I wonder if the 14.04 and ascii packages are based on the same lightdm version.
Don't think so. I got version 1.18.3 under ASCII.
Interestingly I have quite the same configuration, ASCII upgraded from Jessie, Mate and lightdm. No issues so far on my desktop PC.
What happens if you disable ntp?
Good luck, rolfie
First of all, would you reveal your desktop and WM?
Haven't seen this with lightdm and Mate.
Have a look into the logs e.g. syslog from the previous boot where the bootup is stopping.
Regards, Rolf
The hint to switch to pkgmaster did the job. TB is up from 52.6 to 52.7, and the language packs fit.
Thanks, rolfie
Sorry, forgot to mention: I am on ASCII, and use auto.mirror.devuan.org.
Will wait until tomorrow or so.
Thanks, rolfie
Looks like Thunderbird ist up to date with version 52.6.0-1, while the language packs are lower and won't install with dependency errors.
Is that a bug report or is there another solution?
Thanks, rolfie
Thats it, had the systemd-backend installed. After switching to *-consolekit: all problems fixed.
Thanks, rolfie
Just installed on a PC: Jessie cli, upgraded to ASCII, then installed xorg, lightdm and Mate desktop.
Now I have got a few issues with permissions.
1.) As user when I try to shutdown/reboot the PC the user is logged off, I end up in lightdm. The shutdown/reboot icons in lightdm are also dimmed. I have to go through a root terminal.
2.) When I connect a USB stick I get a message in Mate that I am not authorised to mount the stick. When I mount the stick in a root terminal, its also shown on the desktop, looks like I can use it as usual.
3.) Synaptic does not start from the menu. Does in the root terminal.
4.) Have installed gnome-system-tools. I can call up users-admin and display one or the other property, but I have no access to the advanced settings.
One or the other permission must be off. Where do I need to tweak?
Thanks, rolfie
Thanks, that did the job. Upgrade to ASCII finished successfully.
rolfie
Fresh Jessie console mode only install, upgrading to ASCII (different PC)
Have eudev 3.2.2-12 received during dist-upgrade, got error messages like:
- insserv rejected the script header
- service udev is already installed
Fails to update the initramfs, issues with initramfs-tools etc.
What is wrong, what can I do?

Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Tried apt install eudev -f, autoremoved old stuff, apt update, dpkg --configure -a, no help so far.
Thanks, rolfie
Finally made the move: task-xfce-desktop was not even installed, I had to remove the xfce4 package. In a second step I could autoremove all the packages that came with xfce4.
Now that PC is running with Devuan Jessie with lightdm and Mate.
Thanks, rolfie
Same issue, no solution for ASCII, see here:
https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=1753
Regards, rolfie
I have configured Devuan Jessie with Mate as my prefered desktop in parallel to XFCE. Now there are several menu entries I would like to get rid of. Can I simply and safely uninstall
task-xfce-desktop
without any side effects? Anything else to consider?
Thanks, rolfie
After some updates the behaviour of my Devuan Jessie installation finally has changed. No idea what may have caused this.
Now I just get
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 0
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
rpcbind: rpcbind teminating on signal. Restart with "rpcbind -w"
After this message appears, it only takles a few seconds until the mainboard is powered off. This is how I like to see it.
The ASCII VM still behaves the same as before.
Hints/comments are welcome.
Regards, rolfie
Got a Devuan Jessie encrypted working. A nuisance I have seen is a about 60s delay during the shutdown of the PC when stopping the 2 crypto disks. Here is a shortened transcript from a screenshot from a VM:
[....] Stopping remaining crypto disks...sda2_crypt (busy)..... .......
[FAILsda2_crypt (busy)...sda2_crypt (busy).....sda2_crypt (busy) failed.
sda3_crypt (busy)...sda3_crypt (busy)..... ......
....
[FAILsda3_crypt (busy)...sda3_crypt (busy).....sda3_crypt (busy) failed.
done.
[FAIL] Stopping early crypto disks ...sda2_crypt (busy)...failed.
[FAILcrypt (busy)...failed.
done.
[Info] Will now halt.
The first line is displayed, then it takes about one minute until the rest is shown. The same happens in a VM with a Jessie upgraded to Ascii.
I get a similar message on my Wheezy workstation, but no delay.
Anything I can do, a tweak? Or is this a bug?
Thanks, Rolf
When checking out the package content of firmware-linux-nonfree 0.43 firmware for RV710 is included. So I am wondering which firmware is being used here? The 'nonfree' or xorg?
xorg does not contain firmware, that is part of the external firmware-linux-nonfree package since its propriority contents.
