The name is staying, as I've said before I don't have reasons to worry about legal implications since:
1. I don't live in the US, neither does my hosting;
2. I'll not be profiteering from the project;
3. This likely wouldn't get in any distro repositories even if it had a different name;
and last but not least important 4. it's a funny, silly pun on IBM's past and present products. Let them bicker about branding and identity as they have done for years, we don't need to do the same since GNOME/2 Is Not GNOME.

Any updates on this?
All the GitHub URLs still point to a 404 page, which means either you forgot to point us to the active repository or this project is dead. What a shame... Especially in the wake of all this XLibre stuff.
Will continue to just use Xfce 4.12 (GTK2) until I'm finally done with all technology...

It would be nice if Mate didn't require all that garbage to use. dbus and polkit as examples.
I don't trust all that redhatware which is why I tend to stick with jwm.

Hi, brocashelm. I feel your frustration. I also wish I could just be done with all of it, but unfortunately I don't think this is a realistic option for most people. As complex/proprietary/privacy-disrespecting software wraps its tentacles around more and more facets of daily life, I confess that I find myself becoming more and more jealous of the Amish.
One obvious way to make GNU/Linux suck less is to use only FOSS. Another way is to not use any Desktop Environment at all--to use your own selection of smaller, modular applications instead.
I am a former MATE user but now I just use Fluxbox + xfe file manager (in my X environment) or labwc + sfwbar + xfe (in my wayland environment). It takes some work to make such a spartan environment comfortable but, once it's configured, it's very satisfying to use, simpler to understand, and very difficult to break.

@GNUser I myself like JWM, because it is an ultra lightweight window manager and has most of the features people desire in a window manager without excessive bloat.
Uses very little cpu power too.
