I tried installing Devuan again, booting in UEFI mode and doing a full disk install.
The BIOS still did not find GRUB at boot.
I could boot to Devuan GRU only navigating tthrough the BIOS submenus.
I decied to try MxLnux (which I usually keep at hand in frugal mode) and installed it also full disk.
It worked perfectly and got the GRUB menu no problem.
So I repartitioned the HD and reistalled Devuan on a second partition.
I could probaly have make Devuan install work going through the UEFI folders renaming procedure, but this is okay for the time being.
Thanks for the help.
I'll follow your suggestions and post the outcome.
Thanks for taking the time to look at the datas.
Actually, half a day running Windows convinced me I have no use for it (I wanted to try some free piano VSTs but they suck).
So, I'm considering getting rid of Windows altogether and make the laptop Devuan only.
My partition table presently looks like this:
/dev/sda4: BLOCK_SIZE="512" UUID="E6144245144218C7"+ TYPE="ntfs" PARTUUID="055c56c6-aefe-4e7f-97ad-788bf916e38c"
/dev/sda2: PARTLABEL="Microsoft reserved partition" PARTUUID="19a810ce-4d1e-4d4c-8967-b699d45c3370"
/dev/sda5: LABEL="devuan" UUID="6c5b969d-293f-4c45-925b-e4723d86abc1" BLOCK_SIZE="4096" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="e427b8b8-d30e-472e-87a6-b6152d993643"
/dev/sda3: BLOCK_SIZE="512" UUID="16A69470A69451DB" TYPE="ntfs" PARTLABEL="Basic data partition" PARTUUID="69c81569-7560-4872-ab26-b171a4333d5f"
/dev/sda1: UUID="4A93-10CE" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTLABEL="EFI system partition" PARTUUID="19a018fe-c429-410c-8b06-0c9aef63bb7b"
/dev/sda6: LABEL="Files" UUID="c61d01bf-0d1c-43ac-bc29-d45b5756f8eb" BLOCK_SIZE="4096" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="3ad740c1-773c-4d15-bd5d-b04ecc7c5ba3"
The only two partitions I'd like to keep would be:
SDA 5 (where I installed Devuan
SDA 6 (my personal archives partition)
Can I erase all the other partitions, reboot in Legacy mode and use Devuan install ISO to re-install GRUB in the MDR?
I could also install a second Devuan in the free space (since I can use a testing distro) and install GRUB then.
Thanks for the link.
Yep, it could be HP.
I need to look into it with time and attention.
Right now, I had to reinstall the system in a rush and get it usable cause my old laptop gave up the ghost on me and I had to work.
I've never needed to boot UEFI before (and also never kept Windows on my machines) or owned an HP laptop, so this is all new to me.
I have temporarily solved the problem installing grub2win.
I had to point grub2win to the partition where Devuan was installed and also set the option to force grub2win to load (I don't remember the exact term) otherwise the system would still boot in windows.
Now I get Devuan on grub2win menu and it boots fine.
It-s not ideal (I'd rather have grub on linux) but seems to work just fine.
I wish there'd be a way to just make GRUB work from the HD. It seems strange that Linux couldn't be installed on a laptop just cause it has an SSD disk.
The error I get when I boot in legacy mode is that the is no bootable system.
I wonder if I could Install Devuan in Legacy mode and still boot Windows 10 with GRUB.
Hello,
I'm trying to install Devuan on a HP ZBook 15 G2 laptop with SSD HD.
If possible, I'd like to keep Windows 10 on a small partition.
I first tried to enable Legacy booting, but then the BIOS would refuse to boot Windows or find the USB pendrive.
So, I decided to stick with UEFI (I just disabled fast booting).
I went through the install as usual, but noticed that OS Prober failed to detect Windows.
I installed GRUB on the HD (SDA)
Upon reboot, the system just boot into Windows and does not seem to find GRUB.
On this Debian wiki:
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebia … G3/stretch
I found this warning:
2. Do not attempt to install bootloader on a buit-in NVMe SSD drive because grub install fails and the system will not be bootable. Instead, install Debian on another disk and use NVMe SSD as a data disk.
But in my case, the laptop has just the SSD drive.
Here is the output from blkid:

So, is there a way to install GRUB on the SSD HD and keep Windows working?
Thanks.

Hello,
DISCLAIMER: This is not a Devuan specific issue but, since there are so many knowledgeable people here, I'm hoping someone can help me shed some light on this problem.
Recently I have been experiencing a strange problem with Pidgin.
When I try to connect to Facebook (I use purple-facebook) I get the error message: Unknown HTTP error
There isn't any reference number and, if I launch Pidgin from the terminal, doesn't get any error output either.
This happens on Devuan Chimaera, Debian Testing, and I even tried a live Fedora 35 iso.
I also tried different facebook accounts with the same result.
However, this doesn't happen 100% of the time, and very occasionally it connects fine.
I have been using the same setup for a long time, and never had any problem.
The system is up to date, and I use the latest purple-facebook library.
If I use a browser, I can access my facebook account without any problem and haven't noticed any trouble with other connections.
Any suggestions as to how address this issue?
I would guess the shown cable is an analog input, not an output.
It is made for digitisinging (recording) analog TV signals consisting of composit-video and audio, e.g. from video-tape-recorders (VHS/BetaMax/video8/whtever) or old video-cameras with TV-out.
Makes sense to me.
What make and model of laptop do you have?
What make and model of TV would you like to connect it to?
Toshiba Satellite
Samsung Tantus Digital TV
You would probably have got a better response if you had started by saying what make and model of laptop you have and what make and model of TV you would like to connect it to. And putting the above link in your first post would have been more helpful (or just saying what make and model it is).
As it is no one could offer any specific help since they could only guess what you were trying to connect.
It seemed rather clear to me, then again perception is everything.
If they do work at all, it's possible that the cables only work for very specific use cases.
That's precisely what I asked.
Is there a good reason that you are considering doing this instead of using the simplest and most straightforward solution possible?
Curiosity.
Thanks for all the feedback.
Just to be clear, my doubt is not how can connect the laptop to the digital TV. As I said, it has the monitor port so I could use that.
The USB to RCA audio & video does exist and you can see a pic here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j7DbXk … share_link
The fact that I found such a cable is in fact what got me wondering if connecting this way was possible.
iThen I suggest you use it, that's exactly what it's for. Why bugger about with any of this when you already have the right electrical signal, the right video format, and the right connector already present?
I don't understand what gives you the right to patronize anyone, or assume I haven't already tried what you suggest.
A forum is to ask questions depending or what people need to know, right?
If you cannot answer--or don't like--the question asked why posting an "answer" at all?
Thanks for your reply.
in case it was not clear enough, what I meant is I would like to connect my laptop to a digital TV using the video and audio output from the laptop's USB port to the RCA video and audio entrey on the TV, and do so by mean of a connecting cable which has a USB plug on one side and 3 RCA video plugs on the other.
The laptop has a TV-out connection, I just wanted to know if I could use the USB port instead.
Since there are headphones that use USB ports and cameras, I assumed there might be a chance to connect a TV the same way.
Hello everybody,
My system is Devuan Chimaera with ALSA and mpv.
I'm trying to connect my laptop to a digital TV using a USB connector (to the laptop USB port) and RCA audio/video plugs on the TV input, so that I can see images and hear sound played on the laptop on the TV.
Is it possible? and if so, how do I go about configuring the system?
Thanks for your suggestions
Thanks.
The post indicated refers to older drivers than what Devuan is using now, which makes it simpler.
In case anyone else got the same problem, what worked for me was:
sudo apt-get install r8168-dkms
sudo rmmod r8169
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
sudo echo "blacklist r8169" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
Hi,
On my Devuan Chimaera box I keep getting the following dmesg error:
[ 887.331600] r8169 0000:01:00.0: can't disable ASPM; OS doesn't have ASPM control
[ 887.331731] r8169 0000:01:00.0: no MMIO resource found
It shows up over and over on tty.
I have checked for drivers and modules errors but haven't found anything.
Any suggestion as to what might cause it?
Thanks.
It seems odd that two separate browsers all of a sudden would present the same error (without having been upgraded). Of course, they are both based on Qtwebengine, so that might be a clue.
Yet, if both Qutebrowser and Falkon had problems displaying a page like Distrowatch, I'd think someone would have already noticed.
I'm, still inclined to think I messed something up somehow.
Hi,
thanks for the feedback.
I spoke to my my internet provider who made a reconfiguration of my modem.
Now I can access lists.alpinelinux.org, but I still get an error on distrowatch. (Bad Request
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.) on Qutebrowser and Falkon, but it works fine on Waterfox.

Snapshot works well on a regular system, but I noticed this -
I also enabled the option to save a copy of the file system.
& wondered if that overrode making a 'live' - I suggest to try just making a 'live' system.
(I've changed the working directory before, & that works, but I haven't tried writing it to a different disk/partition.)
I used refracta always from an installed system. AFAIK the file system copy option only preserve the first copy refracta makes in order to creates the squashfs file so to shorten the process if repeated.
Also, in the latest tries, I used refracta default options where the snapshot and work directories are in the /home folder in the same partition.
Hi,
today I got a strange issue on my Devuan Chimaera box which I had encountered and solved on Alpine a few weeks ago.
On qutebrowser and Falkon, when I go the the page https://lists.alpinelinux.org/ I get a '404 Not Found nginx' error.
I also get an error on https://distrowatch.com/ 'Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.'
On waterfox, distrowatch works fine but lists.alpinelinux.org doesn't.
On Dillo, both lists.alpinelinux.org and distrowatch.com work fine.
Now, on Alpine, I solved the problem by installing dhclient and creating the file /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf with the code:
option rfc3442-classless-static-routes code 121 = array of unsigned integer 8;
send host-name = gethostname();
request subnet-mask, broadcast-address, time-offset, routers,
domain-name, domain-name-servers, domain-search, host-name,
dhcp6.name-servers, dhcp6.domain-search, dhcp6.fqdn, dhcp6.sntp-servers,
netbios-name-servers, netbios-scope, interface-mtu,
rfc3442-classless-static-routes, ntp-servers;
prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4;
On Devuan dhclient is already there, so I tried to append the 'prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4;' line but to no effect.
Note that at the time, on Devuan the pages giving me errors worked fine. Except for an update/upgrade, I didn't change anything.
So, here what I have tried so far:
I tried on another Chimaera fresh install on my laptop = same error
I tried from Daedalus live cd with Firefox = same error
I tried from Slitaz frugal with tazweb = pages work fine
Here some more output:

Any suggestions as to what I could do?
I'm not seeing an obvious error there. Sorry. The only other idea I have right now is that somewhere between bios and grub and kernel there's confusion about the order of disks. And I'm not sure what to do to about that other than messing with the disk order in the bios.
Google says some other things to try are:
- use usb2 port instead of usb3 (or a usb2 hub if you don't have a usb2 port)
- try a different usb stick
- set bios to use AHCI instead of IDE (or RAID)
I don't think usb ports or the stick are the problem since I get the same error whether I boot from usb, boot the iso on the hd from grub or boot the system in frugal mode.
I agree it's baffling. I mess around with lots of live iso and remasters (slitaz, antix, slax, etc) and never came across this issue in a DDed image.
Repeated the process, same result. Here is the new log produced by refractasnapshot -d:

Yes, I used /dev/sdb.
I don't think the problem lies there since it happens even in the frugal mode where I simply copied the filesystem.squashfs to the folder.
I'll try again with the -d option to see if it sheds more light on what I am doing wrong.
@golinux .... LOL, I assumed that much. Thanks.
Forget daedalus,
computers are files and folders,
and folders have to be wrapped up as a file.
The latest wrapping is courtesy of Facebook.
The analogy is Chubb and Yale have been making locks forever and Facebook start making locks and it's got a monkey metal spring in it and it breaks and you're up shit creek without a paddle.
I don't understand what this has to do with the issue at hand.
I'm not even using daedalus, just mentioned that the grub stanza is tested to boot a live system without issues.
