#1 Re: Installation » cannot inform kernel of changes » 2023-09-07 04:04:31

I had the same issue on a Lenovo N22 that was formerly a chromebook.
Rebooting at that point and using the new partions was also what I did to continue, although it gave the error again, I ignored it the second time round as there weren't any changes.

Looks to be an installer bug.

maldet (Linux Malware Detect) and this will use also clamav together.

Thanks Tom, this helps with options.

So Wine can get infected, and CryptoLocker's are still a threat.

I deal a lot with vintage computers, so often have to use dubious sources when looking for drivers and old software, so virus scanning of all these is a must.
An infected executable is always a potential threat,..

#3 Re: Other Issues » Virus scanning on Devuan » 2023-08-11 05:04:02

And if you run wine?

I have now scanned my home dir and uncovered a few infected applications hiding in wine.

Definitely worth using on Linux, as it is not as safe as it once was.

#4 Re: Other Issues » Virus scanning on Devuan » 2023-08-09 11:02:51

Thanks for the tips.

I do have files for Windows passing through so I have brought my system up to date and trying out the on access part - it is in clamav-daemon, a package I hadn't previously installed.

There isn't a startup script for the clamonacc component yet, and there seem to be some issues making one work at present, so I'll need to experiment with that.

I have been successfully using Comodo for Linux for a few years, but it recently stopped receiving updates and looks to have been finally abandoned, along with all the other linux AV products that once existed.

With no other still supported options I can find, I was reverting to clamav, but wanted to use it's recent real time option with clamonacc.

This opens a whole new challenge, as it requires a kernel with fanotify support, and that looks to first appear in the most recent Debian 12 - bookworm, so Devuan looks like it will have a way to go before that will be an option, unless I head down the custom kernel route, which is not an option I'm keen on.

What do other Devuan users use for virus and malware detection?

#6 Re: ARM Builds » [SOLVED] beowulf Pi 3B onboard wifi issues » 2021-09-16 02:37:58

The issue would seem to be resolved after running for more than a week without failing.

So the firmware I have used looks to be good on a RPi3B smile

#7 Re: ARM Builds » [SOLVED] beowulf Pi 3B onboard wifi issues » 2021-09-08 10:15:03

Thanks for all the feedback.

The issue is firmware, rather than an actual arm specific driver, which is under the non-free packages.

Duck diving found plenty of reports of issues for the firmware including the "Firmware has halted or crashed" over several years, and I concluded that picking a stable one was going to be hit or miss.

re: [    6.113164] brcmfmac mmc1:0001:1: Direct firmware load for brcm/brcmfmac43430-sdio.raspberrypi,3-model-b.txt failed with error -2]

I think this error means the file is not present, and the error has gone since I added one.

After trying several firmware versions with limited or no success, I am currently testing this one:

from firmware-brcm80211_20210818-1_all.deb
(http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/no … -1_all.deb)

these extracted files were added or replaced in /lib/firmware/brcm/

brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,3-model-b.txt
brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin
brcmfmac43430-sdio.clm_blob

which contains this version:  Firmware: BCM43430/1 wl0: Mar 30 2021 01:12:21 version 7.45.98.118 (7d96287 CY) FWID 01-32059766

I'll now have to wait and see how long it runs. It typically stopped in less than a week.

Hello Everyone,

I am using beowulf on Pi 3B as the host for a  Home Automation platform.
It has been stable, apart from the wifi.

Wifi is configured as just an access point for the automation networking to Sonoff and other wifi devices, and with ethernet for the lan side.
It all runs fine for a few days, and then the wifi firmware crashes, disabling the wifi.

wifi power management has been disabled, but that didn't resolve the crashes.

boot up looks ok.

Binary firmware for Broadcom/Cypress 802.11 wireless cards

I tried adding a pi 3b specific nvram file and different firmware files, but was unable to get a working combination.

Has anyone else seen and fixed this issue or managed to update wifi firmware for the Pi 3 B?

There are multiple recent reports of the wifi firmware crash issue on this and other pi models.

I'm having issues installing evolution email package on beowulf.

The install fails in evolution-common with:

Unpacking evolution-common (3.30.5-1.1) ...
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/evolution-common_3.30.5-1.1_all.deb (--unpack):
unable to open '/usr/share/help/ru/evolution/import-single-files.page.dpkg-new': Operation not permitted

some of the paths referenced did not exist, and creating them progressed things further, but only until the next error

Unpacking evolution-common (3.30.5-1.1) ...
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/evolution-common_3.30.5-1.1_all.deb (--unpack):
unable to open '/usr/share/help/el/evolution/tasks-usage.page.dpkg-new': Operation not permitted

If it is run again, the failing file and sometimes path changes.
They all seem to be related to help.

I have eventually managed to remove the mess left after each attempt.

Can anyone suggest a solution?

I'm looking at an alternative, as my thunderbird frequently just dies when fetching mail.

I checked it out, but I only have a bunch of rpi3.
Happy to test them if you can add support for them.

Currently test running a rpi3 beowulf image I found after much searching, along with Home Assistant.

#11 Installation » Option to install graphics card firmware during install » 2020-06-21 03:19:18

Would it be possible to offer an option for graphics adapter firmware installation during the install?

That way it would start immediately into the gui, instead of dropping to shell and leaving you with a problem.

I did this the hard way, once I knew what was required, before the end of install reboot, and it worked out a lot better than the first install attempt.

My graphics adapter is a Radeon HD 7700/7800 Series and needed the firmware-amd-graphics package.
