Thankfully (sort of) it was a hardware issue. The drive wasn't slotting in correctly. I think I was panicked by the installer suggesting drivers, although in all fairness it did say hard drive not detected. I should have known better to first explore the hardware itself.
Thanks for your patience. Long time debian user and I've been meaning to migrate to devuan for some time. I chose KDE and it's looking very good.

I chose regular install.
The message said that I needed a driver for the hard drive. It gave me a long list of options and the option to select a driver from external media. I've used the kingspec a number of times for a number of distros. It currently has alpine os on it.
I'm going to try the install in a different laptop.
