No updates this weekend, but I did upload what's likely the only copy (other than on my iso's) of the old Oxy2-ZEN icon set. Black folder icons and a lot of grays. A whole lot of way-back-when icons from long ago for programs that are long gone, but they are of historical interest and could be re-cycled and modded for new uses. I have added some over the years and did some minor mods.

Hopefully somebody might get some use from them.

#677 Installation » Will Devuan work to convert an older iPad to Linux? » 2025-03-23 00:33:50

Okay, I know I have a lot of reading ahead of me, but was hoping to get a tip or two from anybody who has done this.

So down at the library today working on fixing it up, the city manager stops by and asks me if we can use some older iPads, the state is replacing the ones they have with new ones for various agencies like firefighters and such, so the old ones are going to be surplus, and our city can get 5 of them for the library for free.

My first thought is to convert them, and turn them basically into simple e-book readers for the most part, so the folks in our small town can check them out and read books on them if they don't have a tablet (most don't, they are older folks), and pre-load them with some royalty-free content but also maintain a database at the library of such content so they can access it and choose particular books that interest them.

I won't have them in hand for a while yet, but am trying to get ahead of it and see what's possible.

Bottom line: I have never in my life used apple products, never tried to convert one to linux, and don't know squat about it.

I can't imagine it's too bad, but the touch-screen support is the main thing i'm wondering about.

Any guidance would be appreciated and it's for a very good cause, we are trying to revive this old library and give folks a reason to read.

#678 Re: Installation » How to upgrade to devuan testing? » 2025-03-22 22:01:41

What rolfie said. Gotta install merge before you do anything, and after installing it I always re-boot just to be safe. Then I edit sources.list and start the process.

#679 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Devuan 5 Daedalus - Evolution CalDav integration » 2025-03-22 16:43:11

Not sure how to help here, can you give a little more detail? Which DE are you running?

In Openbox using tint2 for the panel, you can alter the command for what happens when you right-click it. I use mine to run tz-data.

In Mate that's not possible without a lot of re-coding I think.

You can always make a simple custom launcher and drop it in the panel to launch just about any app, but that won't integrate with the onboard calendar.

Cool! Will check it out, nice to see folks like you and fsmithred working to keep 32 bit alive. smile

Even better! I really don't like my scrollbars fading, or those awful skinny scrollbars either.

EDIT: fsmithred has an iso too that might be of interest or help to you, see this thread: https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=7011

For the text editor, I mainly use Mate Desktop's pluma,

My do-everything text editor of choice, notes, coding etc. It's pretty versatile without being overpowering with all the options.

In terminal nano, it's simple.

Updated/uploaded the ob-max-z with all updates listed in the last two posts. In addition, I also added a LOT more printer support,
printer-drivers-all and hplip, bluetooth print support, a gimp plugin for printing (plus one other package for gimp with some extra brushes and such). Goal with the max is to try and make everything work right-out-of-the-box if possible.

Updated ob-mini-z uploaded today, basically same improvements and updates as the mate-mini I uploaded yesterday. Also tweaked PcmanFM thumbnail/cache setting a bit to enable proper thumbnailing of all images, only exception is large HEIC's which seem to be problematic in every system i've tried so far to a certain extent. Working on the ob-max-z tonight and should have it uploaded as well by tonight or tomorrow.

#684 Re: Devuan Derivatives » Vuu-do Linux! *New Openbox-64 iso's (1.0.7) up 2-02-18*!! » 2025-03-16 18:24:15

Updated Vuu-do mate-mini-z uploaded.
Bunch of updates including a new kernel, have also added support for thumbnailing
and viewing HEIF/HEIC and AVIF images. And have added a couple of older Xorg packages
to support even older AMD/ATI video, had to rescue a 2009 windows machine that got
obliterated when it tried to update yet again.

So cool Devuan still keeps them in the repo, good job folks, this was for a very deserving
neighbor lady too, y'all are doing good work for the community. smile

#685 Re: Other Issues » [SOLVED] how restore a root partition to a dual boot system ? » 2025-03-15 15:59:24

If grub is not recognizing your other partitions when you run update-grub, check /etc/default/grub and /usr/share/grub/default/grub files and make sure the os-prober is not disabled, on a fresh install of Devuan os-prober is disabled by default. Change the disable line from true to false as below:

# If your computer has multiple operating systems installed, then you
# probably want to run os-prober. However, if your computer is a host
# for guest OSes installed via LVM or raw disk devices, running
# os-prober can cause damage to those guest OSes as it mounts
# filesystems to look for things.
GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

#686 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » (Partially solved) Lightdm not working right in Excalibur » 2025-03-14 01:40:57

Well dang, didn't think to add the Intel microcode and didn't check here until the snapshot was already started. Well it's easy enough to add stuff in live-session I guess. Hopefully Nvidia cards don't have the issue I had. Testing iso up now, when you get a chance check it out and let me know what needs to change or improve on the next run or if I should even do more runs.

#687 Devuan Derivatives » Devuan 6 (excalibur) mate testing iso uploaded » 2025-03-14 01:36:12

Well i'll probably catch **** for starting another thread down here, but this seems worth it.

This is NOT an official Devuan release, nor a Vuu-do release. This is a user snapshot
of Devuan 6 (excalibur), updated completely as of 3/13/2025 with the Mate desktop environment.
It's purpose is to provide a quick small iso for those interested in testing the
next version of Devuan.

Hopefully some folks might find it useful. It snapshotted and installed just fine and everything
seems to be working with just some tiny bugs here and there. Updates are still coming fast so
there might be some waiting already. Note this is not the Mate metapackage, just the core and
utilities plus a few selected packages for function and convenience.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/vuu-do … te-mini-6/

Passwords:
(user)devuan=devuan
root=root

This is a liveCD and includes the Refracta-installer for fast simple install.
This is not uefi-enabled. The os-prober has been enabled when you install grub, if you
need to disable it before install, while still in live-session, just edit
/etc/default/grub and /usr/share/grub/default/grub to disable the prober.

In most respects it is identical to current Devuan, I have not "vuu-do-fied" it,
it contains all original files, docs, translations, help files, original configs,
artwork etc. with the following exceptions:

This is a "mini", it contains no browser, office or multimedia programs whatsoever,
just the infrastructure for you to build on and configure as you see fit. There are no
release notes or manual as this is stock Devuan and ample documentation is available
on the site and forum. More info in the readme at the link.

I'll be updating this once every couple of weeks or so until Devuan 6 goes stable
hopefully early in the fall.

#688 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » (Partially solved) Lightdm not working right in Excalibur » 2025-03-13 16:46:45

Well I got it running, i'd say "fixed" but it's not really. After many other attempts I finally went in and installed firmware for my machine.
firmware-amd-graphics and amd-microcode and everything started working.

But with this iso I have tried to keep everything OEM Devuan as much as possible i.e. not adding extra firmware etc., and on the previous (daedalus) version I had some visual artifacts and funkiness, but it worked without the extra packages.

So now i'm wondering if people with Nvidia or Intel graphics might have the same issue? Again, this is early in the testing process and first freeze does not happen until Saturday according to what i've read.

There are some errors noted during the boot process too, there's a new alsa_restore error, but I had previously found why and it's fixable if I can find my notes on it, the usual wdat_wdt error which is also easy to get past by blacklisting it. But there is a 24 second delay during boot right after "waiting for dev to be populated" that I didn't have before.

So i'll mark this partially solved, and try to run an iso tonight and post later if anyone else would like to test.

#689 Documentation » Make QT5 and QT6 apps use your GTK theme » 2025-03-12 22:21:56

This is a drop-in solution, unlike some others that use a GUI and you have to manually adjust colors.

First install qt5-gtk2-platformtheme from the repo. For QT6 you will need to download and install the package qt6gtk2 that is appropriate for your platform, you can find them here:
https://software.opensuse.org//download … ge=qt6gtk2

Next, create (or modify) .xsessionrc in your users home folder, and add these lines:
export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gtk2 then save and close.

That's it. You may need to logout or reboot for changes to take effect.

#691 Re: Documentation » Enabling HEIC/HEIF and AVIF image support in Devuan » 2025-03-12 17:43:57

To enable support for WebP I have found that installing webp-pixbuf-loader works to visualize images, although not thumbnails.

Hmm, i'm getting proper viewing and thumbnailing of webp images in Mate/Caja and OB/PcmanFM here, but it's been a while since I added that support so I can't remember if the webp-pixbuf-loader was all I had to add.

#692 Documentation » Enabling HEIC/HEIF and AVIF image support in Devuan » 2025-03-12 17:13:14

greenjeans
Replies: 2

The HEIF/HEIC image format and the AVIF format have basic support in Devuan
in the form of libheif which is onboard in all versions. But to enable full support it
takes a little more than that, here's how to enable viewing and thumbnailing:

Install two packages, heif-gdk-pixbuf and heif-thumbnailer, for Mate
that's all you need to do and thumbnails will work in Caja and you can view them with
the Eye-of-Mate image viewer or Gpicview which is what I use. The Mate right-click image
re-sizer works for quick re-sizing.

If you need to convert the image to a .jpg or .png, you can open the image in GIMP and
export, or in terminal you can use Imagemagick to do so:
convert random.heic random.jpg

This also works in PcmanFM for the most part, but PcmanFM has a bug related to
thumbnailing and caching of thumbnailed images of any type in the gtk2 version in the repo,
quick testing of the gtk3 version in testing (excalibur) has the same bug, I reported
it a couple days ago.

Have not tested with other DE's/file-managers.

Okay so I looked and I did have the basic sysvinit package (transitional) installed alongside the other two, uninstalled it and no change sadly.

Looking for differences here, so am posting the lightdm.log from a working daedalus system, you can see the differences up near the top starting after "monitoring logind for seats", in the daedalus install it finds one and adds it, in the excalibur log it's failing to find a seat.

No syslinux dummy package, just syslinux and syslinux-common, no dummy syslinux package listed in the repo. Just have what I had before the upgrade.

To be clear i'm talking about the installed system, not a live-iso, haven't tried to snapshot one yet due to this issue.

Have tried multiple recommended fixes from searches i've done but no luck yet. Hope to get this figured out, it's so far the only real bug in this mini-system, everything else seems to be working really well.

So yeah, I know the fact that it's still testing is likely to be the issue and may not be quite fixable, but taking a shot here. It's only a few days before the first soft freeze now, so testing season is almost upon us and I wanted to whip up a test iso to get ahead of it.

Procedure for reference:

Clean install of the Devuan-mate-mini I did not long ago, just vanilla Devuan with Mate desktop.

Updates, a dozen or so, new kernel, install, reboot.

Install usrmerge. Reboot.

Change sources.list to Excalibur, open Synaptic and reload, mark all upgrades, apply.

Check lightdm.conf to make sure it's set to autologin user. When done, reboot.

Upon reboot into the new kernel/system, instead of desktop, it throws me into console tty1, username/password and startx gets me into desktop no problem. But rebooting or just trying to logout user, throws me back into console, no lightdm graphical interface at all.

Watching boot sequence, it clearly says "starting lightdm" every time. Once i'm in after using startx, services --status-all shows that lightdm is indeed there and enabled and running.

Any ideas where to start trying to troubleshoot this one?

ETA: Other than that, everything seems to be working fine, even seems a little snappier to me, kinda mind-blowing because it replaced literally every package in the old system.

#697 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] apt install: So where did it go? » 2025-03-07 23:23:38

I added the heif-gdk-pixbuf and the thumbnailer packages (in Mate) and now Caja shows thumbnails properly, and I can view the image in Gpicview but not in the Eye-of-Mate image viewer.

I take that back, after a reboot the Eye-of-Mate image viewer is now displaying them as well.

No joy though for thumbnails in PCmanFM....got the packages installed and the pixbuf package specifically says in it's description "for programs like gpicview and PcmanFM". Gpicview no problem though, so that's good.

Finding some people online that claim it works for them though, and others like me it doesn't, looks like another puzzle to solve.

#698 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] apt install: So where did it go? » 2025-03-07 19:18:25

File-managers pretty much all have a way to add custom right-click extensions, usually using a .desktop connected to a command or script.
The below script works to re-size but also to convert to .jpg when you right-click an image. If you just want conversion and no re-sizing, just enter the dimensions of the original in the box. If you'd rather have things converted to .png just alter the script. Just tested this on an .heif file and worked fine.

#!/bin/sh

sizebox=$(yad --fixed --window-icon=image --form --title="Resize Image" --field="Resize to:" --width=400 --text-align=center --text="Enter new size (W x H in pixels, i.e. 800x600, 1024x768 etc.)")

size=$(echo $sizebox | awk 'BEGIN {FS="|" } { print $1 }')

convert "$1" -resize "$size" -set filename:copy '%t-%wx%h' '%[filename:copy].jpg'

#699 Re: Hardware & System Configuration » [SOLVED] apt install: So where did it go? » 2025-03-07 18:56:21

Can confirm both methods above work, GIMP export or Imagemagick in terminal.

Imagemagick doesn't list it as a supported file-type, but it works in terminal and file-manager right-click re-sizes that use the imagemagick backend also work perfectly for re-sizing.

I added the heif-gdk-pixbuf and the thumbnailer packages (in Mate) and now Caja shows thumbnails properly, and I can view the image in Gpicview but not in the Eye-of-Mate image viewer.
