Hi
I am sorry to say this. You have a FrankenDevuan in your sources list. Apt (aswell apt-get and aptitude) cannot solve the dependencies with this. Deb-multimedia is a no go. They rebuild a lot of debians packages. And they are not compatible with Devuan. They are also a problem in pure Debian if you are doing anything special. Remove anything but devuan from your sources list. And if you are lucky a very necessary downgrade as suggested by Head_on_a_Stick will solve most problems.

Hi
Stumbled on this: https://oracle-base.com/blog/2012/03/16 … ev-issues/
Could this be the issue
Lars H
Hi
Maybe frankenDevuan maybe not. Maybe try to remove openrc (and use the default sysvnit) instead. I have had problems with openrc on devuan. Not the case with sysvinit. And what rules did you apply to /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules ??? . How are your /etc/apt/sources.list and other files from there.
It is difficult to help because we don't know what you have done in your editing. And why are you using the kernel form unstable instead from backports. And why not 4.19 that you report works just fine.
I have one rule. If it works don' t break it. Seems to me you are making some of the problems yourself. I am sure we will like to help you. But try not to mess with things. Use packages from only one distro and release (Beowulf). Do not blend them that will just make more problems.

Hi
Happy that you got things sorted out (sort of). The developers knows about the audio problem but they cannot fix everything debian is doing in a bad manner. But all you needed to know is stated in the release notes. The easy way to deal with pure alsa in a gui is as have said many times to install volumicon-alsa and add it to your desktop startup.

Hi
What does "aplay -l" say ??? And as well "cat /proc/asound/cards" ?? For me it looks like, enabled or not, that linux sees your intel device.
Have you tried with pulseaudio enabled (see devuan release notes for howto enable it).
Have a nice day
Hi again
That's is just fine. But in many cases the volume is muted so you cant hear anything. This is because most programs defaults to pulseaudio. You can try what i suggested above, or read in the relesenotes howto enable pulseaudio.

Hi
Does your audio work. Try using alsamixer in a terminal. With that you can choose device and set the volume. Pulseaudio is not the default in Devuan. But if alsa works install volumeicon-alsa and add it to your desktop and your done. It works

Hi again
I can see that a lot more of your processes are running outside the loginmanager. Is this a problem (I think of xfwm and xfdesktop)

Hi
As you probably know the default with xfce is slim and elogin. I think the problem could be with lightdm and xfce. Look here if this is the problem :-))

Hi
Welcome
I am sure you will find what you want in Devuan

Hi
When you login (su) as root you need to login with "su -" su + empty space and then - to get root with full path. It is not a bug but a deliberate change from debian.
Have an nice day

It
Removing systemd is the reason, but it it is built on top of debian, not ubuntu, mint and other mostly newcomer friendly systems. And debian is not noob friendly. But if you want something new, and something you can make your own it is a very good foundation (that's why ubuntu and mint are based on debian).
And because of the extent that systemd has taken over the control af the whole linux-world it is not a simple task to remove and keep the system usefull at the same time.

Hi
I am sorry. Took the readout from the wrong post ;-()
Core 2 is 64 bit and amd compatible. So it should work. And use 64-bit if you have more than 4 GB ram. BUT core2 has only a 32-bit pci bus. If you have 4 GB or less ram I would advise you to run 32-bit linux. It uses less ram, and the 32-bit pci bus is a bottleneck ;-)

Hi
Look here https://wiki.trinitydesktop.org/Devuan_ … structions
Most ppa's expect systemd. And not having that is the sole reason behind creating Devuan. Is this maybe your problem ??

Lars H
Hi
The cpu is an amd 2700x. So it is absolutely a 64bit cpu.
To Devuman: Are you booting with or without UEFI. Are you doing a standard or expert install. Auto or manual partioning ??

Hi
The most important thing when trying something new is to stay calm. Try to see how the default works. They are quite often default for a reason. And as you get used to it you can change a few things. So it is you who are making things complicated because you want devuan to behave like Linux Mint in a hurry. And off course it does not work like that. Try and experiment and you might be surprised when you get used to something new ;-))

Hi
Go into settings and change the I/o backend to alsa. This is better than using pulseaudio. In the case with musescore I get scratching playback using PulseAudio. Alsa works perfect (and is the default for Devuan). I am using musescore myself quite a lot as a musician.
I would also suggest you to install musescore3 from backports. It is more modern and just as stable as the old version.

Hi
And this is a problem. Unfortunately allmost every gui to day are using pulseaudio, and thereby reducing latency for sound (it makes the sound worse). I know only two current gui programs that works with alsa. Volumicon-alsa for gtk (wich I use myself) and as far as I know it qasmixer for qt. I think it is a shame people think they need pulseaudio. It is actually just a software layer that was added to solve some old problems with pure ALSA, that is not there today. I my humble opinion these two alternatives should be default in Devuan, and pulseaudio completely removed. I have it removed on my system because i use it for sound production with jack. At least as this is the most asked quatstion the alternatives should have been mentioned in the relsenotes.

Hi
I am using my for serious sound production (I am a pro musician). In voulmeicon (wich are solely using alsa) you can in preferences set your device. I am sure it will rembember it. And yes you will have to add it the startup of your desktop. In alsamixer F6 will allow you to do the same.

Hi
Many people has these problems with sound on Devuan. Should in my opinion be fixed (and optimal without using pulseaudio)
As you are using a gtk environment, i would install volumeicon-alsa and add it to the startuplist. This is one of a few guis for pure ALSA. And it works and integrates well. And no need for deteriorating sound through pulseaudio which mostly add latency.

Hi
You are on ascii-stein (as in Frrankenstein the monster). Almost no new features are being installed. Only packages that requires no new dependencies or removals are being updated. But if it stable at the moment wait until you feel ready to finish the upgrade. Good luck with your upgrade

Hi
You cant boot Windows 7 without CSM. Then enable csm. You said your bios is broken. In what way. I hvve looked into asus support and if you decide to upgrade/downgrade your bios I would choose ver. 5216 They tell it is fixed for some linux related problems. If efi install does not work, then make the install using legacy (csm). You do not need to change your partitioning from gpt. But be sure to make 2mb free in the start of the disk so grub can install in legacy mode.

Lars H
Hi again
If you did know everything well enough then you would not have a problem ;-)) So please don't be rude. Many other people have this board running well with linux. Again: How is your partioning. How is your fstab. Try with bios fail-safe settings. Beowulf does mostly install well on secureboot only machines. This is one af the main features of Debian Buster. If you are doing all sorts of tricks, chances are you are screwing things up. And if you want help please provide the necessary information. We do all make simple mistakes from time to time.
Have a nice day
Hi
How are your disks partitioned ?? Bios set up: CSM, Legacy boot, secure boot. Beowulf does install with these on. Searching Google tells me that there are successful installs on the same machine
