+1000 to IgnorantGuru!!! I can't count how many times I have shared his "gnome-et-al-rotting-in-threes" since it was written. Those of us who were paying attention could see the steamroller coming . . .

#178 Re: Off-topic » GNOME is taking the scum bag approach still... » 2025-06-26 23:36:27

Good grief . . . that is one sick puppy! I'm sooo happy in my cave! big_smile

#179 Re: Other Issues » How to change Devuan Forum Username? » 2025-06-26 22:41:54

I don't know how you became an administrator here, it's amazing!

Perhaps you will learn, grasshopper . . . wink

#180 Re: Other Issues » How to change Devuan Forum Username? » 2025-06-26 19:29:48

Contemplating physical, verbal and/or mental actions before executing them usually avoids situations like this. wink  Your problem is YOUR doing! You are fun to play with!!

#182 Re: Installation » How to Install XLibre on Devuan Daedalus (MATE)? » 2025-06-24 00:48:25

Welcome to paradise erm Devuan! AFAIK, no one in this camp has experimented with XLibre. Perhaps you would like to lead the testing and adaptation of XLibre for Devuan?

#183 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » XLibre: The New Xorg Fork » 2025-06-23 20:06:44

Good find! Sounds like they want to stop the bleeding from (yet another) bone-headed decision! They sure are slow learners in that camp . . .

#184 Re: Off-topic » GNOME is taking the scum bag approach still... » 2025-06-21 00:53:52

@steve_v . . . Thanks for that excellent assessment. I do hope that SOMEONE will step up to provide an XLibre option for Devuan so that I can avoid Wayland for the remainder of my days. Sadly, the task is way above my pay grade . . .

#185 Re: Off-topic » Debian removed multi-init support from the latest shipped grub » 2025-06-19 23:37:40

Anecdote: Over a decade ago and before systemd made its formal entrance on Debian, I went several rounds with Michael Biebl (and others) on the debian-user mail list and nearly got banned. Shortly thereafter, I surrendered to the immovable reality and never posted there again . . .

#186 Re: Off-topic » Debian removed multi-init support from the latest shipped grub » 2025-06-19 18:55:50

@yurimodin . . . You are a little late to the party but at least you finally figured it out! big_smile systemd is a ball and chain of servitude and blind obedience . . .

Not to worry . . . There is a solution for some of that. It's not easy to "lose" a tiny sub-dermal chip containing all your important personal info!

Note that a voip connection is still working for me on an ancient set of Panasonic phones that a friend handed down to me over a decade ago. My "emergency" cell phone has the battery removed and I have no idea if it would still work to make a 911 emergency call which is why I bought it a very long time ago.

#189 Re: Freedom Hacks » How to change dependencies of a Debian package » 2025-06-08 16:14:29

Yeah . . . that last entry was an epic fail. The relentlessness of his/its posts is very borderline human behavior.

#190 Re: Freedom Hacks » How to change dependencies of a Debian package » 2025-06-08 15:49:27

A very personal opinion . . . A wiki is useless without a viable distro. We need boots on the ground to deal with the cluster**** that Debian keeps throwing at us not a fugly, head-tripping wiki. I took care of the first wiki attempt so have some experience. A wiki is close to outdated by the time it is finally written so pretty much a waste of resources. The wiki information is also based on information that is available elsewhere so seems like a duplication of effort for no real gain as it will be outdated before the ink dries. And AI has absolutely nothing to do with Devuan and would be totally OT on a Devuan wiki even though it is tolerated on the forum in moderation.

#191 Re: Off-topic » Hospitals and the irc#devuan » 2025-06-04 17:43:33

@chomwitt . . .

Hard to believe no one answered you question. And even harder to believe you aren't aware that Jenkins is our package builder!

You can find it here:
https://jenkins.devuan.dev/view/Devuan% … 0Builders/

And it is mentioned on this page of devuan.org:
https://www.devuan.org/os/development

Logs are available at:
#devuan-ci

Edit: Also info about our build system on this very forum amprolla magic.

#192 Re: Off-topic » Hospitals and the irc#devuan » 2025-05-28 19:03:53

@chomwitt . . . a "rant" is a verbose tirade (with which I believe you are quite familiar). wink

#193 Re: Off-topic » Hospitals and the irc#devuan » 2025-05-28 16:43:00

RANT!! This metaphor failed for me out of the gate because hospitals are a special kind of hell hole where sickness and healing are incredibly misunderstood. I will spare you the rant . . .

#194 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] .xsession-errors file » 2025-05-27 15:43:07

After I update or (rarely) reboot, first thing I do is take a quick look a xsession-errors then delete it.

#195 Re: Off-topic » libadwaita forked by Mint » 2025-05-27 03:02:17

@sagemage . . . Yes, I received emails from him regarding comments/fixes I had posted years ago when I put together the Devuan themes. Hopefully someone will step up to update those themes to work properly in the current environment. All the relevant info is HERE in our git.

#196 Re: Off-topic » libadwaita forked by Mint » 2025-05-26 22:12:40

@zapper . . . IIUC . . . that is surely not a given . . . Client Side Decorations locks in the look and feel of the desktop. A "nocsd" package has allowed us to do that for years. They are just tightening the noose . . .

#197 Re: Off-topic » libadwaita forked by Mint » 2025-05-26 15:35:09

Good find, greenjeans! That would certainly solve a lot of visual presentation lock-in issues that are coming down the pipeline. Would require someone to integrate it into Devuan though. Perhaps someone will step up to take it on . . .

#198 Re: Off-topic » So Microsoft has ruined GitHub by pushing AI sloppy nonsense features » 2025-05-25 21:56:09

That seems to be one of the best refuges available but since I am not an active git user these days, I have no personal experience. As to moving off our current git . . . low priority because it still works . . .

#199 Re: Off-topic » So Microsoft has ruined GitHub by pushing AI sloppy nonsense features » 2025-05-25 17:21:39

Early on, Devuan was on gitlab . . . then moved to gitea. There have been changes in gitea too but no serious talk about another move.

#200 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] Stale keyring files? » 2025-05-23 00:08:10

@greenjeans . . . Let's see where things go in the coming years. Currently things seem to be working through Excalibur and I will be on Chimaera until it is EOL. My personal trajectory . . . by the time I work my way through Daedalus and Excalibur I will be getting very close to 90! Strangely, I find comfort in that thought . . .

Also remember that Devuan has always been Debian without systemd. So a radical change to other applications like the DE would require a major shift in standing policy and that would require extensive discussion and feedback.
