In that case getting Network Manager working is probably a better idea, its usually just click and connect, disconnect.
If you have the file /etc/network/interfaces make sure to comment out any networks in relation to your wifi or ethernet as i believe Network Manager handles this in its own way.
Ive used NetworkManager in the past and it does the job.
Try installing it like this.
sudo apt install network-manager network-manager-gnome
reboot
get this from terminal:

HI Dice
Nice to talk to you again :-)
Thanks for the info - will try your method , but unfortunately I am not the only one using the laptop, so it needs to be ''uber friendly''.

HI,
So.. I was having various problems with my Devuan install, and in the end, yesterday decided to do a clean install using the desktop iso.
I have a broadcom b4322, so I needed to install b43 fwcutter and b43 firmware installer.
Ok - did that.
Opened WIcd, added wlan0 as the wifi interface
Sat patiently, and then ssid's appeared. - yay!!
Problem is the whole thing is so flakey?
I can be connected to wifi, but when I open the manager it says ''no networks found''
If I refresh, sometimes things appears, sometimes nothing.
Then sometimes later on,I will open the manager and it will show the ssid's?
This can be a pain if I need to change to a different wifi at home, because - even though I am connected to a network, the manager says no networks found, and I cannot switch.
Could I remove wicd ( using Synaptic), and then install network manager instead and try that, or does wicd always have to be installed?
Can someone enlighten me? - or maybe share their ''reliable methods''
Many Thanks
pootler
THanks everyone for al your suggestions!
Sometimes its easier to start from scratch- so I decided to do a fresh install.
I will probably be posting new problems soon :-)
pootler
Thanks all
yup - will try and remove non devuan stuff.
Will report back in a few days - laptop occupied for the next three days running particularly long data recovery for an external HDD:-)

Thanks Dice
Appreciate your patience and help.
Will investigate further myself.
Having done a lot of troubleshooting for other windows and mac systems, I do understand the difiiculty in communication with 'noobs'
Keep safe.

p.s as mentioned, I still have name, Speaker volume, Power, and time in tray.

O.K.
I am starting to show my lack of linux knowledge.
output of your command gives me an 18mb text file.
It wont open in mousepad ( ''wrong conversion''? )
it wont open in featherpad ( permission error )
it will open in VIM, BUT this is nearly a thousand pages of text!, not the sort of thing a forum would appreciate!

HI,
No wifi icon in the top bar :-(
your command doesn't give anything?
''sudo: /home/keith/.xsession-errors: command not found''
Probably me.

HI,
Thanks for the replies, and the welcome.
I come from a predominantly Windows/Mac background, but wanted to escape about a year ago.
The accessibilty of Linux OS has improved tremendously recently, So I tried a few others ( Mint, Manjarao) until I setled on Duvean.
I dont know enough to choose ''custom install'', so I would have chosen defaults - so I am guessing Xcfe?
Because of the large application store, there is little I am lost for, and although I am pretty rubbish at at terminal, I can get by if required :-)
TBH, I can't quite remember the exact details of install, but it was using an image from the duvean site, and via USB drive - sorry.
I update the build every week, and have had very little problems
Losing this wifi icon is strange- also If I open an app that usually shows in the top bar, it wont show up as usual - I use ''flameshot'' screenshot, but now when I choose it from the applications menu, it will not show in the top bar, so I cannot access the details.
The only items still showing in the top bar are, name, speaker, power, and time.
is there a terminal command/s that will provide the info you are looking for?
Thanks again

HI,
I am relatively new to linux, but am enjoying devuan.
Recently , I turned on my laptop to discover my top right wifi icon has disappeared?
I am still connected to wifi, but have no indication anymore of networks or connections via the wifi icon.
Anyone enlighten me :-)
THanks
pootler
HI,
I am a long time windows/mac user, and have been happily using duvean for the last year.
I could be convinced to almost make a permanent change except for one thing that bugs me:-)
Why is the copying SOO slow when I need to transfer files to , say , a usb stick?
We are talking maybe 50 times slower!
I found the same slowness in speeds on previous distros I had tried ( Mint. Manjero)
Is this specific to Linux? - the transfer starts fast and then LITERALLY crawls to an -almost -full stop :=)
If I stop the copy, that seems to happen quickly, but if I then try to eject the stick, it can stay on ''writing data to device'' for 5 minutes or more?
i am sure there are vastly more experienced people here who can help me out with my noobness.
Many thanks

HI - new to the forums.
Really enjoying Beowulf.
I come from a windows /Mac background, but learning fast.
At first installing Brave web Browser was fine, and the browsing experience was great.
But- I am now finding with every update of brave, the functionality of brave is getting worse! - it crashes reguarly, hangs on youtube videos, will simply not open some things.
I have taken to avoiding any Brave updates, and even have to downgrade the package to a build 7 or 8 builds earlier tto get any decent experience?
Anybody else having this problem?
Many Thanks
