » 2023-12-23 20:48:07

It looks like xorg-server comes directly from Debian so you shouldn't have to do anything special if you sources.list is in order.

#616 Re: Installation » KDE Desktop » 2023-12-23 20:37:40

Welcome to Devuan. Please refer to the Install Guide which includes screenshots of the installer options. #17 lists the options available for DE or WM.

#617 Re: Installation » linux-image-6.1.0-16-amd64 » 2023-12-23 20:33:42

Perhaps they are wanting to see if anyone will notice on the way to deprecating these functions entirely? Maybe you could file a bug with the kernel folks . . .

Yes . . . this Devuan derivative. It has been around for many years. May not work on you device though . . .

#619 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » trying to keep my 100yr-old father computing for another year » 2023-12-22 15:44:55

Note that to get to Daedalus from Beowulf you have to go through Chimaera first and that might be a good place to hang for a year or two . . .

#620 Re: Devuan » New Devuan user here » 2023-12-19 18:38:03

@greenjeans . . . It's looking like there won't be any more Devuan custom themes for you to bitch about . . . so you can do a happy dance . . .   wink

#621 Re: Devuan » New Devuan user here » 2023-12-18 19:12:02

Sigh . . . that wasn't the point either . . .

#622 Re: Devuan » New Devuan user here » 2023-12-18 17:31:50

@quickfur . . .  That wasn't the point. The point was that some of the packages in that list are not connected to Devuan's "magic" to work around systemd.

I have done this more than once. It 'just works' to have only one drive available for the install. smile You can also use uuid magic to sort it . . .

#624 Re: Off-topic » I'm Back » 2023-12-16 17:10:38

I have never installed pulseaudio. Always used apulse and alsa. There were some audio issues with jitsi early on. And folks still have intermittent issues. A lot depends on your hardware. KISS works best.

#625 Re: DIY » Announcement of the OpenMATE desktop environment » 2023-12-16 16:09:04

This is a welcome project. I did use Mate a long time ago but at some point wandered off to Xfce. If I were more adventurous, I'd give it a spin. But in time Xfce might just provide enough 'incentive' to push me back to Mate! Do keep us posted . . .
