#1 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment » 2026-01-21 20:42:03

So now that I have it, how do I apply it instead of xcfe? I tried x session manager but I don't see it there. The download of enlightenment seemed successful. is there a step i am missing?

#2 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » Enlightenment » 2026-01-21 20:23:12

Gee, all the instructions I was finding were way more complicated. I've never done a desktop separate before. I didn't realize it could be so simple. These instructions should be the first thing on Enlightenments web page! I think developers get so caught up in the process that they forget someone new to this may not be aware of what is the most basic first step. I find i have that problem often when i try to get instructions I miss some fundamental that everybody knows but nobody talks about.

YES PLEASE! KDE Plasma is making my hair fall out. My son had installed enlightenment on chimera for me on my laptop and it worked seamlessly. Sadly, that laptop got taken out by lightning and I am starting over. Even more sadly my son is currently not here to install it for me so wish me luck! Was hoping to see if someone else here was using it successfully on excalibur?

Cool thanks! Once I get the hang of it I just might rope in my photography students and scoop some graphic design and art students ( I teach jewelry/metalsmithing and photography with basic photoshop) into a project/contest/extra credit?hmmm. I'm always trying to introduce students to open source tech. I'll post in DYI when I get a little more organized. Wheels are spinning fun fun!

#5 Re: News & Announcements » How you can help Devuan » 2026-01-20 00:46:24

I don't know if this fits in with anything you really need because the desktop environments are their own animal but I would be willing to donate/develop some good wallpapers that don't burn the eyeballs like the pink stuff on kde plasma. My skills lie in photography and art, not coding so it is the only way I could be helpful. I think that a 'devuan' wallpaper pack featuring quality photography and fun design that is ergonomic for the eyeballs (is that a thing?) would be really fun to put together. I also illustrate and draw comics. I always make my own wallpapers from my art. I don't know what is involved in the backend of wallpaper so I don't know how worthwhile this would be on your end but I think it might be appealing as a little perk for the newbies coming from slicker packaging OS. I really appreciate what you do here and your installer is so awesome for those less experienced. Anyway, just a thought and an offer in case it helps. ps, I'm also used to designing for other people and bringing their ideas to life so I'm pretty open to input and easy to work with.

#6 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-19 22:45:08

I finally have a working computer, thanks all above! Got into the command line from the installation boot and was able to shred the windows read only files that had mindmelded themselves to my hard drive and were gumming up the process. As for uefi, if you have a dell of a certain group (Precision t5600 in my case) you MUST install in UEFI mode not legacy or it Will Not Boot. See link from Altoid above.

#7 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 11:09:59

Ive been trying to nuke the computer for some time now but I had no access to a terminal and grub was not responding to commands. None of the instructions I could find could tell me how to do this nuking without a terminal. The wipe command I was able to do earlier seems to have cleaned up enough crud to let me install. Now I can boot with the usb inserted (even though It says to take it out) so I can finally access the terminal. It has bios uefi and legacy. I will read up on that link. Thank you.

#8 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 10:42:27

I was able to wipe my disk in the menu you got me into with the shell prompt. I was then able to install so thank you. It now says no bootable devices but i figure it out.

#9 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 08:41:28

The installer says that #2 primary 33.3 MB f ext4 / is the problem file.

#10 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 07:33:34

Well that would make sense. I suspect I installed read only files with my corrupted usb. These are my results.

/var/log/syslog:
/bin/sh: /var/log/syslog: Permission denied

fdisk /dev/sda:
This disk is currently in use - repartitioning is probably a bad idea.
It's recomended to unmount all file systems, and swapoff all swap partitions on this disk.
The device contains 'iso9660' signature and it will be removed by a write command. See fdisk(8) man page and --wipe partition for more details.

Couldn't figure out how to post a picture. Error says.

#12 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 02:37:23

I will post the exact error message as soon as it finishes erasing data on one of my partitions. 42% (I've been fearlessly trying stuff) This computer has been a bit of a nightmare throwing out errors that nobody who knows stuff seems to understand much less me. I had made an installation usb with a laptop that I realized afterward had broken ports that were making corrupted usb files and I haven't been able to install an os since. The fact that I've gotten this far with the installer is already a mini miracle.

#13 Re: Installation » [SOLVED] Partitions » 2026-01-18 01:56:38

Now I'm more confused, what do you mean by automated installer? I am using the desktop installer on a usb. It worked perfectly on my son's desktop but mine is having problems. Granted mine was messed up to begin with.

Hi, can someone point me in the direction of where i can find concise , understandable requirements for setting partitions? I have a dell precision T5600 with a broken windows os and a defective debian install, nothing bootable. I have gotten to the partition portion of the install and I keep getting messages that writing to my partition has failed. Originally i did not have a designated root mount. I have fixed that. I'm sure there is something I am missing in how my partitions are set. I have tried to look this information up but what I am finding doesn't seem to relate precisely to the partition menu in the devuan installer. What should my partitions look like? How big? What color underwear! Ghaaah!

#15 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur » 2026-01-17 06:45:59

Vivaldi does update. I have been using it across windows, linux, mac and android for a few years. It's been pretty seemless for me and the android app was the deciding factor. They may not be fully open source, only 70% so but they are one of very few browsers that can go on all four platforms and allow custom default search which is the feature I set the bar with. Being that I am only semi linux literate it wouldn't really matter to me if all the code were open cause I wouldn't understand it anyway. Brave are much shadyer in my opinion (did a deep dive on them once) but I can understand developers not liking vivaldi. They do, however serve a purpose and their compatibility and customization without any coding skills is handy for someone like me.

#17 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur » 2026-01-01 05:13:33

I used the instructions above to install it with apt install and the full path and it is working great. I was missing the full path for the install. Is it possible that the wrong vivaldi file is downloaded? What are the computer specs and which devuan excalibur download, example live usb or fully installed, which desktop are you using? If you can't uninstall there should still be some way to delete the file from your system. The more information you can detail about the setup. the better someone here can help you. Vivaldi does occasionally freeze on my son's windows laptop when we use it to watch tv and it takes xing out sometimes a couple of times or occasionally a restart to get vivaldi to behave so there is the possibility that there is a vivaldi glitch even though it usually works smoothly. (or the windows 10 on my son's laptop is having seizures,we don't really know...)

Thank you Green Jeans, that explains what I was missing. I always seem to miss the simple things...
I never realized there was a difference where you opened the terminal or that that was even really a thing...DOS was so much simpler (:

#19 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur » 2025-12-29 16:48:26

I think I see what I missed.

Installing Vivaldi via the terminal
After downloading a suitable package for your distro, you can use the following commands (from the directory where you saved Vivaldi) to install one of our Linux packages directly from the terminal [where ‘vivaldi*‘ equals the name of the Vivaldi install package].

Ubuntu/Debian based distros:
sudo apt-get -y install ./vivaldi*.deb

This part:(from the directory where you saved Vivaldi)
Unfortunately I'm not sure what they mean by this.

#20 Re: Desktop and Multimedia » [SOLVED] having issues installing vivaldi browser in excalibur » 2025-12-29 16:37:59

I am using the deb file. i downloaded it and attempted an install with these variations that were suggested in help instructions I could find

sudo apt-get -y install ./vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get -y install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt install vivaldi-stable_7.7.3851.66-1_amd64.deb

Am I missing a step or using the wrong command? Is there something additional I need to do with the vivaldi file I downloaded?

I just installed excalibur on a lenovo yoga and downloaded vivaldi file for install. I may be doing something (or everything) wrong but I have tried ALL the related info I can find with no success. Message is invariable that it is unable to locate package. I've checked my typing, tried a new download and a bunch of other things I'm not sure I remember at this point. I'm not a super terminal user and my "linux english" is sketchy but I've waded my way so far from DOS (yeah, before windows) red hat (not that I remember much} through windows hell and my Mac that I have had to assimilate for work so i'm not exactly a newbie. If somebody here has the patience to help me figure this out I'd appreciate it.

First, can Vivaldi be run on excalibur? I installed it myself on debian and my son installed it on my last laptop when he upgraded me to. devuan chimera.

If so, what are my install options?

What could be some reasons that the file can't be found?

Please and thank you!

PS Having same issue with installing Basilisk. Unable to locate package. I'm assuming at this point I'm missing a step.
