but this comes up after some activity ALREADY reading the dvd followed by like 50 of the error messages ..or words to that effect.

If I try the net-install image, will that detect and use my wifi connection?

I actually had the same issue a few days ago when I tried to install Devuan 6 on a AMD Ryzen 5 desktop PC. I "solved" it by installing the latest Exe GNU/Linux (which is minimalist Devuan 6 spin with a TDE desktop).

I actually kept the TDE desktop on that PC as I quite like it after customizing the looks a bit to suit my taste, but if you go down the same route and prefer a different DE then you can just install it with apt or synaptic as usual.

I got those errors both with the devuan_excalibur_6.1.1_amd64_desktop.iso and the devuan_excalibur_6.1.1_amd64_netinstall.iso so the netinstall image will probably not work either for you.

You can try the (exprimental) netinstall iso at https://files.devuan.org/user/tempforever/, it has a different booting mechanism

THANKS, gonna see about it tomorrow. I have a fairly good older (daedalus) installed on that laptop as well as the desktop but the former has lost the wifi connectivity. That's why I thought maybe a newer install could be a good idea.

ADDENDUM

6.1.2 net installer did manage to connect but only to my phone's hotspot but the installation failed to get grub to write boot code to disk (gave some warnings about that so it was not a surprise). Did it from another system. Once booted slim said "F1 for options" but hitting F1 did nothing at all. Then it asked for a username and password, not sure if that means a user name or a used-id (UID), I use only user-id and enter no value during install when prompted for a user 'name' (it's a security fubar). Neither a null entry NOR a user-id entry worked to log in however.

Not to throw rocks at Devuan devs though, I tried Debian-13.7.0 as well and that dvd wouldn't even boot my T480!

.Hi I installed devuan 6 excaliber net iso using a ventoy USB. It detected WIFI during install where one laptop had an Intel Wifi card and the other an atheros card. On one of the installs I had to use "mem disk" mode on the ventoy usb to get it to work. I know some people have had issues with ventoy. There are other forum posts about that

But I didn't use Ventoy, the "Ventoy" error message must come from the Devuan ISO itself that apparently uses Ventoy components internally.

I use a Zalman ZM-VE300 external USB SSD drive which allows you to select an ISO file an then emulates an optical drive with it.
I have been using this for more than a decade for many dozens of Linux installs with many different ISOs of many distros (and even occasional Windows installs for friends who don't want Linux) and never had a problem booting of it before.

Even the Devuan netinstall ISO has actually worked with the Zalman USB drive before, I only got this "Ventoy" error message with one PC so far. But on that PC the Exe GNU/Linux ISO booted and installed fine from the Zalman, so it's not an incompatibility between the Zalman and that PC.
