hi,  it seems that Beowulf on my computer is crashing often.  typically the screen would freeze and keyboard is not responsive.  I use Beowulf on my HTPC and usually firefox and kodi are opened on the desktop.  It's installed on a HP computer with Nvidia card and solid state HD.

anyone else has beowulf crashing issues?

#52 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » 'scim' input method stopped working on beowulf » 2020-07-08 00:05:30

I resolved my issue by creating a ~/.Xsession file in home directory:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANG
XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
export XMODIFIERS
GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"
export GTK_IM_MODULE
scim -d&

startxfce4

hi, I use 'scim' on beowulf to input Chinese character if needed.

It seems that 'scim' stopped working, pressing 'ctl + space' doesn't switch between english and chinese input methods anymore. I have tried to reinstall 'scim' and reboot the machine to no avail.

Here's the output of .xsession-errors

I removed and reinstalled the 'nvidia-persistenced', followed by reboot, it seems ok now, no error related to this pkg displays during boot or pkg installation smile

#55 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » no 'X' window on Beowulf with nvidia card » 2020-06-29 01:31:25

Thanks for the reply!

I was able to resolve the issue by uninstalling the nvidia driver downloaded from nvidia website, and reinstalled it with apt-get.

sudo sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.108.run --uninstall
sudo apt-get install nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver

However, at the end of installation, there's an error on the screen:
Errors were encountered while processing:
nvidia-persistenced
E:  Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code 1.

I rebooted and was able to boot both  '4.19.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.118-2+deb10u1 (2020-06-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux' and
'4.9.0-12-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.210-1  (2020-01-20) kernel into XFCE desktop successfully - i was only able to launch 'X' with  4.9.0-12 kernel after upgrading to Beowulf.

the error for 'nvidia-persistenced' persists - both displaying on screen during the boot process and pops up when install new package with apt-get, trying to reinstalling nvidia-persistenced results:
E: internal error, no file name for nvidia-persistenced:amd64.

hello, I couldn't log into 'X' after rebooting my Beowulf machine yesterday ( i've been running 'xfce' for a week since upgrading to beowulf last weekend on 4.9.0-12 kernel)

I have  have a nvidia geforce 9300 GE card with nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver installed.  And recently upgraded from ASCII.

boot with '4.19.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.118-2+deb10u1 (2020-06-07) x86_64 GNU/Linux' from Grub menu resulted a blank screen, and
boot with '4.9.0-12-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.210-1  (2020-01-20) x86_64 GNU/Linux  gives me shell, but 'startx' doesn't launch 'X'

modprobe: Error: could not insert 'nvidia': unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmsg).
(ee)  fatal server error
(ee)  no screens found

The only change i made to the machine since installing Beowulf was adding printer driver for a Brother laser printer.  Reinstalling nvidia 340 driver doesn't resolve the issue.

any advice?

There shouldn't be a systemd-logind process at all, elogind should be handling the user session.

Do you have the elogind package? Sounds like your upgrade went wrong, you should probably describe exactly what you did.

elogind wasn't installed during upgrade.  I installed 'elogind' with apt-get and rebooted, afterwards x window launches smile

Thanks for the help!

#58 Re: Installation » X windows failed after Beowulf upgrade » 2020-06-22 22:15:28

I upgraded from Ascii by following the steps on Devuan website https://devuan.org/os/documentation/dev … to-beowulf.

During 'apt-get dist-upgrade', x window failed and exit to shell, there's message on screen complaining 'brother printer driver' issue, and system was stuck without response to keystroke.  I hard booted the system and rerun the installation steps.  with which it seems that all pkgs have been installed and system was up-to-date.   but x window refused to start as non-root user.

I had printer driver for my Brother HL-2270SW installed in Ascii, and removed it after Beowulf upgrade https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answer … 29---linux, afterwards x still failed.

hi, i upgraded to beowulf from ascii on my thinkpad.

after upgrade, I couldn't launch x windows as a user,  seems system complaining systemd-logind: failed to get session  and  'AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver
I use 'icewm' WM and Launch x as root starts X windows ok.

#60 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » no sound after beowulf upgrade » 2020-06-21 06:19:50

thanks, that solved it!

Pulseaudio
- If you have no sound, make sure the following line in
   /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf is commented as
   shown here:

   #autospawn=no

Pulseaudio is gone for beowulf?  there's still the pulseaudio volume control in App Menu, which i used for enable the sound in ascii.

I looked at volume settings again, it seems that pulseaudio is the default sound server, and i changed the sound output device (default set to build-in digital audio stereo HDMI), now i got sound in ff.

it's strange because i installed devuan last night and at first i don't remember seeing PA settings in volume control, i've installed Kodi afterwards, maybe Kodi pulled in PA as dependencies.  but FF definitely had no sound before installing kodi, if FF default to use PA?

and how do i use ALSA instead of PA in ascii?

#66 Re: Other Issues » installing python libraries with pip in devuan » 2019-08-09 20:24:36

thanks!

the command i used installs the latest pip (ver. 19.2.1), while the pip in ascii is ver. 9.0.1.  maybe that's what caused the installation error for other python packages.

how do i remove PIP i already installed?  i looked through 'synaptics' for installed packages but couldn't find it.

hi,

I installed python pip in debian wheezy before I upgraded my system to devuan stable.

these are the command I used:

wget https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py
python get-pip.py

however, when I tried to install additional python libraries after devuan upgrade, I received error:

pip install numpy keras matplotlib pandas

You either need to install elogind or edit Xwrapper.config to allow X to run as root. See the section on startiing X from console in the release notes:

thanks, i added line to Xwrapper.config and x windows works now.!

i have icewm WM installed and startx will start 'icewm', no display manager being used.

i upgraded to ascii from Debian Wheezy on this particular machine last night, in wheezy, it directly boot into 'icewm' once start the machine.  however, after upgrading to ascii, it failed to enter 'icewm' after init is done, instead displaying error message on the screen and bring me to user log in prompt, after loggin in as my username, i typed 'startx' and enter, it can launch into icewm but the screen would freeze every time.

The onscreen error message instructs me to look at '/home/erdos/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log for details so it's up-to-date log info.

i will look at my /etc/inittab file for any hints.

it seems the new 'xorg' has changed its behavior in ascii comparing with prior jessie xorg - since i know the same setup works under both Debian Wheezy and Devuan Jessie from experience.

hi, i upgraded Debian Wheezy installed on an Sony-vaio netbook to Devuan Jessie with success.

But after running further upgrade to ascii, i encounter issues:
the upgrade itself was a success, no errors.

but after i rebooted the machine, as soon as i started x, the screen freezes, with no response from mouse or keyboard.

here's the related error info in '~/.local/share/Xorg/Xorg.0.log'

(EE)parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (permission denied)
...
(EE) xf86CloseConsole: KDSETMODE failed: bad file descriptor
(EE) xf86CloseConsole: VT_GETMODE failed: bad file descriptor
(EE) Server terminatored with error (1). closing log file

not sure what to do next

I have had this issue on several installs, but with eth0.  This has been discussed here:

The fix seems to be to not have /etc/network/interfaces do anything, except for lo, the file contents should be:

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

This will get rid of the boot delay and allow you network manager (wicd, network-manager, whatever) to control the network connection.  If you do not use a network manager, then you probably just need to do an ifconfig wlan0 up prior to your other manual connection commands.

My problem with this was with ethernet, hopefully the resolution for your wireless is the same, as posted.

The MTA delay probably has to do with exim4 now being installed by default.  You may want a mail transport agent, I personally find it not needed on my system.  You can purge exim4 and all associates if you do not want the mail transport, this will get rid of that delay.

After I deleted lines in /etc/network/interfaces about 'wlan0', it seems delays caused by both network interface and MTA are gone.

thanks!
